PENN POINT Rtnn Joint High SchooI Cland e 5Fenn£x. fV. Theodore Facut.rr' Alma Mater The fertile fields which give us life and great productive mines Surround Penn Township High School with classic monumental lines; Where new frontiers come into view, new human needs unfold, The challenge of a modern world within our school we hold. The Penn Point is a Memory Book for Penn Joint High School. A year s life crammed into a few short pages. The whole story you won t find here, only pieces, but pieces designed to |og a thought, a remembrance. The book is one to be skimmed now, the pictures are to be en|oyed, laughed at, the time for remembering is not 1 967 for the past is still too linked with the present. But when the mists of years haze these days, the Penn Point will serve as a torch to cut through, to bring back perhaps a smile, perhaps a tear, but al- ways a memory . . . Gym, home-ec, study halls, dances, and assemblies, formerly just heard about from older brothers and sisters, became enjoyable realities. On into 8th grade we went, now one year older and, hopefully, smarter. We were sad to lose our Level Green friends who then went to Trafford. The class party (remember that great Roaring Twenties skit?), the American Legion awards, and all the other activities contributed to another memorable year. Ninth grade found us losing still other classmates to Central Catholic High School. Yet we managed to have more than our share of fun, battling Mr. Ti (remember Knob Hill and Skid Row?) and folk dancing at our class party. We were forced to begin thinking about the future as we decided which courses to take. Attending the senior high assemblies was the first great thrill of our sophomore year. By this time the class of 67 was beginning to take shape and form, just like the clams and frogs we dissected in Room 227. Getting our class rings helped us realize our status as Juniors. During the year we learned responsibility as we successfully ran the refreshment stand and sponsored numerous events (such as the Junior-Senior girls' basketball game — we lost!). All this work certainly had its reward as we danced at Baldoc Country Club on April 29. Sadly we held a farewell party for Dan Gass and Dan Doggendorf, who moved at the end of our junior year. At last — was it really true? We were real, live SENIORS! Although some of us had our senior pictures taken four times, we finally got them. The bonfire, Christmas Ball, Prom, Senior Day festivities, Senior banquet, and Commencement practices kept us busy up to that red letter day. Graduation. But even now as we leave behind six years at Penn Joint High School, we must remember that: This is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. It is rather the end of the beginning. — Winston Churchill 37 ADVISORS AND OFFICERS Mr. Morelli - Advisor, Gary Proskin - Vice President, Robert Stewart - President, Stephanie Stankus - Secretary, Leslie Myers — Treasurer, Mrs. Bengel — Advisor MR. This year we wish to acknowledge these people in the Penn Point. Our five associate teachers, Milo Pepe, Janet Rohrbaugh, Gary Kaukonen, Gary McCoy, and Bill Lang, have brightened these last few months with such activities as teaching, sponsoring the Fledgling (Kaukonen), and working on the yearbook (Lang). The staff and all the students hope that successful years will ensue for these individuals. 57 Through the medio of sculpture, we symbolize the four fundamental facets of student life — the development of which has been the common goal and purpose of twenty-nine years of change and improvement at Penn Joint High School. Consulting printing companies and other school papers for ideas were the beginning of the Pensindian. With Mr. Ross as the sponsor and Donna Milburn as editor-in-chief, the Pensindian went to press with a circulation of 500 to 600. Later in the year the Pensindian was honored by being one of three school newspapers in Westmoreland County chosen by the Westmoreland County Tuberculosis Association to compete in the state finals. Penn Joint has a newspaper to be proud of! 81 Penn Point Staff Not often does anyone have the opportunity of working with an individual possessing the qualities we, the staff, most admire in our advisor, Mr. Theodore Perich. For the laughter, encouragement, and endless patience, Mr. Perich, we thank you. The Yearbook Staff, under the inspiring leadership of Mr. Ted Perich, worked laboriously for six months in an effort to bring to the student body not merely a book of pictures but rather a book of memories. Spending each activity period in the often flooded yearbook room, the staff learned to sacrifice their time in order to preserve a bit of the school year for the students. Knowing little of the preparation of a yearbook, the staff strove to compound a book possessing