The boys were looking forward to shop (?) and the girls were worried about taking showers in gym class. We elected Chuck Miller President of the Student Council, but we were just beginning to learn the problems of dealing with the upper classmen. In eighth grade we felt that we belonged a little more, but we still looked up to the big kids and wondered what it was like to have classes besides art. gym, and shop in the other building. We had to stand up everytime Mr. Fresch came into the room, and in math class we had to duck the flying objects. In the end, it seemed an O.K. year. We were trying to grow up and we didn’t know how. Three months later we moved to the Senior High and felt like little kids again. Everyone kind of enjoyed bossing us around, but we held our own and fought back. We had to read Nautilus 90 North and Great Expectations, which made Mr. Ross very happy and most of us very miserable. The next year we were split into different courses — some of us taking our second year of a language, the rest of us taking typing or geography. Now we were allowed to go to the Senior High assemblies, which wasn't quite as much as it was cracked up to be. By now we were finding out that nothing was quite as much as it was supposed to be. . Our Junior year. Although it was only last year, it's hard to remember anything worthwhile that happened to us. Getting our class rings made us feel important for a while (a few days, really), but soon we were back to normal. Lots of us started thinking about college and business schools, not because we wanted to, but because going to your counselor every month and having nothing to say got pretty ridiculous. Our basket ball team's winning the championship and going to the Fieldhouse was about the most exciting thing that happened to us. We started our last year of high school off early by getting our Senior pictures taken in August. Lots of our traditions gave way, but our screaming at the Administration didn’t help get them back. Drama Guild. May Day. and dances after athletic events were all dropped in one way or another. This year the All Senior Basketball Team (well, almost all senior team) came up with another great sea son. Back or the academic scene, though. So many of us dropped Trig and Physics after Mid-terms that the rest of us were hoping the classes would be dropped because of insufficient membership. One final comment. Your high school years are supposed to be the best years of your life. But after graduating, we’ve come to one conclusion: whoever said that must have been a teacher! Wilkens Doug Joseph 49 R wejLrcsen The annual May Day Program was held on May 9th and 10th with Mrs. Larson in charge once again. But a different feeling was present this year — a feeling of really having done something great. At the final dress rehearsal (which got you out of three classes), you found that that routine which seemed so ridiculous to you really didn’t look so bad after all. On the big night, the gym was stuffy as usual but the crowd soon discovered that the programs made good fans. As you watched the King and Queen march in, it hit you that everything was gonna be O.K. Even though your umbrella wouldn't go up and your skateboard flew out from under you, deep in your heart you knew no one REALLY noticed. 51 52 Last year we really worked to make money for the Junior-Senior Prom. Besides manning the refreshment stand at football games, we made our own subs and sold them to raise some cash. It was a lot of work, but we did it. Cherlon Petrill S T.i tr mmw 1 'JB When the big day came everything was hectic. The office was swamped with ealy dismissals for the girls while the guys had to stick out the rest of the school day. It was tortuous for the girls to sit under the hairdryer so many hours, and meeting her parents gave you boys an Excedrin headache. But once you got to the Adam’s House, you knew it was worth it. After the pictures and dinner, some of you danced while the rest of you sat around and talked. At a quarter till five you took one last look cause you knew that soon you’d return to Everyday People. 53 54 Touching the line became a regular ritual at practice and everyday it seemed to get tougher. Each night we'd hear T.K. yelling, “No, put the ball through the hoop” along with a few other choice words. The whole thing got pretty hectic, yet it paid off. We all felt a certain awe when we entered the Field House. Remember the firecracker that went off during the game when Ricky was driving in for a lay-up? Both teams sure burned that hoop. Time was running out when the redhead hailed a forty-footer that left the score Frazier 52, Penn 51 ... a hard-fought game, a good game. D E O CJ 55 A Mid-Winter Christmas Ball. Christmas Ball. That’s all you heard around the school after Thanksgiving vacation. For the second year in a row the Varsity P sponsored the event at Greensburg Country Club. The decorations were nice, but everyone commented about the No-Christmas-Tree Christmas Ball. But if you were with someone you liked it didn’t matter. We had live music — from all Sydes. The local group, Syde II, was a success at one of its first local appearances. Somehow, after December 12, Christmas was a lot closer. 