We’re your captains and presidents and sports stars: we get to wear the “P”. Most of the time you don’t think about being a senior at all (the class of ’72 never did do too much thinking anyway). But every once in a while it catches up with you: you count the days left until graduation and remember that this is the last Christmas you’ll ever have at Penn High. And everybody laughs at you for being so goofy, but inside they know they feel the same way. “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness ...” Sometimes, you could hardly wait for Senior Day and sometimes you wished this year would never end: some weeks went by so fast and some days dragged on so long. Being a senior is a once-in-a-lifetime happening . . you never could go back and you’d never really want to . . it’s what we’ve waited 12 years for, and now it's gone. rsss ?9 . • , There will be an answer Let it be. We’re a little scared, a little cocky, and not real bright, all at the same time, but we manage somehow. We don’t eat senior high leftovers everyday; some days you don’t leave us anything. Supancic, H. Keffer. Our track team in its first year in competition, came through with a surprising season considering that none of the players had any idea what a track team was supposed to be like. Although having no previous experience, the boys responded well to Mr. Maloney's encouragement and did their best, under the circumstances. They competed against tough schools and a lot of hard work was necessary to place in the events. Jon Hatch’s amazing ability at Mt. Pleasant earned him a second place in the hurdles (pretty good for never jumping a hurdle before the meet). He also held the record for taking off his sweat pants after practice. (3.3 seconds). Jon was one of the team’s lettermen along with Dave Maxham, Tim Steele, Brian Yeargers, Eric DeVincentis, and Alan Rudick. Others working hard and turning in gutty performances were Bruce Saddler and Mike Sartori in the discus; Bill Brown and Jeff Frye in the broad jump; and Ron Supancic in the relays. Highlights of the season were Dave Maxham’s first place finishes in the highjump, the team's victory over Trafford, and all the time spent in practicing events that had never been attempted before (remember pole vaulting and the tires?). With 71’s experience behind them, the trackmen of 1972 look forward to bigger and better things in the season to come. Baseball '71 started out, as always, with the snow still on the ground and practices held in the gym. Greensburg Central, the first game and first loss, was the beginning of a long, cold, windy season. With only 3 returning lettermen, the Indians were very inexperienced, but by the start of section play the team was ready to take on giants like Gateway, E. Allegheny, Plum, and Franklin. The section record was 7 wins — 7 losses. Fine performances were turned in by seniors Ted Wolicki, who played anywhere and everywhere; Ross Pi-raino, hustler award winner; and Bob Reeger, most valuable player. Denny Detar never could seem to catch those foul pops and Frank Gnesda never did get rid of his sore arm. First base was always a mystery: would it be Stouffer. Varga, or Goody? But pitching was no problem. If Rogers could lift his arm, he would pitch. Lee's record was 6-1 and Mr. Kelly prayed for rain when he couldn’t throw. No one could ever forget about that black day at Mt. Pleasant or batboy Billy Volkar who only went to the games that had candy stores near the ballfield. The '72 season looks good with 8 returning lettermen: Rudy Bohince, Ron Evans, Joe Niemiec, Lee Rogers, Craig Varga, Bill Good, Jim Moose, and Fred Huether. STANDING: C. McWilliams, P. Blasinsky, L. Rogers, J. Frye, L. Liprando. KNEELING: C. Kidney, R. Pierce, G. Barker, T. Barton, J. Schroder, E. Lach. They don't give us pep rallies and we don’t take cheerleaders along to our matches (not that, we'd MIND if they'd come). But we do get to skip trig 3 days out of 5. Why am I chasing this crazy ball around? That guy from Franklin’s so good he must own a golf course, but hell, that didn't do Frye or Liprando any good. McWill owes me a milk shake (if I win). I should really get good at this game — I can’t afford it. Rogers, Blasinky, Liprando, Frye, and McWilliams are all seniors. This team's gonna feel it when we graduate. The season didn't start out exactly as we wanted; we had a few heartbreakers and close losses. But we beat Yough for the 2nd straight year and that got us going. Everybody wanted to beat Jeannette just one more time, but we couldn't do anything against them. (But neither could anybody else). Against Duquesne Nick pulled a win out of the rain and mud to give us a chance at a winning season. The tough loss at Southmoreland blew that, but we had something more important to look forward to — the last Penn High game ever. Mr. Kelly, the coaches, the players, the students, and anyone who ever went to Penn wanted this one. It was the team's last chance to show what it had. They didn't let us down. Evans and Bohince tore up Plum on the ground to get the last victory ever for Penn. Some of the fans even tried to tear down the goal posts, but our local cops weren’t in the same mood and proved to be the villians of the hour. Although it was a long way from that first one some 35 years ago, the last game and the last team