individuality, quality, and purpose. Through trial and error, the staff quickly learned the ins and outs (mostly outs) of the yearbook preparation. Largely through the patience and understanding of Mr. P. , the staff was able to assemble the 67 Penn Point. The Indians, in their first season of class B football under new head coach Fred Answine, made an impressive showing by finishing the 1966 campaign with a 4-4 record. In the season opener, Penn Joint dominated the entire contest and shut out West Allegheny by a score of 14-0. After this victory the Indians lost three straight to Ford City, Blairsville, and Southmoreland; however they lost none of their spirit or desire to win. The team proved this in the second half of the season as they won all but one of their last four games. In their fifth game the Indians edged Apollo, 7-6. Next came the only loss in the latter half of the season, at the hands of the powerful running Sewickley team. Following the Sewickley loss Penn Joint staged their final home game against West Deer and through great defensive playing went on to defeat them by a score of 13-6. In the season's last game Penn Joint went all out and downed class A Burrell on their own field in one of the best played games of the season. As one might see, this year's team came through with their share of victories. The players did a tremendous job out on the field and represented our school, our spirit, and our capabilities in an appropriate manner. 86 The coaches of Penn Joint are dedicated not only to sportsmanship but also to developing minds and bodies. Mitchell Basketball After a number of disastrous seasons, Penn Joint has come up with a winning basketball team. Under the new head Coach Mr. Kukich and Assistant Mr. Kepple, the Indians had a very respectable campaign with 1 4 victories and only 8 defeats. The team consisted of Seniors: Ted Mitchell, Ron Woods, Ron Darragh, Chuck Schropp, and Bob Doney, Juniors: Don Hart, Rob Stewart, Tom Roskey, and Sophomore Rick Schropp. A new type of competitiveness was instilled by our new coach. Hustle and pride, which were lacking forthe past years, were brought into the picture. Many games which had been lost in the last few minutes in past years were won this year. Numerous hours were spent on the fundamentals of good basketball and this hard work resulted in success. Everyone on the team now knows that it takes just a little more effort to be a winner. The school is now confident that we will have winning basketball teams in the next few years. The team is very thankful to Mr. Kukich for having coached them to a prosperous season. This should bring more people to the games next year and help strengthen the school spirit. Playing this year was no great deal of fun because when you win, there is always happiness. The boys went onto the floor feeling they could win every game and each gave the best of his ability. Congratulations to a fine basketball team. 94 TED MITCHELL BOB DONEY Seniors A basketball team relies on experience. Each year the Seniors see most of the action, with the assistance of their younger teammates. This year five Senior players drove for a winning season. Forward Bob Doney, although he missed most of the season because of injuries, was a good driver. Guard Ted Mitchell greatly improved his playing and was a big help toward the end of the season. The accurate outside shooting of guard Ron Woods combined with the good rebounding of dependable Ron Darragh, a forward, carried the team through a victorious season. Don Hart, a 6'7 Junior, scored 176 points and was second only to the 179 points scored by Barry Driscoll of Turtle Creek. Very close behind was Rich Schropp, a six-foot sophomore, who finished 4th with 161 points. With this type of one-two scoring punch, Penn Joint was able to hold their own against any team. However, it must be taken into consideration that the season s record cannot express a true picture of the team effort. The wrestlers fought viciously in many extremely close matches. Throughout the season, an enthusiastic crowd always present at the matches proved to be a great inspiration to the wrestlers. Many participants and spectators alike will recall the great excitement and pressure that engrossed every match. During the year, the team participated in two tournaments. At midseason Penn Joint placed sixth of the twelve schools entered in the County Tournament at Latrobe High School. Following the ending of the dual match season, the Indians placed fifth of the eight schools entered in the Sectional Tournament at Hempfield High School. In all fairness one must also recognize the Penn Joint individual wrestlers, dressed in the traditional blue and white who made Penn Joint a team never to be underestimated. 