You began the 1955- 1956 school term with home room assignments, new teachers, and general class activities. You were the spectators at the crowded pep meetings and color- ful football games. Your classes selected your kings and queens before Thanks- giving. After the holiday season you attended the basketball games, the senior class play, Time Out For Ginger, and that glorious Deb-Sub Deb formal. Mid-term exams made you sad. Next Sadie Hawkins Day, the riotous drama competition, and the junior class play gave you additional happiness. The moment you had to part from your friends dawned. May you often pore through the pages of the 1956 Seneca to recall your life in the halls of Penn. tlt-coi':itioiis for Room 211 fV17l1'j', Dick, Betty, Lucille-glzid to be outdoors 5, ff f ff Q , , To our vapahlv history tvavhmy Mr, Thom- ' b as A. We attributed the success- ful program of our township's schools to his untiring efforts. He displayed sound judgment, sincerity, integrity, and loyalty to the highest professional ideals. He has his M.A., and Dr. Ed., degrees from the University of Pitts- burgh. Let us introduce you to our assistant superintendent, Mr. Hoelzle. His serv- ice to children, youth, and teachers cannot be measured. His suggestions or ideas given here or there were carried out by others. He served you with dig- ity and courage. Sloan BOARD OF EDUCATION Our township school board is com- posed of citizens working diligently to improve our school system. They have gone through many trials and tribula- tions, coping with the ever-present problem of increasing population in the township. They have been a part of our life since first grade, deciding the school policies. Under these policies they pro- vide for guidance and counseling, and learning related to civic, economic, and family duties in later life. They pro- mote the erection of new school build- ings-most recent of which is the new high school. Also they select teachers with great care, grant contracts for school supplies and equipment, select the writing system, supervise the junior high core system, and choose the new- est and best textbooks for our use. Indeed, we should be proud of the school board who plays such an im- portant role in our daily lives. OFFICE STAFF - Brunton A Goldncr Mc-Clinton - Pe-t1'ick - Miller administration DR. JOSEPH E. Someone has said, Man is Wealthy not in proportion to the things he can acquire, but in proportion to what he can give away. We noted that Dr. Wherry added much to the character of school administration by his ideals and his faith in you. Mr. Alcorn excelled in the field of counseling by giving you encourage- ment and sound advice about personal and school matters. He will continue to live in the many lives he has suc- cessfully iniiuenced. We thought of Dr. Kelley as a man with many talents. Many times his bril- liant Writings, his effective speeches, and his sincere friendship inspired all of us. Yes, these men held the key to our lives. Each had his role to play. There the editors and spon- sors, Miss Stoehr and Mr. Peebles, en- deavored to produce for you a yearbook which the student body would accept as the best ever. The staff consisted of seniors and juniors, divided into seven groups-art, publicity, features, busi- ness, sports, photography and typing. Presiding over the various departments is the editor who made everyone see his duty and carry out the responsibil- ity in planning and producing the book. So here is your 1956 Seneca. The group attempted to reproduce pictorially for you all the moments to remember - the class room scenes, your best friends at dances, the fun-loving students in the corridors, your rush to catch a bus, the carefree, happy antics at pep meet- ings, and the excitement at sports events. The editors give the assign- ments to the reporters, who scout around school in search of the news. The articles are given to the respective page editors and further proof-read be- fore going to the printer. Mr. Walter McLeister, the sponsor, is always on hand to give his suggestions and advice to help get the facts to the students. Penn Points has done much to promote the many school activities through free advertising. Then, too, members of the staff attend publications conferences in the spring and fall to discuss the me- chanics of newspaper reporting. Besides publishing approximately twelve issues a year, they sponsor the annual Coronation Dance where the king and queen of each class is crowned. The officers-Bob Irvin, Arlene Budd, Arlene Starkey, Dorothy Powell some one has said that the most precious thing in life is honor. The goal of serious-minded students was to have membership in the National Honor Society whose four cardinal principles are character, scholarship, leadership and service. In order to be eligible for membership a student had to maintain a B average in his academic subjects. Candidates were chosen by the faculty and a committee and were invited to join the club at the end of the junior year, at the beginning of the senior year and at mid-term of the senior year. The society offered one scholar- ship annually to a Worthy senior Who was interested in attending college. The National Honor Society had several money-raising projects for their schol- arship fund such as sponsoring a show and dance. They also sold candy and cookies at Penn's cvening programs. Shirley has tin- fusvimitiiig task of clisinging lilmrary bulletin boards. librarians They advocated that books are tools. The library assistants played an im- portant part each day in the activities of Penn High. The library has sixty- live magazines, three newspapers, and live thousand two hundred volumes. For this reason it would be impossible to operate without student help. The assistants supervised the extensive cir- culation of books. They also processed all new books - stamped, embossed, mended, opened, and shellacked them. Then, too, they checked and dusted shelves. They got from the stacks It CIOXL-SENIOR LIBRARY ASSISTANTS numerous magazines for students. Also attractive bulletin boards depicting books for various seasons and impres- sive displays of new books were set up by this group. STUDENT COUNCIL Student Council, the governing body of Penn consists of forty-six students- fourteen of whom are elected by the student body and thirty-two members represent the various homerooms. It is truly a citizenship laboratory Where the members serve as pupil- teacher-administration