will never be forgotten. The arrival of the really hot weather marked the beginning of another Penn High football season. Everyone worked hard while Down Over the Hill” and frolicked (?) in the gym during the dummy battles. The meals seemed to be worse than last year for everybody except a few guys, the most famous of whom was Eat-A-Meal. Many of the experiences that will be remembered didn't happen over the hill but in the parking lot and the locker room. The legends of Hit-A-Kid, Steal-A-Bar, and Watch-A-Play will last longer than any of the bruises and pains we suffered during the season. All the work and sweat they'd gone through at Sunrise paid off for seniors Mike. Dave, Gary, Denny, and Bruce this year. The season was long and the practices hard, but their interest never slackened, for if you enjoy the game as these guys do. you always have a desire to keep going. How 'bout there? Can you feel it here? These are some of Miss Caruso’s favorite expressions that we hear a lot at Indianette practice. Swollen ankles, torn ligaments, a broken foot, a stiched-up chin, bruises and scratches — what a season! I doubt if we ever had a practice session without at least one injury. But it wasn’t all bad. There were stops at Mother's Little Helper on the way to practice to keep us from starving, and the bus rides were long, but certainly not quiet. Then there were our games. Remember the one where most of our players fouled out? We would have preferred men referees; they seemed to be less biased. The agony of defeat was a common thing for us, but we took it calmly. After all, we were playing teams with a lot more experience. The thrill of victory was rare, but when we won everyone knew because we were proud. One wrestler was undefeated also this year. (Rick Matrisch 11-0) Seniors Don Grant and Rod Florek also deserve mention for outstanding seasons. The team doubled the number of pins over last year's team and as the history of wrestling at Penn High came to a close, the boys had done something that no other Penn wrestling team had done before. But toward the middle of September, we practically had to start over again. We finally were straightened out for basketball and sat back and decided that in the confusion we had had a great time. We ate lots, practiced lots, painted lots, and tried to reconstruct arms and legs. (Feet, too, Freeman.) We even twirled batons. Our greatest times were spent cheering our teams (football, basketball, and wrestling). And now we know we’ll always be cheerleaders at heart. hey, take a look at Penn! JV Cheerleaders have to be the underdogs of the cheering squads. The JV's always come after the varsity squad. No one ever comes to our football games, and it isn’t easy cheering for both the JV and varsity wrestling matches. We even got kicked out of Monroeville Mall! But you know what else? People might have noticed the uniforms that we made for hot summer parades and for pep-rally days. We worked hard all summer for the money and trophies that our band won at parades and at the Hempfield and Norwin band festivals. Problems? Wow! It really hurt whenever students complained that we did the same thing every week. Our season began in June, practicing almost every day; waking up Sunbirch Drive at 8:00 in the morning with “What the World Needs Now is Love.” but few neighbors got the message. All our hard work was worth the effort when we received the 3rd place trophy at Kenneywood in Tri-State Competition. No one could have been prouder than we were. We not only marched for this competition but also in parades and band festivals, plus all the nerve-racking pep rallies and cold football games. Did you ever try to perform in a short skirt with all the football players eyes glued to the stage? Or feel the emptiness inside whenever you dropped your baton at the senior high pep rally? How about that “warm”feeling while twirling a fire baton? Was it all worth it? Of course — our names will live on at Penn High (unless somebody paints the dressing room walls.) and the beat goes on! Long early practices and loud verbal commands made things a bit different for our band this year. During the summer, band members could be seen putting lines and footprints on the road in bright yellow paint. Band festivals, the trophies, parades, the honors, football games, and pep rallies all made our fall season one of the best. We even took first place in some of the competitions we entered. During concert season, things settled down ... a little. But there were days when Mr. Bench was attacked by a bombardment of paper airplanes. Solos featuring senior members of the band accented our concerts and showed everyone the talent our musicians really had. It was the last year for the Penn High School Band and we were proud to play some of the best music in the best way to show other schools that we were just as great! TOP: D. Decker. M. Shaffer. P. With determination and diligence, we practice every Tuesday and Thursday to learn our songs. First, we start with the basses, then add tenors, altos, and finally, sopranos. Sometimes, we even have 1st and 2nd altos and 1st and 2nd sopranos. Then presto! We have a great sound. It takes a lot of patience on Miss Matteo's part and on our part to rehearse the same songs over and over again until we get them together and the harmony