100 PENN JOINT OPPONENT 31 Mt. KISTLER CHEERLEADERS MAJORETTES COLOR GUARD Even before the school year began, the Penn Joint cheerleaders were practicing daily, getting ready to cheer our football team to victories. The success of their labors showed at the jubilant pep rallies and exciting football games. Whether performing the fan's favorite Be True to Your School'' or leading Thunderation, these seven girls put both their hearts and souls into their cheers. After the field uniforms and megaphones were finally put away, the cheerleaders began the second season, basketball, with just as much vitality as before. At every game the girls chants could be heard echoing throughout the gym as the two teams fought for points. The last basketball game was a special treat for the two senior members, Linda Irwin (Captain) Sue Wilson (Co-Captain) who for their final time cheered the Indians to a victory. Tlje 1966-67 squad was one of PJ s best and the girls proved that Penn Joint students have, just as the cheer states, Got The Spirit’ and they were proud indeed to be a part of it. They hope the others will carry on the tradition of representing Penn Joint well and cherish the memories of being majorettes as they do. The majorettes of 1966-67 have been together as an entire squad for a second season. Things were hectic during football season, especially trying to make up three routines plus a performance for the pep rally. Hot summer afternoons, evenings after school, and frosty cold mornings were all a part of the hard work which was rewarded by the new uniforms which they wore for the first time at the Apollo game. Although Cyndee and Judy were always laughing, Kathy and Nancy always practicing, Linda always worrying, Brenda always watching, and Sandi yelling, the routines were always practiced and polished for the Friday game. Even the little things, like slipping in the mud, forgetting to come on stage, and dropping the baton twice during a routine, were all a part of the fond memories. The Pink Panther routine was quite a success with the crowd while the Spanish Flea routine made the girls nervous and the people laugh. ft SANDRA BARTON - Heod LINDA RYNCOSKY JUDY BLANK CYNDEE BARTON KATHLEEN DeMONTE NANCY REIDMILLER BRENDA FRYE JANET POLUMBO Working diligently throughout the football season, the Color Guard, under the direction of Mr. Bench, endeavored to lend the band a more impressive air on the field and a bit of comedy to the pep rallies. From its inception three years ago, the Guard has continually shown increased skill and precision in the marching drills. Coaches—Sponsors A newcomer from West Greene, Mr. Fred Answine successfully coached the Indians to an impressive 4-4 record. This showing not only indicates superb coaching, but also foretells greater victories in future years under Coach Answine. The maiorettes, cheerleaders, and color guard hove become on integral port of the school's athletic seasons. With the leadership of Mrs. Janet Wilkinson and Mr. Stephen Bench, these three squads hove developed into very highly skilled units. Four years ago, Mr Thomas Morelli successfully introduced the sport of wrestling to Penn Joint. His work with the team is evident m their repeated victories. Mr. Ted Kukich, in his first year os coach of the varsity bosketball team, has shown himself capable of building a winning team. The school can certainly expect an even better season from Mr. Kukich and his team next year. Mr. Regis Kelly has devoted twelve years to the coaching of the Indian's baseball team. Those of the team who have excelled in this sport are a credit to him. In his sixth year os golf coach, Mr. John lovre has led a determined squad which hove turned out quite impressive records. 113 I 114 HIGHLIGHTS 115 Charlene Loughner and Bill Donini reigned as Queen and King at the annual May Day program, presented in the gym on May 10. Senior members of the court were Marianne Nicholas, Don Mortimore, Donna Fusilli, and Ken King. Juniors Nancy Reidmiller, Dan Gass, Sue Wilson, and Dennis Kashur-ba, and sophomores Leslie Myers, John Borgo, Judy Blank, and Robbie Stewart completed the court. Once Upon a May Day proved to be a success as underclassmen presented routines to entertain the court and the capacity crowd which filled the gym. The program, which included the traditional May Dance by the senior girls, was directed by Miss Martha Zuzich and Mrs. Ardith Larson. 