Senior Class Histor f As Freshman our plane first began shaping itself, though it wasn't until a year later that it was ready for take-off. Then we boarded the piane together and pre- pared for the flight as Airmen 3rd Class 1Sophomoresl. In Greek quoth Mr. Stanley Charles, Sophomore means wise tsophosi and foolish tmorosvf' and how we tried to prove we were wise but not foolish. It was an extreme change from the Junior High where we were the leaders since we now had to be the followers, at least till we learned the ropes. We elected ,lim Murry as our pilotg Jerry Brenner, co-pilot, Sandy Long, stewardessg and Jerry Eckman, bombadier. Our main crew-sponsored activity was the Sophomore Assembly, ably directed by our navigators, Miss Rosemarie Ives and Mr. Lester Charles. Soon our initial training flight was over though and we landed briefly to refuel. And so brief it was! Before we realized it, we had been promoted to Airmen 2nd Class Lluniorsb. ln our first meeting we chose the following commanding offi- cers in order of importance: Ronald Hovis, Harry Stigelman, Priscilla Brown, and jerry Eckman. The Halloween party arranged cooperatively with our superiors, the Seniors. was the beginning of our yearis activities. And none of us will forget how proud we were when that certain classmate of ours, Pat Derrickson, won Sphooknacht Halloween Queen at McCaskey on that October night. Later others brought us honor when nine members of our class were admitted to the National Honor Society in February. Our ,lunior Play, 'lThe More the Merriern was presented after we finally got two dates when it wasn't snowing or something! Soon we began planning Shamrock Holiday , the ,lunior Prom. The old Alma Mater sure looked different that night! Finally, after climaxing the year with a class skating party at Maple Grove. we again landed to refuel. During this brief stop-over between flights, some of our members rescheduled their flights so that we were lacking several of the crew when we again realized that tl1e plane was fueled and ready for take-off. As Airmen lst Class we got our rings and before we knew what was going on the Senior pictures were being taken. Flight officers were again chosen: James Murry, pilotg Susie Flory, co-pilot, Joyce Eckinger, Stewardess, and Jerry Eckman, faithful bombadier. ln a class meeting we decided that we would not repeat the ,lunior-Senior Hallo- ween party but have a Senior get-together on the night of graduation. ln October, Carol Kauffman, a member of our class, was chosen as our school Halloween Queen. In November our Senior Class play was given, Miss Norma B. Aston worked hard with the cast and the result was Cash and Carrie . By December we had chosen our class colors, blue and silverg our class flower. the blur' earnationg and our motto, The higher we rise, the broader the view . We also gave our class assembly program early this same month. The year flew and before we knew it the Senior Prom, Baccalaureate and Gradua- tion were over. Climaxing our fiight training, we made the annual Senior trip to Washington, our nation's capitol. And so the years passed, quicker than we thought possible, leaving us with only memories of the dances, games, friends, teachers and even the hated exams which had been part of our school years, and were never again to return. Now we were out of basic training and the choice of fiight schedules from here on was ours alone .... Thirty-three Senior Class Prophecy I c On a crisp ,Iune day in 1976, as I was paging through an old album, I came across our class motto- The higher we climb, the broader the viewf,-and it gave me the longing to go for a plane ride. On a sudden notion I called the airport and told the receptionist, Elaine Stauiler, to reserve me a seat on the noon 4'I'lousewife's Relaxation Tripf, Dressing quickly, I called to the carpenter, Doris Kreideris husband, to tell my husband that there was a message on the table for him. In my rush to get started I almost fell into the ditch for the new pipeline in front of the house which Roy Barley's men were working on. Some of them I recognized-Gerald Heidlauf, William Herr, Harold McMullen and Harry Stigelman. Getting into the car I remembered it had been sold to us by another former classmate, Harlan Weidman. Since the drive to the airport was a rather long one from Stone Valley I decided to have the gas tank filled at the neighboring gas station owned by Bill Rylee and Ronnie Spong. ln the exchange of conversation which followed I learned that Bill had seen Fav Sangrey and Chip Patterson and they had seemed very happy. He had also talked to .Ioyce Eckingefs husband recently and learned they had just bought a new house from Glenn Porter's Real Estate agency. Later on the way to the airport I passed prosperous-looking farms belonging to Elvin McMichael, David Hess, and Raymond Brakefield. Once, II guess I had been gradually speeding upl I was pulled over by a policeman who turned out to be none other than Gary Frey whom I had last seen policing at Maple Grove roller rink. Since this was my first ollense he let me off with a warning which he said he had also given to Lloyd Lefever and Glenn Ressler that same morning for going through stop signs. With no more distractions I finally reached the airport. The parking attendant, Eric Gustafson. said hello and informed me that Yvonne Prangley and Phyllis Ament had just arrived with their children to board the plane too. After I had purchased my ticket from Betty Erb, I boarded the plane to find that Pat Derrickson and Sandy Long were stewardessesg Robert Fellenbaum, pilotg and Robert Barton, Co-pilot. .Iohn Humphreys was the navigator. Looking around I noticed that Kath- ryn Keener and Nora Mae Keeport were also passengers. Then looking out over the