Ii'A'r'1'15E O the lforty-six Men of .Penn State who dedicated to the cause of Freedom and their Country not only the best their Alma Mater gave them, but their lives as well, we inscribe with full hearts this kg volume of LA Vin. Our eyes are full as we think of their untimely end, of the bright dreams of their college days so swiftly closed in night, of the vacant chairs among us in home andifraternity and class circle, but quickly our grief changes to a solemn joy when we realize what it was that they did. Who of us can live a longer life than they, or one richer and more complete, for they obeyed the call of their Country and their God, and sprang unfalteringly to their post of duty whatever it might bring them. They saw an injured country's woe, The flaming town, the wasted field, They rushed to meet the insulting foe, They took the spear-and left the shield. Forever are they a part of the College now, forever will they be young in her eternal youth, forever will they live an inspiration to the rising generations who shall come here to be molded into manhood. Brave souls, they breathed out their lives on the battle-held alone, or in the ghastly hospitals of a foreign land, or in the war-torn villages far from the pitying help of those they loved, but they are not dead. Never were they so alive at Penn State as they are this very hour, they thrill and compel us from their graves. As we stand bowed before the new shrine they have given their Alma Mater, let us pledge, if God shall permit it, a life as rich as theirs: Men ol' State, and can we fail now? Can we falter, can we quail now? Can wc strive for less than victory and the crown? XfVith the mighty days behind us, W'ith the old State bond to bind us, And these hero souls above us looking down? --fa':twAfA'A'A'A'A'A'A'4sAv.s.'A' 'A'A'A'A'A'A'A'NA'A NAfw- S
