He received his degree of Bachelor of Arts at.0hio Stathnivcrsit:y in 188-1. 1901' 21 year following the completion of his college course he served his Alma Mater as Assistant in History, sub- sequent to which time he taught for a period of iivc yours in the public schools of Ohio. Mr. Sparks first came to this institution in 1890 as Principal of the Preparatory Department and 'I'cuchcr of lrlistory, which position he held for iivc years. During this time, also, he took graduate work at: Harvard University. From 1895 to 1908 he held the positions of Instructor in History, Assistant. Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor of American History at the University of Chicago. The Degree of Doctor of Philosophy was conferred upon him by the University of Chicago in 1900. From 1905 to 1908 he was Curator of the Historical Museum, and from 1905 to 1906 Dean of the University College, of the University Of Chicago. Dr. Sparks returned 1:0 The Pennsyl- vania State College on June 15, 1908, as its President, which position he has held since that time. One year after he accepted the presidency of this institution Dr. Sparks received the degree of Doctor of Laws from Lchigh University.
