The public schools, churches, water system, street improvement, electric lights, Chamber of Com- merce, in fact every movement of importance to the welfare of the com- munity had his wise counsel and active support. With all of our admiration of Dr, Frear as an eminent scientist, we admired another side of the man still more, his splendid Christian char- acter and fine human qualities that left an indelible impression upon the lives of all those who knew him, and upon the thousands of people who counted him as their friend. His home life was indeed beautiful. He was most devoted to his family, provided for them an extensive library of the best literature, participated daily with the family in musical selections, and enjoyed games with the children. As a counselor, whether on scientific, public or personal matters, few men were his equal. He had the rare ability to analyze a problem, to see all sides of the question and to lead the thoughts of the inquirer into channels that would help him to form proper conclusions. He possessed to a remarkable degree the admirable qualities of kindness, cheerfulness, patience, charity and thoughtfulness. No one ever was associated with him in any capacity who was not helped in some way. A prominent scientist, who was his laboratory assistant twenty-five years ago, writes: He gave me every advantage, offered me the use of his large private library and helped me in hundreds of other ways. By dropping a friendly hint here and a caution there, he exercised a greater influence upon me than those who followed a more forcible decisive policy. I-Te was a true neighbor in every sense of the word, and beloved by all. XfVhen any of his friends in the community were ill, Dr. Frear almost invariably showed his interest and sympathy by making frequent calls at the home to inquire about their condition. He rarely criticised any- one and seldom failed to call attention to the good points of those who were criticised in this presence. In addition to Dr. Frear's large program of research work and his services in an omcial capacity for the state and national governments, for many years he taught Agricultural Chemistry and various other lines of agriculture. It was a great privilege to be a member of his classes. I-Ie was unusually careful in the presentation of material and most skill- ful in helping his students to analyze and grasp the problems involved. Dr. Frear was a frequent speaker before scientific organizations, conferences of state and national officials, and farmers' meetings. He possessed such a vast fund of information on the fundamental sciences underlying successful agricultural practice and was so accustomed to the use of scientific terms, that it was not easy for him to address farm audiences in language which could be understood. However, no class of people in Pennsylvania were more appreciative of his learned ad- dresses than werethe farmers of the state, and much of the progress made along agricultural lines has been due to his services. In the framing of laws relating to foods, fertilizers. lime and other subjects of importance to agriculture, he was unquestionably the leading authority in the state. No other scientist or oiiicial possessed such a wide range of information so essential in legislation of this character, and his counsel was nearly always sought before the bills were submitted to the Legislature. About a week before his death, he completed a comprehensive digest of the agricultural laws of Pennsylvania, which will be published in book form with other papers relating to the rural life of the state. The writer of this Memorial was privileged to know him as a teach- er, investigator, administrator, author, and lecturer, and in all of these respects Dr. Frear rendered tremendous service to The Pennsylvania State College and to the State and Nation, and was held in the highest esteem. ' But, let us now consider him as a man, as a friend, as a neighbor, as a fellow-townsman.