117 Junior- Senior Prom On April 29, 1966, the dreams of the Penn Joint Prom Committee became a reality as our Junior-Senior Prom was held At Baldoc Hills Country Club. Under the direction of Mr. Richard Rizzardi, the fourteen members realized nearly seven months of arduous planning. Not only by running the refreshment stand but also by sponsoring a dance and selling handmade pom-poms, the Prom Committee raised the money to provide Bobby Dale and his orchestra for the evening's entertainment and Stan Wall s post prom party. Dancing for many happy hours, all those who attended shared the thrill and excitement of a prom — the biggest social event of every school year. As dawn drew near, everyone still felt bewitched by the spell of the evening. It was truly a Wonderland by Night. Westmoreland Technical At first glance, the Tech School , as it is known to Penn Joint students, looks like a factory. This is because the school is temporarily housed in a portion of the former Robertshaw Control Company building in Youngwood. But this first impression vanishes as soon as one steps inside the door. Modern facilities and a friendly atmosphere certainly reflect the over $500,000 that has already been used in developing the school. As soon as long range needs are determined, the building will be vacated and permanent facilities acquired. The Central Westmoreland Area Vocational-Technical School is the result of a concerted effort on the part of the Westmoreland County Board of School Directors to provide Technical and Vocational educational opportunities for students of the area served. School systems participating include Hempfield Area, Jeannette, Mt. Pleasant Joint, Norwin, Penn-Trafford, and Yough School District. Penn Joint has 32 students at the school. The courses offered are separated and classified as Technical or Vocational. Technical Courses are designed for students who may be planning to continue their education in college, as well as those who plan to terminate their formal education at the end of high school. The Vocational courses are intended for those students who are definitely planning to secure employment upon completion of high school. Most courses include theory as well as practical work. Acrid smells and the whirr of hairdryers greet the visitors to the Beauty Culture (Cosmetology) rooms of the Tech School. The girls all wear white uniforms and shoes as they do practice work. Penn Joint Students enrolled in this course are Betty Auckerman and Pat Cassidy. After the girls have completed the three year course, they must pass the State Test to become licensed operators. The students in Mechanical Drafting and Design Technology include Don and Ron Hart and Harry McAllister. These boys use enormous drafting boards and very very expensive, complicated gadgets in their studies with Mr. Barnes. 120 Area Vocational School Ted Bair is Penn Joint's representative in the Agriculture course. This includes classroom and shop instruction in agriculture science, farm mechanics, and agri-business with experience through individual supervised farming programs or work experience. The Auto Mechanics course provides instruction in overhauling and maintenance of all mechanical and electrical parts. Veryl Heard studies in this department. The machine shop is a conglomeration of hard-working boys, one of which is Lloyd Smith. The boys with their safety glasses learn from Mr. Lang the production of machined items to blueprints and specifications. Dennis Kupcheck and Sam DeMarcki study drafting at the Tech School. This course includes the use of drafting instruments, lettering, theory of projection, and blueprint making. Girls as well as boys may take drafting, under the teacher, Mr. Buchanan. The Electronic Computer and Data Processing course is one of the most interesting areas of the school. The complex machinery is operated by Eileen Curry and Bill Supancic. The students study data processing, programming, coding, and computer feasibility. Systems, key punch, console and unit record operation are included. The friendly, interested teachers, the efficient and attractive facilities, the intent students — all combine to make the Tech School a big success. 121 Memoirs of Girls were primping and boys trying to act dignified in their cutoffs and suit jackets as senior pictures were taken to start off the '66- 67 school year. Due to unfortunate circumstances many of the seniors had to go through the same procedure not only once but as many as four times. But the reward was great on the day we got our pictures. Seventh graders, timidly but eagerly, started their first day of junior high as the teachers were at their wits end trying to organize and rearrange schedules. Everyone was anticipating the first football game, which turned out to be a smashing victory over West Allegheny. The student body had a frenzied bonfire in which the football players joined the majorettes and cheerleaders in dancing around the soaring flames. We burned in effigy the notorious West Allegheny football player as shouts of victory rose from the enthusiastic crowd. School spirit reached its peak the next day at the afternoon pep rally. Later in the year, we all enjoyed an outdoor pep rally — the first