The first few months of school were slow and quiet because we were strangers, but we soon became acquainted. Exams and the school picnic at Kenny-wood Park ended the first triumphant year. We parted to await the completing of the new high school. 't 0 ' Eighty-seven of us met the following year In the new Junior-senior high school as sophisticated Sophomores. This year proved more Interesting than the first. Shop and Home Economics departments were new additions. Latin was added to the curriculum for the academic students. We enjoyed a Halloween masquerade. In the fall. This semester closed our first successful year In the new high school building. When we returned as the sedate Juniors In the fall, the new auditorium, cafeteria, and gymnasium were completed. There were so many new problems to be faced, the following class officers were chosen to help us through this eventful year: Arthur Jacobs, Eugene Rogers, Celia Whitney, Peter Mochnlck. When the names of our members began to appear on the honor roll, we knew we were starting a successful year in Penn Township High School. We organized many new activities. The band was started, many new clubs were formed, and interclass basketball and soccer teams were organized. Our school provided a mimeograph machine which enabled us to have a newspaper. A staff was appointed and our first paper, The Blue and White Mirror, was edited. Our first attempt proved to be a great success. We gave a play entitled High Pressure Homer for the benefit of the library. Our class chose a ring, bearing the emblem of a Bushy Run scene and the William Penn slgnate. Then came our long-waited-for date, the Junior Prom. The second semester closed with the awarding of metals to the outstanding pupils of the Junior class. With great enthusiasm, we entered our last year and chose Arthur Jacobs, Paul Geiger, Celia Whitney, and Joseph Smith to lead us through this final tern. Our extra-curricular activities were Increased by the addition of the Dramatic Club, A Capella Chorus, Orchestra, and Science Club. To help finance the yearbook, the class gave a play Growing Pains. As the last semester drew to a close, the remaining 78 members of the class of 40 were busy preparing the work of our commencement activities scheduled as follows: March 29 Junior-Senior Dance May 26 Bacoalaureate May 1 Field Day May 27 Class Day May 10 Spring Concert May 29 Commencement May 17 Senior Class Play May 31 Picnic 7 ARTHUR JACOBS General Class President, 1-3-4, Interclass Volleyball 4, Band 3-4, Hl-Y Club 4. Of many great historic shrines are famous stories told, Yet more esteemed than any seems yon Bushy Run which we behold; No savage menace threatens us within our stately halls, Yet we revere the courage which that battle oft recalls. As stands yon great historic shrine, may we stand firm and tall; With courage and a zeal to learn, with labour that shall conquer all; And may our hearts where ere we roam forever loyal be To you----Penn Township High School which guides our destiny. 30 C korus President .......... Although outweighed approximately 25 pounds per man, our crack eleven resembled a charging brigade with an offensive drive that kept Norwln constantly against their goalposts. September 23 at Clarldge The largest crowd of the season was on hand to see Penn Townshljv make Its debut In the Class B ranks with an Impressive victory over a smaller but game Franklin eleven. October 7 at Jeannette Out to meet the strongest eleven of Western Pennsylvania, Penn Township managed to hold her own against a bigger and stronger opposing eleven. In accordance with the old saying, Credit Is given where credit Is due, we must give credit to our second string for starting a passing attack which netted our only score. R. Abraham and J Abraham scored for the Jays, while Martini scored for Penn Township. October 20 at Alverton Penn Township continued In the undefeated Class B rank with a victory over a big but less impressive East Huntingdon eleven. October 28 at Clarldge With a strong wind to their backs, Trafford stunned our boys with a touchdown, scored early In the game. In the midst of a blizzard, Penn Township recovered from this shock by scoring two touchdowns later In the game. November 4 at Derry Another Class B opponent and another victory! Penn Township's fighting grldmen tore Coach Bucol's Derry Ramblers to shreds with a vicious attack on a cold and windy Saturday. Joe Garvas starred by throwing 2 touchdown passes and running 52 yards for a touchdownUn-fortunately, Bosjnak, Penn Township fullback, was injured early In the game and was forced out for the rest of the season. November 11 at Clarldge Penn Township closed a successful season with an easy victory over Saltsburg. 43 VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM First Row: P. Mochnlck A Istanlsh, V. Kazlausky, G. Laplnsky, J. SPORTS REVIEW BASEBALL REVIEW Baseball, the favorite American pastime, was Introduced Into our school In the spring of 1939. Approximately 23 candidates reported to Coach Onder and training commenced Immediately. Although baseball Is not considered a major sport In other schools, It still retains Its popularity among the students and authorities of our high school. Our team completed the season with a reoord of two wins and two defeats. THE ATHLETIC HONOR ROLL Several of Penn Township's athletes were placed on the annual ALL WESTMORELAND COUNTY CLASS B football and basketball teama Edward Barblsh was plaoed on the first team tackle position and Joe Garvas received a second team halfback post. Albert Llchy, Glenn Jones, and Frank Bosnjak received honorable mention. In basketball, Victor Kazlausky was placed on the second team guard position and Robert Watt was placed on the honorable mention list. BASKETBALL REVIEW Despite the fact that the Varsity Basketball team was a losing team, they received the whole-hearted support of the student body. Their efforts In teamwork were noticeable. Their consistent losing was probably due to laok of experience. BASKETBALL REVIEW VARSITY'S SEASON RECORD JR. There was no trouble picking the twelfth grade mixed team as champions, because they showed so much athletic ability. Now we leave the Juniors and Sophomores. No doubt they will someday be our school champions. TRACK Although track is an old sport, it is one of the newest in our school. So far, this activity has been limited to intercla8B sports. GIRLS' CHAMPION TEAM OF 1940 The ninth grade girls' basketball team of Penn Township High School this year proved to be the best we ever had. Too much’cannot be said In praise of their delightful showing of team work and cooperation. Mildred Lauffer was elected captain and, through her leadership and the coaching of Miss McIntosh and Mr. Onder, a fast and efficient team was developed. Lineup: Elizabeth Greer, forward, was always around when some additional points were needed. Mildred Lauffer, center, needs to be complimented on her unusual ability to hit the basket. Elsie Ross, forward, played well and displayed her ability with clever shooting of fouls. Anna Mochnlck, guard, liked arguing with the referee, but always got the ball. Hilda Deguffroy, guard, played a smooth, fast, and hard passing game. Anna Kolleda, guard, kept many a ball from the enemy's basket. The subs deserve great praise for their cooperation. The girls played seven games, won six and lost one, which gave them the championship of 1940. GIRLS' CHAMPION TEAM OF 1939 Left to right: A. Duncan, R. Koter, H. Ferguson, G. Stoss, M. Pervornick, I.