metropolis as the plane rose gently off the field, aided by the control tower where Thomas Cauler and Richard Charles sat constantly on the alert. I recognized the places where other school-mates were employed. Passing over the fair grounds, privately owned by Ronald Hovis, I thought of Jerry Brenner's world-famous steer on exhibit there and ,lay Brennemanis prize pigs. I was reminded that Hope Weaver, Ira Lefever, and Sally Huber all had winning horses there and that Darwin Johnson had his fabulous painting on display. In the science division I remembered that Bill Brackhill and Clair Bleach- er had their newest invention up forthe decision ol the judges and that Gerald Eckman, the Einstein of ,76, was making his first personal appearance in a county fair. As the plane dipped down a little closer over the fair I saw the well-known state band conducted by James Murry containing quite a few past friends-Winnie Grob, Robert Kreider. Ronald Peters, Curtis Wertz, Marlene Campbell, Sherlyn Sangrey and Carl Lefever. Not too far from the fair grounds the Stockyards' Restaurant owned by Gerald Brady stood. Here, I recalled having seen ,Ieanette Crouthamel, Lucille Sage and Barbara Shenk acting as wait- resses with entertainment provided by that song-bird Carol Kauflman. Thirty-four Senior Class Prophecy f Soon the plane passed over the hospital where, I remembered, Colleen Mooney, Dorothy Von Nieda, Irene Charles and Faye Groff are nursing. Colleen, I recalled, had just been in the nursery with Bea Brubaker's third boy when I last spoke with her. It seemed she also said that Janet Rankin had been in recently, to have her gall bladder removed, I think! It was at this hospital also that Doris Shriver and Margot Slagel had conducted their research on the horrible disease, cancerloses, with the aid of Robert Broome and Richard Ferry. Kay Brosey was acting as receptionist and George Stevenson manned the elevator the last time I visited there. About this time lunch was served in the plane by the stewardesses and we learned that Judy Frey and Gwen Arinent had been responsible for its preparation, with Jim Schwebel as chief dietician for the United Bird Lines. Looking down again I saw the speech clinic headed by Susie Flory who was aided by her head assistants, Pauline Good, Betty Graver, Marilyn Folkman and Larry Bender. Donald Bitner is the doorman and Paul Farmer, the janitor, at this great institution. Just across the street the bank, owned by Doris Mylin, rose in great beauty. Lance Newswanger acts as head teller here and ,Iack Deaner and John Dombach drive the armoured car to and fro. Pat Barnett, Sue Barton, Roberta Beacham and Elvina Herr were private secretaries there. ,lust a little farther on we passed the Charles Ressler Theater, which was presenting The Private Life of Richard Gerlitzki under the direction of Charles Yingst and James Weaver with John Cainer in the lead and Patsy Kreider, Deanna Ashley, Abe Funk and Janet Warfel in the supporting roles. Circling back around the city we passed over the James Holton Steel Plant which Donald Sewers manages with the aid of such subordinates as George Schmidt, Eugene Shaiebly, Edward Ressler and Paul Rohrcr. Sara Barley is the able secretary to the business manager, Robert Rohrer. Last be- fore reaching the landing field again we flew over the Childrens, Home where such willing helpers as Margaret Zimmerman, Mahlon Habecker, Betty ,lean Groff and Dorothy Wiser are employed by the joint owners, Marguerite McNally and Francine McMillen. Quite often such stars as Ronald Penny- packet, a magician, with Audrey Mylin, his assistant, and Robert Karr, world-known singer, enter- tained the children free. Reaching the car again, I realizfed that I had better stop for groceries before going home. So I stopped in at the local market owned by the Witmer twins, Dan and Dave, and while Fred Warfel was grinding the beef, who should come in but my old pal Norma Heisey! She said she loved her home and family and that she'd just seen Stella Karr in a new car down at the gas station. Mary Ellen Habecker checked me out soon and I traversed the few miles home feeling very satisfied at having remembered all of my classmates and their occupations and feeling very tired at the idea of having dinner to cook for six by 6 p.m.l I! As usual we started our year by electing an editor and an editor in chief. Then with the guid- ance of Mr. Charles we began the task of preparing Manotfs yearbook. Staff members scurried hither and yon collecting write-ups. pictures, and advertisements. And then. though it seemed almost impossible, all was complete and the Trumpeter went to the printer. During the time until we next saw it, we sometimes wondered if our yearbook would be as success- ful as we hoped it to be. Finally we saw the finished product and were not disappointed. We hope that you will enjoy reading the Trumpelcr as much as we have enjoyed preparing it for you. Arlvisor ....... -- Mr. Stanley Charles Ealilor-Ill-Chief -- ....... Here comes the band! And at the head of it is none other than the high-stepping lassies and their silver twinkling batons. You can see in every step how proud they are to represent Manor. What is a majorette? Let's look at what Mr. Webster has to say: a female ollicer of a band that leads and directs its movements with a stick or a baton. Yes, all we need to use those sticks as Mr. Webster says, is Bonnie and her sparkling personality, Lorraine and her sweet ways, two busy girls, each named Ann, and peppy June. These girls were quite an asset to the band when it came to winning awards. Away they go, up the street, stepping to the heat of drum and crash of cymbal, throwing golden sun rays from their spinning batons. There goes the band! There go the majorettes!