known to the seniors. The team went on, under the leadership of coaches, Mr. Answine, Mr. Denser, and Mr. Kelly, to bring home a respectable 4 4 record. None of us will ever forget the joy of victory and the fun of after game dances. The juniors were also rewarded by the success of their operation of the refreshment stand to raise money for the prom. The junior high showed their annual high rate of participation in the magazine campaign as Becky Black brought home her record array of prizes. The school was amused by the antics of Drama Guild initiations and when the final tormenting took place, the old members wound up with more eggs, mustard, and crazy foam on them than the new members. Many began begging parents for money to finance the New York trip, on which they all had a great time seeing Hello Dolly.' The Drama Guild also presented Sally and the Villian', which was a great hit with the students and faculty alike. Everyone chuckled as Jane Ceol sang off key (which was unusual for her), as Denny Kashurba ruthlessly tormented her, and Bill Corbett gallantly came to the rescue. 122 After Thanksgiving vacation we all settled back into the drudgery of school work as many seniors nervously awaited acceptance from colleges. December college board tests loomed ahead as the holiday fast approached. During these days the senior varsity P members, the band and the majorettes and cheerleaders received their senior jackets. What a shock and an insult when the athletes found 66 on their jackets. A phone coll to the company sent the 67's on their way. Happily the seniors were measured for caps and gowns. Just as excited were the juniors when they ordered their rings. The students all looked exceptionally nice on the Student Council's annual Dress-Up Day. On the last day of school before Christmas, the senior varsity P spent their time decorating the gym in red, white, and green and the girls helped create a Christmas fantasy. The rest of the students were entertained by a performance of the band and chorus and an excellent oration by Linda Wergin. Everyone went home with a full dose of Christmas spirit. The Christmas Ball climaxed the holiday season. The new year began with new resolutions, usually broken on January 2nd. Our basketball team was bringing recognition to our school as Don Hart and Rick Schropp kept making basket after basket. Because of great teamwork and under the great coaching of Mr. Kukich, Penn Joint finished second in our section. Meanwhile the wrestling team was equally making Penn Joint proud. Each of our boys were tough opponents for anyone, and no one could pin Tom Grant, Ray Giacomell, and Bill Matrisch. Mr. Morelli had a squad to be proud of. January was darkened by the death of o varsity football player and junior, Ed Drury. His loss was deeply grieved by the entire student body and faculty and will be remembered by his classmates for a long time. We also were shocked by the loss of one of our most dedicated teachers. Miss Ruth Peters, who taught senior English. We hope she is feeling better and we won't forget her vocabulary and Macbeth. 123 Midterms were Here in no time. Mrs. Byers was trying to teach us the laws of physics, but we were too dizzy to understand them at all. The seventh graders were making their first attempt at finals and by the look of semester grades, the result was good. The honor roll was too heavy with names — the way that it should be. The yearbook staff under the direction of editor, Linda Morgan, was working harder than ever to meet deadlines. Class parties were the social activities of the following months. The months rolled along and finally April and May were here. Mrs. Larson was going nuts with the May Day program while the prom committee was adding its final touches to that superb night which everyone will remember for years to come. To the strain of soft music and satin rustles, couples spent an enchanted evening at the Adams' House. The time was now here for the Seniors of '67. Practicing for graduation kept a lot of us out of class while Mrs. Byers tried to explain the difference between our left and right foot. The senior banquet and numerous other parties kept our calendars filled. Finally came Senior Day with all the awards and presentations. Everyone was waving goodbye as we rode past in our gaily decorated cars. Good-bye to another class, another year, the class of '67. We left a legacy — the memories of high school years, a legacy to be carried on by the future classes, on down the never-ending line. 124 The addition of the Brag Pages to the 1967 Penn Point is Penn Joint s way of recognizing senior students who have made outstanding achievements during their last year. They have worked hard and long for these accomplishments and represent our school as the best of the class of 67.
