JBiograpbicaI. George Gilbert Pond was born March 29, 1861, at Holliston. Mass., where he pre- pared for college. In 1881 he was graduated from Amherst College. During his college course he was a member of the Delta Upsilon Fraternity, received commencement appointment in chemistry, and was among those of his class elected to membership in the honorary society Phi Beta Kappa. After graduation he went to Germany and studied chemistry and mineralogy at the University of Giittingen, returning in the summer of 1882 and teaching for :1 year in the Holliston High School, after which he became Instructor of Chemistry at Amherst Col- lege, holding that position for five years. In 1884 the degree of M. A. was conferred upon him, and in 1889 that of Ph. 1x, both by Amherst College. The summer semester 1885, he spent at Giittingen pursuing his study of chemistry. In 1888 he assumed the duties of Professor of Chemistry at the Pennsylvania State College, and in the interests of his work spent the summer of 1891 abroad. By the courtesy of the Trustees, he was granted leave of absence for the college year 1893-4, in which to continue his studies in German Universities. This was done at the Universities of Berlin and Munich, at the Polytechicunl in Dresden and at the Min- ing Academy in Freiberg. He was married, August 1, 1888, to Helen, daughter of Dwight antltClara Palmer of Amherst, Mass., and is the happy father of three children. 442+
