Although not victorious, they showed steady improvement until they suffered a rash of injuries in the second half of the season. The boys, however, should be congratulated on the effort and determination they showed throughout the season. 101 Basketball The Penn Joint basketball team, in its second year of a new era under Head Coach Ted Kukich and new Assistant Coach Ted Mertz, proved to be a hustling, proud, and capable team, as it battled to a close second-place in Section 1 3-B. During the crucial mid-season week, the Penn “Hoopers' faced a third-place Trafford and section leader Turtle Creek. In a continuoulsy close and exciting game against Trafford, the Tomahawks edged the Indians, 71-69. However, our boys came back with a memorable upset over the Creekers, 75-60. In addition to the fact that we had a successful campaign as a unit, individual players also excelled. Junior Rick Schropp was voted most valuable player in 13-B and was also high scorer, with 205 points in league competition. Making the all-star team with Schropp was standout senior Don Hart. For a fast, exciting basketball season, Penn High congratulates the team of '68. Don Hart, first team all-star in Section 13, accumulated 180 points as he finished third in section scoring. This was Don's second consecutive year as all-star choice. Coach Thomas Morrelli s matmen were faced with the problem of building a successful team with only two returning lettermen. Through the course of the season, Penn's wrestlers proved capable of the challenge, sustaining a 6-8 record. Highlights of the season included the county tournament, where grappler Ray Grant advanced as runner-up champ, and Ray Giacomel became the first Penn wrestler to claim a county championship. Attendence at the relatively new sport at Penn High continued to rise, indicating the approval of the sport by students and residents.