is just right. But it’s worth the effort. We wanted to make this the best, the most beautiful, the most fantastic yearbook Penn High ever saw. Probably some of you hate it. We hope somebody out there likes it. No doubt we bruised a lot of feelings, we misspelled names and a lot of faces got cut out of a lot of pictures. We wanted to say goodbye to Penn High with a bang: to make this a pic-ture-and-words book that will bring back a lot of good memories. The first day of school in 7th grade, the first guy you ever went steady with, skipping out for lunch, your worst enemy, yourself — we tried to get it all together and keep it forever on film and paper. Rita Vitolo —Co-Editor we tried harder 20 years from now dig the ’72 yearbook out from under your bed and have a good laugh. Cheryl Q IBene— Business SEATED: Mr Sadler. Mr. Coleman. Student Council begged, the gym teachers coaxed, and most of the senior girls cried. Finally, the powers-that-be gave up and let us have our way. Our Love Story turned out to be almost an all-senior affair (but almost everything the Class of '71 did was an all-senior affair) A kiddies' matinee that was more of a dress rehearsal got the whole school down in the gym to watch the show: that made it easy to skip out at 2:30. But the show wasn't too bad: we got to see the senior girls tie themselves in crepe-paper knots and get a good-bye kiss from their waltz partners. Valetta had to duck six inches every time she turned: Mike kept tripping over Amy’s feet: and Margie danced like a pro: if you looked real close, you could see the guys mouthing one, two. three, one, two, three But everybody looked like they were having a good time and some of their glow and enthusiasm rubbed off on the rest of us Suddenly. May Day didn't seem so corny after all. Seniors: Kent Weightman + Kathy Sexton. Sophomores: Alan Rudick + Robin Hood. Juniors: Craig Varga + Anita Berg. King: TomYenner-ell. Queen: Karen Lehosky. That's because we juniors organized the whole thing (or so Mr. Eaton said) slaving in that refreshment stand — what a job! Pans to scour, coffee to make, potato chips, pizza, hot dogs — you name it, we sold it (or gave it away). Late in October, during the magazine campaign, the orders were in such a mess that Mr. Eaton pulled his hair and threatened to resign as junior class advisor. (Now you know why Mr. Eaton is bald.) The junior high almost got their first prom in 1971. but it's not our fault that those seventh graders beat us to every magazine subscription in the district. But who worries about money? Now we were getting down to the really heavy decisions. like whether to order the free favors that looked like skunks. ''Do you think he'll ask me?”, ' Would she go with me? The scheming was really getting thick, but by April, the whispers had changed to How should I do my hair? and What color gown should I wear? (A dictionary? For me? The only thing I ever looked up in a dictionary was dirty words.) Senior day means throwing lollipops from the back of a U-Haul and saying good-bye to everybody. It's yearbooks, and crying, and laughing, and two cookies free; your last chance to break the school speed limit. It’s Move-Over-Seniors-Day. just begun! This group is supposed to be the leaders of tomorrow? These kids grew up beside me — I watched them grow from 97-pound weaklings to 197-pound weaklings. I don’t know anything about anything. Why do I have to graduate? I couldn’t wait to get out of this place, so why can't I bear to leave it now? Good ol’ Penn High — we called you a dump and wrote on your walls, but you gave me an excuse to get out of the house. 8 hours a day. 5 days a week. 36 weeks a years. 12 years. Who's kidding who? I'm supposed to remember this stuff you fed into my brain? I slept most of the time and fooled around all other times and you know it. This Class of '71 turned out some pretty decent people. We had a good football season, an OK basketball season, and besides that. Penn High had a track team for the first time in its life. Seniors thought they ran the school, hassled the seventh-graders, skipped classes, and thought they were great. They were Seniors and they played it for all it was worth. Screwed up? It certainly was different. Does ridiculuous describe how you feel riding in a golf cart, on display for a standing-room only crowd? Hilarious, maybe, and kind of dumb, but its not an experience that you soon forget. But it was our homecoming and we were proud of it. We worked hard, (that's what we told Mr. Blank and the teachers, but don't you believe it) Everybody loves skipping classes to measure golf carts down at Liprando's and to decorate them. Since when does it take two hours to go to K-mart for crepe paper? By pep-rally time the whole school was thinking only one thing: WHO? A well-kept secret, huh. Dave? Finally, we knew. And Merry Christmas, Darling!! 160 Our first senior class party, scheduled for the day before Thanksgiving, got snowed out. So nobody was really surprised when it started to snow right after the early bus bell January 27. That night. Monroe Bowl offered pool, bowling, and roller-skating; we added sleeping on the tables. There was a pool tournament and almost the entire Claridge bowling team made it; by January, seniors were betting on snow for graduation. The class of '72 had fantastic luck.
