The Board of Education, a group of exceptionally capable men, is entrusted with all educational projects. They bring to our vicinity the best teachers rather than the mediocre, and also provide modern school buildings. They are interested in all our numerous activities. As a student body we, too, have certain measurements to attain. Do we always measure up to the high stand- ards set for us? Do we make use of all facilities and opportunities provided? Do we understand others. and how do we cooperate with them? Have we acquired wholesome attitudes? Have we respect for law and order? Each individual should leave this school with a good scholastic record and with splen- did social and spiritual values of life. X U Sc'z'rcfari,c's - Mrs. Mr'Clinf0n, Mrs. Brunton Mrs. Pvtrick and Miss Galligan We should prove to the me11. who work untiringly and unceasingly for us, that we are really appreciative of their efforts. The personality who heads our ex- panding educational system is Dr. John H. Linton, who has a great and chal- lenging responsibility. In complete charge of the operation of the town- ships schools, we students admire Mr. Linton for his resourcefulness, his busi- ness ability, for his spirit of friendli- ness, and his sense of humor. Mr. Norman F. Hoelzle assists in the management of our schools. He, too. has varied tasks. Chiefly concerned with the elementary schools, Mr. Hoelzle also makes periodic visits to the junior high and senior high classrooms to observe the progress made by the stu- dents and teachers during a semester. ,,,Ci'l'izen...Leader...Friend DR. ALCORN Assistant Principal Daily or periodically we hear these familiar words coming over the public address system: We have a special announcement , Take it away audi- torium g May I have your attention please? That's all, thank you . The announcements are voiced by Dr. Jo- seph Wherry, a well-qualified person, administering the affairs of our school. Many pressing and important problems constantly arising because of increased membership, he solves admirably. Like the prophet of yesterday, Dr. Wherry, too, lays the foundations of tomorrow by his faith in youth. One who leads the way toward better attitudes, more gracious m a n n e r s, worthier tastes, and higher values is Mr. Matthew Alcorn. He deals with at- tendance problems too. His frequent interviews with students, teachers, and parents require constant alertness and tactfulness as he paves the way to a better understanding and a more har- monious relationship between various individuals who come to him for coun- selling. A friend to all, he seeks to guide youth into a happier way of liv- mg. Now upper classmen, the Juniors are three-fourths of the way to attaining their goal. It has been an exciting year. They received their class rings which they proudly display. The class honored their king, Eugene Valentini, and queen, Phyllis Town, at the Royalty dance. The Mistletoe Hop to which guests were invited, December 22, 1953, certainly showed their ability to work together as a group. Their play proved to be entertaining and also was financially successful. A desire to be on top made them work hard in everthing they undertook. The juniors who are on Penn Points, Student Council and other staffs will be prepared to take the top jobs when they enter school next fall. But with their ability to cooperate, they will all do a good job. For many of the students of thc Sophomore class, this was their first year at Penn High. They were put to the task of learning all the cheers which would add success to our pep meetings. Through their willingness to learn they overcame the many burdens which faced them. With their class officers leading them, they look forward to becoming upperclassmen. Although the club activity of the sophomore is limit- ed, they have done well with what few clubs they have. Their interests center around the Variety Club, G.A.A., and Y-Teens. Then through the help of the sophomore girls our library is managed successfully. They chose as their queen a lovely majorette, Nancy Kress, and as their king, Don Hewitt. To edit the book meant staying after school day after day in order to meet deadlines. The numerous jobs included writing and revising faculty, student and club write-ups: planning, photo- graphing and identifying hundreds of pictures: measuring the exact number of words set up in the dummy 3 mak- ing many business telephone calls col lecting money from subscribers and recording each home rooms subsciip tions But each staff member gained per- sonal pleasure and satisfaction from his efforts. First, each one learned he had to be emotionally mature to meet any or all problems which occur- red from time to time. He learned to work well with others. Few people realize the time and effort necessary to produce a school paper. First, assignments are posted and every staff member gets busy on his own spe- cial job. These articles have to be proof- read and then sent to the editors. After the editors have given their approval they are sent to the typists. They return the typed copy to the page editors who re-read the articles. Finally, after all corrections are made, they are sent to the printer. After the staff reads the galley sheets the printer returns the final edition. After finally getting a satisfactory issue the staff has to start all over again on the next issue. The staff tries each month to bring to its critical read- ers the social and club news of the school. Mr. McLeistcr, acts as sponsor for this group. The extra curricular activities at Penn High School are steadily increas- ing. Four new activities have been organized: the Boosters, Penn Provid- ers, Biology, and Math Club. Added to our other