BRIEF HISTORY , t l . .1 . . 3' - . .. 1 The Old Chemical Lecture Room where the Alumni I he Alumnl 1thOL1dUUn Ti Ah Association was First Organized in 1870. It formed July 28. 1870, in what was is now the AlumniHeadquarters. then called the Chemical Lecture Room, now Room 114, Main Building, and present Ahnnni l-lezulquarters. During the tirst period of Penn State History or until 1870, little is recorded of Alumni activity, but after that, marking the second period, and until the reorganization in 1910. the foundations for the present Alumni program were laid. Alumni representation on the Board of Trustees was granted in 1876. In 1881 changes in the College curriculum recommended by the Association weri adopted. In 1896, the Association for the first time conducted. in co- operation with the Board of Trustees, a campaign for proper state financial aid to the College. In this period, also, branch associations were formed, Alumni records compiled and publications issued while the Commencement Class reunions and Alumni Day in June were developed. The third period, from 1910 to the present time has seen development of Alumni activity corresponding to the growth of the College. The tirst salaried secretary was employed in June, 1910, with a permanent oHiee and since then the Association has made rapid strides. Records have been per- fected and publications issued in increasing number. which, coupled with the activity of the various branch associations has enabled the Alumni to he kept more intimately in touch with Penn State matters. The Booster Campaign. started in 1915. was prt'igreSSing tinely when the XVorld W'ur interrupted and broke down the tieltl organization of the Asso- ciation. During the war the association continued operations by maintain- ing the best possible contacts with those who had entered the service.
