We editors liked this saying so much that we have called the theme of the yearbook Teen-Age Tales. Depicted throughout these pages you will find your story of the current year. You will see the stu- dents and teachers at work and at play. We hope all of the happy events in which you, the student body parti- cipated, have been faithfully told in the 1955 Seneca. HOICLZLE Asxislfznf Szlgfwiizfwzflezzf .xdclminafrafion . . . Many times we teenagers took the men in the administrative field for granted. We, however, point with pride to five efficient men who head our school. First is Dr. John H. Linton, the superintendent of schools. Since January 1947, he has met many chal- lenging school problems and has proved his ability to solve them. The assistant superintendent, Mr. Norman F. Hoelzle, supervised the program of the elementary school system. This year he took on a new responsibility-to supervise the maintenance department in the township. Dr. Arthur C. Kelley, former principal of Penn Junior High, served as Director of Secondary Education. The purpose of his work was to coordinate the program of the junior and senior high schools. Two capable persons in charge of the high school are Dr. Joseph E. Wherry, prin- cipal, and Mr. Matthew M. Alcorn, the assist- ant principal. Each one looked after the conduct and welfare of students whom they advised and directed to the major task of having a fuller and finer life. DR. ARTHUR C. BOARD OF EDUCATION A salute is due another group of men chosen to serve this community. They have spent considerable time and energy working out and directing school policies. These citizens with their combined talents have given us greater educational opportunities and more modern facilities. We extend our sin- cere gratitude to the Board of Educa- tion for doing an excellent job. Then, too, We wish to pay tribute to the memory of Mr. Edward B. Messen- ger who passed away suddenly before the 1954-1955 term began. We know that the township has lost a very valu- able friend and leader in the educational field. Mr. Messenger served on the Board of Education for twelve years from 1943 to 1954 respectively, taking his turn in office as president, secretary and treasurer. The faculty, as Well as the student body, revere his memory and mourn his untimely passing. 'N J A-an Ak IN BIEMOIIIAM NIR. The Pennsylvania School Health Program is intended to assist in building sound minds and healthy bodies for the youth of Penn- sylvania. Since a vigorous body and a well- balanced mind is essential to the welfare of a boy or girl and to our nation, Penn has made provision for periodic medical and dental examinations. A healthy body pro- tected from disease is the goal of our medical staff: therefore Penn Townships Health De- partment has published for its patrons book- lets, one of which, called A Manual of School Health Policies and Childhood Dis- eases, gives valuable information concern- ing many childrens diseases. We are happy to have a good group of medics in our school system. Nlr. Gollll-in :mil Mr. lb-ally. llwnys rl-:11l5' lu guido yilllll. Kissirk :mul Alfre-el Ang-'Io. Led by excep- tionally capable leaders, the juniors honored Judy Armbruster and Gerry Rauso as the king and queen of their class. Their play, Meet Me In St. Louis, , given April 29, 1955, showed the student body and patrons what a fine crowd of troupers can do. These resourceful middlers displayed skill and ingenuity in everything they under- took. This class showed promise of be- ing a truly unified group and should prove that it will accomplish much. STRIVIN Junior Board First Row: Kline, White, Serenca, Coss, Mehold, Dayen. Second Row: Hines, De- Vito, Hewitt, Frey, Hum- phreys. Third Row: Tauro, Rauso Pomi, Zaspel, Mr. Evans Hershey, Miss Massarellif Sophomore Board First Row: Christman Robinson, Barber, Ken- ney. Second Row: Mrs. Keller McKim, McCarrick, Dc- Villing, Hobe, Connell Longwell, Mr. Mousseau The Class of 1957 Officers President- - -Richard Hobe Vice President--Brinton DeVilling Sem'etuJ'y---Joanne Brehm TI'PllSllfl'F1'- Tom Longwell Entering the halls of Penn for the first time, the Class of 1957 told a story of new experiences. No longer consid- ered leaders in a school, they had to make adjustments. But opportunities to join clubs, to participate in pep meet- ings, and to make new friends gave them more confidence as time went on. Proud that their class is the largest one in school, they chose excellent offi- cers. Jane McKinley and Tom Longwell was their choice as queen and king. They are destined to become a great class. The object of the staff was to pro- duce a yearbook that would please everyone. The people on the staff knew it would take much work and time. They also knew that this was a job with a great responsibility because their small group represented the whole stu- dent body. In order to produce a good year- book the staff had to stay after school many days. The jobs they did included write-ups of seniors, faculty, and clubs: -Q.. collecting money for subscriptions: recording the sale of subscriptions in each homeroom, selecting the color. dedication, and theme of the yearbook. The job of selecting a theme was one of the bigger jobs. The theme selected this year was TEEN-AGE