Qu ..,, ,.,...,., 4 h,....,,.., - .,.,. g, M.... William Frear, Ph. D. i- -'--i ILLIAM FREAR, the son of Rev. George Frear and Mal- Ei E Ei vina Rowland Frear, was born in Reading, Penns lvania, 5 March 24, 1860, and died at his home in State College, Janu- EEE ary 7, 1922. The Frear family is of French 1?1uguenot descent. .l he first member who came to this country was Hugo Frear, who settled in New Paltz, New York, in 1677. VVilliam Frear attended the public schools of Reading and Norristown, where his father was a,Baptist minister, and later moved to Lewisburg, Pennsyl- vania, and entered Bucknell University. lt was his purpose while in college to become a civil engineer, but he became so much interested in chemistry and natural science that, after graduation, he accepted a posi- tion as Assistant in Natural Science at Bucknell University. He received the degree of Bachelor of Arts from Bucknell Univer- sity in 1881. He pursued postgraduate work at .Harvard University and the Illinois NYesleyan University, and he received the degree of Doctor of Philosophy from the latter institution in 1883. High scholarship characterized all of his public school and university work. After completing his graduate work, Dr. Frear was appointed Assist- ant Chemist of the United States Department of Agriculture and served in this capacity, conducting investigations with beet sugar and cereals. until 1885, when he was appointed Assistant Professor of Agricultural Chemistry at The Pennsylvania State College. A year later he was promoted to the rank of Professor, and he served as Professor of Fx- perimental Agricultural Chemistry and head of this department from 1908 until the time of his death. He was also Vice-Director of the Agri- cultural Experiment Station from 1887, two years after its organization, until the time of his death. There are no means of determining the value and importance of his work in connection with various state and government agencies. Officials everywhere placed great reliance upon his knowledge of scien- tific matters and the -results of his investigations in field and laboratory. For these reasons his services were in constant demand in organizations not connected with the college. For example, he was Chemist of the State Board of Agriculture from 1888 until the Board was abolished in ,i ': . 'f 1J.' jZI'i'X7 'jnf'i,':'f3gi51'girg, vigrx'-ir-ff-5, ef, -wr-Tv ,fvyryqfjzv'sT ? ' He was an honored member of scientific societies such as the Ameri- can Chemical Society, The Academy of Political and Social Science, and the Wzisliiiigtoii Academy of Sciencesg and a highly esteemed member of the fraternities, Phi Kappa Phi, Alpha Zeta, Phi Kappa Psi, and Alpha Chi Sigma. He was also a member of the Cosmos Club of llfashington, and of the Bellefonte Lodge No. 268, Free and Accepted Masons, of which he was Master in 1907, and Post Commander of Constans Com- mandery of Knights Templar. Dr. Frear was an authority of national reputation on a diversity of subjects. In the latter part of his life he probably was most interested in pure foods and food definitions and standards, but he was just as well known for his knowledge of soils, fertilizers, lime, feeds, tobacco culture, and meteorology. He was best known nationally through his service as a member of the Committee on Food Definitions and Standards which brought him into direct contact with the large food manufacturers of the country. The scope of his studies and investigations isiwell indicated by the great number and diversity of questions which he discussed before scien- tific societies and which were considered in numerous papers published by scientific journals, the Agricultural Experiment Station, the State Department of Agriculture, and by the United ,States Department of Agriculture. He was the author, or joint-author, of one hundred bulle- tins and special manuscripts published by the Experiment Station, em- bracing meteorological topics, lime and limestones, tobacco culture and 'vb 'rw cf rf-si, ei X '73, ip 'll Q A ly 'li ,,'i,,N,,flir .Ani ll 4 jlpji ji iNt7il'v,-,All -f ii ' Weegifi , ffiiieif'-F'ft'T1fiii'i54QCf'l' 1 films stag, '- ,ru-if-f fa fig' 1 rear, 1--wi--3: 5 -fi' ,.ig.gf.vfs'1 tl lj' if fu: -:,:iyrf.: ' ll gn,-.,i?i,, 1 i1i?gQ,.x,Xy i 1 4 222.i.'s.....f-,Em2uvoak, . -t.u.2:iE1aE.: H qliuiiiffe.-tn:l,. ami.. sb Q, 16