56 Night’s Dream 57 So you think the NFL doesn’t do anything? Well, you’re wrong. Christmastime, 1969, Connie, Andi, Diane, and Kirk went to all the elementary schools of the district and told Christmas stories. The NFL’ers were really appreciated. If you don't believe us, just ask Kirk. On December 19 the chorus (directed by Miss Matteo) presented its program. The kids all appreciated their performances not only because they were so good but because they made our classes shorter, and in the last week before Christmas nobody feels much like studying. On December 21 the band performed for us which we also appreciated. The highlight of these programs was the “Sing Along with Steve (Mr. Bench to us.) Drama Guild Tryouts This year, due to sponsorship problems, Drama Guild was a little late getting started. We did do three one-act plays, though — something new to our school. The plays were presented too late to be included in this book, but we do have some shots ot tryouts. Music To Practice By All of this continuous practice, and sometimes extra sessions after school, is for one big performance where we can really show off. We are now transformed from a marching band to a sophisticated concert group and somehow the night of the Spring Concert makes practice sound worthwhile. 63 National Honor Society Here we are, “The Bookworms.” People think we spend all our time studying, but we know that’s not true. We're athletes (right, Jim, Chick, and Bill?). In our ranks are cheerleaders, majorettes, artists, members of DECA and editors of our yearbook and newspaper. Some of us are in the chorus, in the band, and most of us are in Drama Guild. We’re diversified (notice the big word?). It's just that getting good grades is one thing we all have in common. J. It was on a Saturday afternoon and the weather matched our spirits after the game. But the next week we played Brentwood and were winning almost the whole game. Everyone kept thinking, If only we can hold ’em!”, and we did. 14-12 is a small margin but it’s enough to win. We dropped the next three games in a row to West Mifflin South, Munhall, and Yough. But most of the guys kept saying, Don't worry, don’t worry. Wait till Jeannette!” We were beating Swissvale 6-0 until the last quarter when they tied the score. Fortunately Marcon blocked the extra point and the game ended in a 6-6- tie. And still the guys kept saying, Wait till we beat Jeannette. Wait till next week. The boys were psyched and so were we, especially when we heard reports that Jeannette considered us garbage. Even the News-Dispatch commented on our spirit. Unofficial bets were laid all over the place and we had the best pep rally ever on Friday. And Then . . . Yea, the underdog beat the favored. Susick E. VanSickle This year our exhibition basketball season was unusually long because we ended up with only three wins out of seven games. But we never gave up hope. Everyone knew that the guys were better than their record had shown. We had our first chance to prove it when we played East Pittsburgh on January 6. By the final quarter we had doubled their score and were assured of victory. We kept up our winning streak through the first half of the season. We opened the second half of the season by once again beating East Pittsburgh — this time by a score of 8641. Tim broke the school scoring record by scoring 44 points in one game (notice how he had three more points than their whole team!!). By now everyone had Indian fever and the team was on its way. Our momentum was stopped by a heartbreaking loss to Turtle Creek in the next-tothe-last game of the regular season. We were still Number One, but we had the Trafford game (they were the Number Two team) ahead of us . . . As the yearbook staff, we’ve decided that this year’s team deserves a special section for Crucial Games.” So we’ve added four extra pages. For the conclusion of the team’s story, read 80 We knew we had to beat Trafford on Feb. 13. If we lost, it would mean a three way tie for the section. If we won — undisputed first place. With a few seconds to go, Milburn sunk a field goal and Penn was the Section 14-B champion. The score: 61-59. Between February 21 and February 24 there was only one thing on everyone's mind: Freeport. The office peo pie went wild selling tickets, and the teachers went wild trying to hold class. Then, the night of the game. We walked into Valley's gym to face a screaming Freeport crowd. They were on top most of the game and at one point increased their lead to 8 points. Finally, the mighty Indians started moving. The score was tied up, and we had the ball with a little over a minute to go. We put on a freeze, and, then, with a few seconds left in the game, Tim sank a 20-foot shot. Once again the Indians had come out on top — this time by the score of 61-60. The Agony Of Defeat y v -• The stage was once again set for the big game — this time Penn against Braddock. The Greensburg Salem gym was packed with mostly Penn rooters. The atmosphere was tense, fans were screaming, and then suddenly, the opening jump ball. We took an early lead, but couldn't hold it. Braddock was big, and Billy Knight was hot. The final score was 79-63. Yes, we lost, but the important thing was that our boys never gave up. They played hard, and they played well. They gave our school a name to be proud of. We've tried to do something different. Most of us on the staff have worked harder on this yearbook than we’ve ever worked before. Most of the time we fooled around seventh period and waited until the weekend before the deadline to do anything. We got out of a lot of classes, but usually we didn’t want to. We were so sick of the yearbook by that time (stupid yearbook is what we called it), that we didn't care if we ever saw it again. We tried to make this book informal, something that would REALLY represent us and not a sickeningly sweet tale of all the joys and wonderful times of high school. We tried to take the group pictures in a new way, and were cursed at and screamed at and laughed at until some of us cried. We tried to explain to people the problems that we had, but no one seemed to care. This does seem like a sob story, and it does seem bitter, but it really is the truth. Even some of the staff laughed at the rest of us who worked. All we can say is that we’ve done our best. Maybe we've succeeded, and maybe we haven't. But we really have tried. B. Montgomery A.
