DV A S LA-VIE- -19 17-2 of the College Athletic Association; he was a leading member of the Washington Literary Society, in the days when the two societies, the Cresson and the XVashington, signilieantly dom- inated the student life; he was on the editorial staff of LA V115 and was a quiet. but strong: worker in the College Y.M.C.A. l'lis course in college was the llatzin-Scientilie, preparatory to the study of law. Upon graduation, lVlR. MITCHELL entered the law olliee of Lyon, hlelx'ce 8c Sanderson. Mr. Charles hdelx'ee, of the lirm, was a Penn State man, 73; a nother member was Mr. A. A. Patterson, Penn State, ,89. This lirm of attorneys was one of the most prominent: in the city ofPittshurgh, and within a few years lVlR. MITCHELL became a partner. The firm is now McKee, Mitchell 8: Alter, and since M r. George lC. Alter has adopted and been adOpted by The Pennsylvania State College, the lirm name denotes a representative Penn State group. lWR. lVlITCIIl-ZLI. is known as a earelul,well-intlormed lawyer and many of his friends have frequently suggested that he is possessed of judicial temperament. He is one of the most prominent laymen in the United Presbyterian Chureh,e on- ductingr in his home church a large Bible class; in addition to this, he has been very active and ell'eetive in general religious and Y.M.C.A. work. ln the latter organization he was for a number of years the president Of the Lawrenceville Branch. Besides heintr a devotee of the links, lVlR. MITCHELL is a worthy antagonist in tennis, and he rides art as a hobby. He has traveled extensively both in his native country and in Europe. In June, 1915, the University of Pittsburgh conferred upon him the degree of Doctor of Laws. In 1896, he married lVliss Anna Cameron, whom he had known from childhood. Mrs. lVlitehell was loved by a large circle of Penn State friends, and her death, which occurred in the autumn of 1908, gave keen sorrow to all who knew her, for she possessed those traitsof character which dominate the best qualities of womanhood.