enjoyments of Penn High life these new clubs will promote inter- ests in the community as well as the school. The purpose of the Booster Club is to promote school spirit, not only during the periods of seasonal sports but also for all activities which occur during the school year. The Penn Pro- viders, organized by Mr. Edward Ever- ett and his American history classes, had the primary purpose of collecting clothes. toys, and games for the various children's homes throughout the dis- trict. The Biology Club is an organiza- tion of students who possess the love of outdoors and who have a true inter- est in nature. Their various trips, under the guidance of Mr. Raymond Evans, have given them a chance to commune with and study about nature. The Math Club, a group of students with a com- mon interest in mathematics, meets to work out interesting problems. We of the Seneca staff welcome these four new clubs to the Penn High roster and hope that they, along with various other clubs, will continue to educate and instruct the students. The comedy, Ladies of the Jury, presented by the Senior Class, was a very enjoyable event. This play was attended by the largest crowd that Penn High has seen at plays in the last ten years. The plot of it concerned a Broad- way show girl who was accused of murdering her husband. In the jury room it evolves that the only jury member believing her innocent was Mrs. Crane, a wealthy society woman. Most of the play dealt with Mrs. Crane's efforts to change the votes of the others on the jury. By using her cleverness, she is able to get all but Mr. Pressley, fthe foreman of the jury, and Lily Pratt a prim spinster, to vote not guilty. After much wrangling these two stub- 'born individuals change their vote and the verdict of acquittal comes on ballot one hundred and twenty-four. v I Norma and Ginger assisted Mrs. Powers in dirccting the play 4-IU Bring in thc food. JUNI CLA OR SS PLAY Delighfed fhe crowd with fheir wif. Here Comes Charlie was the farce comedy presented by 1953's Junior Class. The Main character is Charlie Hopps, a 17-year-old hillbilly who after her father's death went with Uncle Aleck Twiggs to St. Louis to live with the supposedly wealthy Farnham family. Because of her poor manners and coun- try ways Charlie is not happily received by Mrs. Farnham, but that doesn't matter to Charlie. Mrs. Farnham puts Uncle Aleck to work as a butler and then the fun begins. Charlie has three boys chasing her and in the end she turns out to be quite a girl. He was ably assisted by Mr. McGinley, Mr. Schmidt- ke, Mr. Elicker, and Mr. Walters. This year the team's spirit and the school's spirit was at an all time high. The Indians bumped into some mighty rough breaks, and six defeats, but a more spirited team would have been hard to find. It took Penn two games, one with West View and one with Turtle Creek, before getting into the winning col- umn. In their third game we found Penn settling down to business and earning their Hrst win of the season. On October 2, Penn dealt to Mt. Lebanon the first blemish in their four Coaches: Walters, Evans, Fisher, Schmidtkc To all fans, old and young win record by holding them to a tie and on October 9, Penn earned a second victory by defeating Shaler. The Vandergrift Lancers and Wash- ington High ruled over Penn in her next two games and on October 30, a shiver- ing crowd at Penn watched Butler also take the ruling hand. Friday, October 13, proved to be against Penn but a lucky day for Wilk- insburg. Penn's crippled team was no match for the Holy City eleven who wanted revenge for their loss to Penn last year. Goin's passing arm and Beacon's run- ning were the strongest threat to Penn's opponents along with Gardone's offen- sive playing and Ziegler's and Stricken- gloss' defensive playing. BASKETBALL Good luck and bah Pcnn High's basketeers were coached this year by Mr. Munson. Fortune failed to join Penn during the season and the team ended its League competition with three wins and ten losses. The boys played in Section 7-A which is one of the toughest sections in the W.P.I.A.L. The Indians won one and lost one with Swissvale, Wilmerding and North Braddock. Two close games proved to be heartbreakers for Penn when Wil- kinsburg beat us by one point and Turtle Creek beat us by two. Wilson Went to the top of Penn's scorers with 316 points while Goin fol- lowed close by with 202. Kunde and Moseley broke into the 100 bracket by getting 145 and 134 points respectively. The spring game which fhrllls all Penn had a successful season under the able guidance of Mr. William Mun- son. We started off the season by defeating Scott. Braddock trumped us in a close game but our not-to-be dis- couraged team fought hard and won the next three games, defeating Swiss- vale, Scott, and Braddock. Turtle Creek spoiled our record twice but Penn came back in to the winning column again by beating Swissvale. In our games with Wilkinsburg we won one game and lost one. Despite the Turtle Creek setback, Penn has had a good season this year. Ted Nelson and Stewart Bruce have done a good job in the pitcher's box. Ted copping four and Bruce two wins for the home team. Each week these girls participate in some sport such as field hockey, basketball, volleyball, soft- ball, and swimming - each in its own season. Aims of the G.A.A., are to train girls to referee and take charge of groups in :1 dignified manner and to develop poise, self control, initiative. and responsibility. Also the association endeavors to inspire its girls to attain a high physical, mental, and social ideal. The G.A.A., sponsors the annual Soc Hop Dance, an assembly for the school, the girls' intramural basket- ball tournament, and a community project.
