Aston and Mr. H. Stanley Charles We dedicate our yearbook to you, our class advisors. For thc interest, time, and guidance which you have given to our class for the past three years we are truly grateful. But what was to us of even greater significance than these attentions was your fine manner, your wholesome attitude which remained constant whether the current was running smoothly or turbulently. We recognize that words so often do not adequately describe how we feel. With these few words, we have tried to express our sincerest appreciation. THE CLASS OF 1958 X X E w 'X . Thirty-two MEMORIES ARE MADE OF THIS Like a fascinating patchwork quilt is our high school career, and now that it is over, we see, before our eyes, many colors and designs woven together with strong threads of associations. With time, the bright patches will fade, but the threads of memory will always remain intact. We started our project in our freshman year under the guidance of Robert Frey, president, Ronnie Ulmer, vice-president, Sandy Clark, secretary, and Shirley Brooks, treasurer. In our sophomore year, we added a few more memories when we presented the play, Three on a Bench, with Wendell Charles, Pat McSparran, and Diana Bradley. Encircling that year were the officers, Earl Gerlach, president, Dian: Bradley, vice-president, Shirley Brooks, secretary, and June Evans, treasurer. With our junior year, our quilt grew tremendously. Selected as the school Halloween Queen was Kathy Kauffman, a member of our class. John Hess was the master of ceremonies for our assembly program, Mary Lou McClellan and Larry Oesch had the leads in our play, Father Was a Housewife, and seven in our midst were inducted into the National Honor Society. As the year drew to an end, the Junior Prom added a memorable, bright patch. Our junior class officers were Jack McDonald, president, John Hess, vice- president, June Evans, secretary, and Pat Schank, treasurer. For our senior year, we again chose Jack McDonald as president and John Hess as vice-president, June Evans, secretary, and Pat Schank, treasurer. Out- standing from many other patches, we see that of our senior play, Glamour Boy, with Mary Lou McClellan and Richard Miller playing the leads. In the fall, Loretta Fisher was chosen as our Halloween queen. Never to be forgotten are the senior assembly and the Senior Prom. Harry Frey and Andy Funk were the pride of the class when they were selected for the All-Star Soccer Team, as was Sue Schank, recipient of the D.A.R. Award. Now, like a patchwork quilt, our high school years are unfolded. Occasionally, we may see a square that is a little worn and gray, but these only make the vivid ones more outstanding. Under the guidance of our teachers and our class advisors, Miss Aston and Mr. Charles, our project has been a tremendous success. Finally as our quilt is completed, we can look forward to using it for years to come. In the same way. as we step forward to receive our diplomas, we know that we shall always cherish our high school education, enjoyment, and asso- ciations-and the threads of memory shall always remain strong and intact. Shouts of get rid of the ball, drive, dribble and an occasional ouch from the owner of the shin that just collided with a hockey stick were very familiar sounds to anyone who passed near the hockey field the first few weeks of school. After a few short weeks of practice our new hockey coach, Mrs. Wiggins, announced the members of the team, and the team chose June Evans and Ann Shriver as co-captain. The girls fought hard but victories came even harder and at the end of the season the team was in last place. ln addition to playing their regular schedule the Penn Manor hockey team attended the first annual Hockey Playday in Lancaster County held at Hempfield High School. The team considered the day a success when Kay Charles was selected to the Second All-Star Team of Lancaster County and Carol Habecker re- ceived honorable mention. However, win or lose the hockey girls had lots of fun and they are sure that with very few players graduating this year, the next few years at Manor should be much better hockeywise. Squeaky clarinets, blasting trombones, and jam sessions, constitute those queer sounds which come from the gymnasium about eight o'clock every morning, Monday thru Thursday. Don't be alarmed by these noises, for it is only the band preparing for a hard hour of practice. This organization, consisting of eighty members, under the capable direction of Mr. Harold Wild has seen many honors come its way during the past year. Starting in September, they marched to victory, by winning first place in a parade at Elizabethtown. This was the second year in succession that the band received that honor. The band finished the month by marching in parades at Ephrata, New Holland, and Mt. Joy. On October 31. the band traveled to Hanover, Pennsylvania to compete against twenty high school bands from Pennsylvania and neighboring states. There they also captured tirst prize for the second year in succession. Then, on Novem- a ber 23. the band again had the honor of es- corting Santa Claus to the Watt lgl Shand Department Store in Lancaster. After the Christmas Concert, the band spent all its time preparing for the out- standing Spring Concert, which is always a high point in school events. Through the sale of Prom Peanuts, the band is able to take a trip to New York City at the close of each school year. The trip is just a small reward for the etlorts shown by everyone in the band. ,lark Slate tljlnrariaul. ltlarlmara Slut-rts 'Su-nt. taryl. ltarl Us-rlavlt l5ttule-nt llirvt'torl. The Glee Club. under the able direction of Mrs. Harsh. has been one of the busiest groups around this year. As soon as we were organized, we started working on the Assembly Program and concert for Open House. What a time we had going Round and Round with My Fair Lady ! The Christmas Concert came up next. Following that we began to work very hard preparing for County Chorus. Ann Shriver. Pat McSparran. Earl Gerlach. and Dave Lehman represented us at the District Chorus Festival in February. Almost immediately we began working very hard on the operetta. Medics and Merriment . Ending the season. we sang at Baccalaureate. The Glee Club extends a vote of thanks to the ever faithful accompanists, Pat Mc- Sparran. Sue Strubhar, and Barbara Holler. ll. Io Hi l':1I S1'l1a11lt t'l'rQ-:1s.l. Whether it be Rock'n Roll or slow dreamy music. the Penn Manor Dance Band, under thc capable direction of Mr. Wild, can bring it to us. The Dance Band is one of our favorite organizations, because. by means of assemblies throughout the year. they bring, to us not only our favorite Pops . but also some favorite old- time standards. They send us not only in assemblies. but also at dances, both here and at other schools. Too, they play beautiful dining music for numerous banquets. Of course. no dance band is complete without vocalists. Loretta Fisher, Kathy Kauffman. and .lim Sellard warble many a pretty tune for us.
