First on Pthe pmgrmn was the dedication of the new Mining Building occurring just, before the general assembly in the Auditorium. Governor Brumhuugh was introduced as chief speaker by H. Walton Mitchell, President of the Board of 'Ihrustees. By giving :1 very practical and in- spiring address, His Excellency fulfilled 21 former promise to appear before the students 01 this college. Mr. Curl Vrommm, 0f the United States Depurtnu-nt of Agriculture, was the lust speaker. He emphasized the opportunities for trained ugriculturists. Friday afternoon and Saturday were given over to :1 review of the Cadet. Regiment and various sports and amusements. Few men have appealed to Penn State audiences as did the Rev. Mr. Day of the Labor Temple of New York City. His address at Chapel on Sunday morning was am extraordinary exposition of 11 great work for the laboring ClilSSCS of New York. For the benefit of persons not acquainted with customs of the Penn- sylvania State College. it might be explained that Pennsylvania Day is celebrated annually 0n the first. or second Friday in November and cor- responds to Founder's Day in other institutions.

This movement WZIS inaugurated six years ngu in attemptingr to make the college M the greatest possible service to the people of Pennsylvania. During the first year 1191010ne hundred forty-seven teachers took advantage of the oppurtunity offered them. From that, time on, growth has been by leaps and hounds, until the enrollment 1:151 year reached the remarkable height 01 ten hundred twenty-four. The hrst session W215 directed by Prof. C. T. Koch, State High School Inspector. Tu hi5 elheienvy is attributed the success 01 the first year's work. In 1911, Dr. Samuel 1C. VVeher, now City Superintendent of Schools at Scranton. heeame Dean 01 the Sehool 01 Liberal Arts in the college and served as Director 01 the Summer Session. He served in this capacity 101' three years illltl through his untiring energy and remarkable ability the new movement exlwrienced very mpitl growth. When Dr. VVeher went. to Scranton he wns succeeded by Dr. 15. R. Smith, associate professor of nlztthemuties. Under his splendid leadership the summer session has been stezulily developing until now it. is one 01' the prineilml phases of the work at The Pennsylvania State College. The number of murses has been widely increased to meet the many and varied demands ef the students. 1521011 year has brought greater results.
