irving L. Foster was horn in Washington, D. C., which place was his home for six y inrs. his parents then moving: tn Killingly, Connecticut, his mother's birthplace. where they have resided since. His early edu- cation was received in the private schools of Washington and the district schools of Killingiy. Ile prepared for college in the High school at Danielson, Conn. from which he was graduated in 1888. After teaching; a year in the, district schools t'if'Killingly, he entered Brawn University, graduating with the degree of A. B. with the class of '93. The next year was spent in Brown as instructor in French and graduate student in modern languages. The degree of A. M., upon examination, was granted him in 1894. The ytar 1894-1895 he was a student in the University of Leipzig, Germany. taking work in German and French. In the fall Of 1895 he came to The Pennsylvania State t'iollege as instructor in Romance Languages. which position he held until 1901. when he was made Assistant Professor in charge of the Depart- ment of Romance Languages. He is a member of the national fraternity of Phi Delta Theta and the honorary fraternities Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi. While in Leipzig he was elected to membership in the Verein fiir Neuere Philologie, being the only member in that University frnm the United States. For several years he has also been a member of the Modern Language As- sociation of America. - He is the author of Foundations of French, published by Ginn 81 Ca, in 1900.