TALES. In the end everyone enjoyed the jobs and responsibility because they got to know many people. When assignments were given to the members, they spent considerable time on the assigned article. Then the page editor took over and did the proof reading. The editors approved the articles which were sent to the typists. Finally the page editors re-read the typed COPY, and made the final corrections, and sent it to the printer. Before long Penn's teen-agers, together with their friends and neigh- bors, read the news with great enjoy- ment. Besides going through this routine every month, Mr. McLeister's staff also published special holiday issues, the Junior and Senior Class play issues, and the Senior Class issue. This busy staff also sponsored the annual Corona- tion Dance. This was truly a very valu- able school organization. hwlly, If-:viii In 1 In xx I EWS OF YOUR LIFE AT PENN ON RECORD TIME l'Xl'II :I I II1 I In Ii IEiClllLZCl!UOIl5 DEVEL X lk OP RESOUR CEFULNESS and RESPO NSIBILITY jf' I I n Shields assisted Arlene in lighting the candles before th' initiation rw-ivnioiiy began. The primary purpose of this group was to bring together sophomores, juniors and seniors interested in art. The club wanted to give students a better background in the use of such media as charcoal, water color, oil paints, tempera paint and india ink. The students received further experience in art by doing all school posters, sponsoring an art show, working on community projects, and entering their best work in the Scholas- tic competition. In addition to promoting club activities Mr. Groer worked with a crafts class which also contributed to Schol- astic. They worked with silver, dabbled in ceramics, did enameling on copper and became prohcient in leather tooling. Huh 'l'u5'l-ir :mil Init-mls uwfi'k wliliuviilly with :i 1 lllllll pm-1.-vt, Ross. To create that con- tagion of spirit unified the student body and developed pride and loyalty to the school. This intangible something made the student a better school citizen. What better goal could a club have? Yes, a good school citi- zen today becomes the fine civic-minded citizen of tomorrow. 0 4X.,,.a ,N . . N . O O . Q l I .. 3 u F. K0 . . . fi V. F ,.-Q . , . O . THE BAND -- THE ORCHESTRA - THE CHORUS When we thought of the crimson and gold Penn High Band, to our mind came various things-their unique for- mations, the Glenn Miller, Time, Memories, and Show Businessg their snappy marching technique, their mo- rale building at pep meetingsg their Jazz and Spring concertsg their trips to Forbes Field and Carnegie Music Hall. The students in this organization had fun but they also worked hard. Their chief aim was to please their friend and director, Mr. H. Fred Williams, although they knew about the weekly practices in the hot, summer sun and the marching formations on frosty mornings in the fall. The student direc- tor was Gerry Rauso. The persons who liked the more seri- ous and mellow type of music joined the orchestra. Here they developed a sensitive ear for tones, quick emotional reactions, and a sense of rhythm. This year this group entertained the All District Orchestra whose excellent pro- gram showed the public what musically- minded young people can accomplish. Also musicians for the regional Penn- sylvania Music and Forensic League were here. A few ambitious members such as Pat Shapoe played the cello in the Pittsburgh Junior Symphony and Gerry Rauso, the French horn in the All State Orchestra. Student Don Shields assisted Mr. Williams. The chor'us, with Mrs. Mary Maur- hoff directing, also played a big role in our school. It gave many students a chance to develop their vocal talent. At each assembly or the special ones, Christmas and Easter, individuals as well as the entire group delighted the audience with their sacred and secular numbers. At the Spring Concert, too, the chorus performed superbly. Bob Armbruster and Sally Fisher were the assistants in directing. All three of Penn's musical organizations deserved great commendation. Mr. 311-wliirter, Mr. Mf-Giiilf-y, The 1954 football team has just completed one of the most successful seasons in the his- tory of our school. Mr. Fisher again was the head coach and he was assisted by Mr. lflliick- er, Mr. VValters, Mr. McGinley and Mr. Mewhirter. Penn began their season tremendously by successfully defeating West View 27-T, Tur- tle Creek 31-0 and Latrobe 26-O. We then travelled to Mt, Lebanon having high hopes of taking our fourth victory, but they proved too much for us and handed us a 40-14 de- feat. Our spirited team was not disillusioned by this, however, and went on to defeat Shaler 18-2 and Vandergrift 25-O. In the next game with Washington, however, we were defeated by the slim margin of one point. This game was a heart-breaker for us since the Kun sounded in the last quarter with Penn possess- ing the ball on Washington's one yard line. The score was 120-19. After that, Penn easily defeated Brentwood 21-0. In the tinal game of the season, Penn suffered a 12-6 loss at the hands of our arch rivals, VVilkinsburg. Penn completed this successful season with six wins and three losses. The team must be complimented on their fine work. l l l .IVNIOH VARSITY ' First Rout' Coavh Pllirkf-l'. Ti--ty.