committees in making decisions that pertain to the various student activities. The council fosters leadership and fellowship train- ing among the students and strives to develop a sense of self-direction among pupils. An outstanding objective is the molding of desirable student opinion on matters that require such opinion. They strive to promote good pupil-teacher relations. Its active contributions are to aid in making decisions in various school policies, to provide student lead- ership at school assemblies, to Hnance and decide the type of assembly pro- grams, to charter all clubs, to prepare the Student Handbook, to manage the refreshment stand at football games, to evaluate various student programs, to supervise the sophomore orientation program, to donate financially toward school projects, to provide student rep- resentation for various community or- ganizations and to issue guest cards for social affairs. The officers-Carol, Ed. Sandy, and Nancy did 11 splendid job. Qff-mmm. V clubs They Will build a stronger nation. Miss Massarelli and Arlene with the burro which had a part in the Spanish pinata. I M's' Rupe 't's -lass tl frls learned to Clubs are the life of any school. The importance of your forty clubs and organizations cannot be over-estimated because of the qualities which they instill in the members. Clubs give you an opportunity to govern yourselves and to help your school and commu- nity. Several outstanding service proj- ects have been performed during the year. The Future Homemakers of America have given hospital donations, the Variety Club has supplied talent to community groups, the Hi-Y has col- lected old clothing for the Goodwill Industry and canned goods for the needy, and the Cue and Curtain has brought entertainment to the youth of our community. In addition to these to coordinate the clubs, you have the Presidents' Club made up of the presi- dent of each school organization. They also take care of the activities awards given to those students who earn enough points for their participation in extra-curricular activities. n Lb 1 , r .ii .ie Sl , , be perfect guests oi' hostesses. Cue and Curtain, sponsored by Mrs. Dunham, gave dramatic experience to its members. This year members pre- sented a one-act play in assembly, sponsored the drama competition, and entered the state Forensic One-Act Play Contest. Also Diane McCay's original and heart-warming play, The Night Before Christmas was presented suc- cessfully in the Hebron Elementary Grade School. The purpose of the Rostrum Club was to encourage public speaking. Led by Mrs. Beadling, the members selected students who enjoyed debating. They attended Student Congress and the Speech Tourney where members could enter extemporaneous speaking and declamations-dramatic, oratorical and humorous. The club is a member of the National Forensic League. Under the guidance of Mr. Groer, the Penn Art Club brought together inter- ested students to further their knowl- edge and appreciation of art. They entered the Scholastic contest, visited art exhibits and produced many eye- catching posters for school and com- munity activities. Estelle Murray showed Brenda one of her dance steps. They provided school spirit The Commercial Club members are seniors who take the commercial course. Sponsored by Mrs. Naser, this group is highly praised and respected for its excellent service. Besides serving as secretaries to the teachers, they made the programs and booklets for all school affairs. The Booster Club, guided by Mr. Mewhirter, activated school spirit. The members created interest in all school activities and encouraged attendance at all ball games. They provided bus trans- portation for loyal and enthusiastic persons to and from games. Any one could join this group. Home room rep- resentatives, however, are the spokes in this great Wheel of activity. Without the Projection Club life at Penn would lose some of its sparkle. Under the capable leadership of Miss Pierce, students master the intricacies of threading movie projectors, loading cameras, or setting up other equipment for the visual aids program. In OHM-fl Practice class girls learned to be self-supporting. Lvft to right: Maggie Dixon, Edna Heckert, Judy D'Ambrosio, Marie Hasson, Carol Mr,-hold, Barbara Spears and Patricia Stoops. I ,V : WA music Y Mr. Fred Willi:1liis The day would have been incomplete Without a song or Without band music. As band or chorus members, students had a delightful way to use their energy to the utmost. Music gave an inner satisfac- tion and provided enjoyment to the musician as Well as to the listener. The Christmas assembl and the Spring Music Festival with Mrs. Mac illan directing, displayed the Wonderful talent of the choral groups. Gordon Carpenter aided as student director. The dance band served at many club dances. The band, too, played an important part in our lives. At assemblies those extra selections they played thrilled us While their magnificent performance at football games helped to enliven our hopes and spirit. When you glance at some of these pictures of the team, think of some of the things they had to endure. First there were the long hours of practice. Long after you were safely at home relaxing, the boys were still on the field in training-exercising, run- ning, perspiring, learning, scrimmaging. Then came the football battle. Their aim was to win. Did you always give them credit for their courage and de- termination? They didn't always win. There were losses too. The lessons learned on the gridiron will be of great value to them throughout life. This philosophy was expressed many times by Coach Fisher at pep meetings. Also many of the boys on the team voiced their appreciation to the student body for their excellent school spirit. Yes, this is the trend our life should assume here during the football season. BASKETBALL The Varsity Basketeers for Penn this year started the season off with a bang but found the door of opportunity sud- denly closed to them. As the final game ended, the record stood at seven wins and Hfteen losses. Mr. Munson's charges opened the season winning five out of seven exhi- bition games. A streak of bad hit, as the team was unable to overpower Swissvale, Rankin, Wilmerding, Scott, Braddock, Wilkinsburg, Turtle Creek, and Clairton. Two wins and five losses later the season came to a close. The Jayvees, coached by Mr. Me- whirter battled their Way to a 13-7 record.
