PREFACE. IND READER, We greet you. Ours has been the task, assigned us by reason of years and necessity, to record a chapter of times in- creasing story of the life at State. And what a happy choice of title has been the naming of this, our College annualwuLa Vie - The Life. For ever true to its name it has pictured as vividlv as the pen could portray the undergraduate side of the College life as the undergraduate saw it. There is a saying that history repeats itself. And, seen from afar by those who watch it year by veal and know its life in part, how true this is of a college history. It repeats itself, and the year is the length of its cycle. Each year there is the same monotonous round of events-scholastic, athletic. and socialetill one soon comes to know the seem- ing history of the future years. But, although to him his prophecy proves true, yet to the undergraduate it is only true in part. For. although history may repeat itself. yet who would claim that, knowing the history of Greece, he knew that of Egypt or of Rome? No, if he would know them all, he must read them all. Though the play may be the same, there are different actors on the stage, and our interest centers in themewe are anxious to see how they will play the parts of the villain and the hero. And so it is with the College life, there are different actors on the stage from year to year. and our interest centers in them. There are peculiarities of events and persons that mark the year, and pleasing incidents that break the monotonous round of the daily life; and therein lies half the pleasure of the College life as lived. and therein lies half the pleasure of the College life as re- called to memory. And so it is the record of these things that constitutes this nLa Vie. That this is the true history of the College year we do not claim. For who, in writ- ing of contemporary history. will do it justice. It is bound to be colored by' the likes and dislikes 0f the writer. But we have written the events and incidents of the vear as we saw them. and haye done our best to present you, in picture and in 'story, something of interest for now and the years to come. THE EDITORS.
