The stars of this production are you -the students of Penn Senior High. The directors and prompters are our teachers. They are most helpful and very friendly. The plays in which you participate are of a great variety. They include sports, clubs, and classes. The favorite play of the majority of the students is learning. There are a few who do not learn their lines and are dropped from the cast but a greater number succeed. The result is all the wonderful student pro- duced and student sponsored productions. We, of the Seneca staff give you a pictorial review of these events and activities. 0 Administration I CCWlf111iSsS'c6'cS' 0 Alcfivifiles 0 Alilvzletics I ,l, 'ff 1 1 E 'X -Q., w ' -+- dmzimzzi' tration Q. There is always a reason for the ease with which a suceessful pe1'fo1'1nance progresses, First. one Ends behind the scenes an alert person- ality-a hard worker' called the produc-ei: In such a role one might plave Miz John H, Linton, Penn's superintendent. He makes our schools and its program a hit produv- tion with a star cast of almost two hundred individuals aiding him. Thus the children of' our township are given the best oppor- tunity to learn to be the finest pe1'foi'ine1's as citizens of this great vountry, if they so wish. The Senior Class of 1953 has been aware of the great task our board of school direc- tors have in managing the township's educational activities, This year's group is to be commended for the proncient manner in which they met and solved their many problems. MR. HOELZLE Another individual whose personality is projected mightily in the production of a play, is the assistant director. His task is to look for improvement in script and action. Needless to say, in our school system Mr. Norman F, Hoelzle. our assistant super- v1so1'. ills this hill. He constantly watches for improvement in management, in im- proved teaching and recitation. and in recommending practical materials. In addi- tion to this, he builds up good will and bet- ter understanding between all the players -students, teachers, parents, and adminis- trators. Such an assignment isn't always an easy task. Our class, however. notes that Mr. Hoelzle has done his work con- fscientiously and well. 's. Pvtrick lnoii in--ml-irri. Mrs. Mars--llc lluulics- MR. NORMAN F. HOELZLE Assistant Suprtrintcmlcm' rviinzeipeizfls.. . ., DR. JOSEPH E. WHERRY A director's job includes knowing and understanding the prompters and cast. Dr. Wherry. the director, has many important duties too. He spends much of his time in advising and helping with the production. He supervises special meetings, plans our assemblies to help us grow mentally and spiritually, and solves many educational problems. Without his patience, his end- less energy, and his reassuring faith in us, our class could not have attained surcess in its projects this year. MR MATTHEW M. ALCORN Assistant Prinr'ipf1I DR. JOSEPH E. WHERRY High Sehool Principal MR. MATTHEW M. ALCORN The assistant director producing a play is also exceedingly important. In our school Mr, Matthew Alcorn holds this position and really does a good job. His duties are many and varied with each day bringing new problems and ideas. We cer- tainly are gifted with a good man for this position as counsellor. Mr. Alcorn very helpfully discusses and settles our prob- lems, Student Council, our student gov- erning body, is ably sponsored by Mr. Alcorn. As sophomores we pledged to stick together, electing Stanley Caldarelli and Gail Mandy, king and queen. ln the next scene as juniors we worked hard to make the class play, dance, and re- ception a success. Tom Cox and Betty Lou Fassinger reigned as king and queen. As seniors we showed some ability after all by selling S9500 worth of magazines and giving an acceptable performance of 'Junior Mister. Ruth Werder and Bill Weirauch be- came king and queen. Thus the final scenes closed with a star performance. We are sure that they abound in quality besides quantity. Their leading lady was Jan Blankenbeker who led her class through a top-rate year. The sophomores really added glamor and good looks to Coronation night with their deserving king, Lefty Hump- reys and queen, Barbie Peters. So ends a well-spent year. l Y. i Jaunty Juniors Class of 1954 Act I This class has played a starring role since they entered Penn High. As soph- omores they had top billing the glorious evening of their dance. The curtain fell all too soon on the first successful act. Act 11 the curtain rises on a cast confident of another successful year. President Butch Iliff had the leading' role for the second time and he played his part well. Christmas brought their colorful dance. Act II ended with a grand junior- senior reception. SOPIIUINIOHE BOARD First Roux' SlI'if'lc1-xigloss, Bosuivk. Goin. Blarikwzzlff-k--1'. 'l':fwii. Our captain, Miss Marie Stoehr, bravely led the staff through its worst storms. However, the senior class, a lighthouse warding the ship from broken rocks of discouragement, showed their faith in the staff with their magnificent maga- zine sale and helped guide the ship to safety. All news is reviewed, thanks to Penn Points, in the manner of a great play on opening night. The student body is frankly told of details and opinions from all sides of an event. Then, too, PENN POINTS the paper has plenty of eye-appeal with its good photographs and appro- priate sketches. Editing Penn Points is a never ending job for Mr. McLeister and his staff. No sooner has one issue of the paper rolled off the presses and placed into eager hands of students than assignments are posted for the next issue. You always can find stu- dents rushing from one meeting to another trying to add their bit to the discussions. Here are a few of the clubs and their aims. The National Honor Society represents the four cardinal principles of character. scholarship. leadership, and service. Its aim is to hold these ideals before the student body as a goal toward which all should strive. Commercial Club aims at teach- ing commercial students more about business procedure and furnishing a secretary for each teacher. Future Home-makers of America trains its members for future home making. Var- iety Club reveals the hidden talents of CF CLUBS many of the Penn High students by giv- ing them a chance to entertain. Cue and Curtain, a dramatic club, aims to teach its members poise, self-confidence. and dramatic techniques. Rostrum Club. a debating club, is chiefly interested in developing speaking ability in its mem- bers. Presidents' Club discusses prob- lems concerning orderly meetings. Hall Patrol keeps the traffic moving in the halls and on the stairs. It also sells re- freshments at the basketball games. Debs aids each member in obtaining charm. poise, and a pleasing personal- ity. Future Teachers of America aims to teach its members to prepare for the teaching profession by doing student teaching and by visiting at least two colleges a year. The lively music and spir- ited players have made us realize that music is one of the arts which offers great satisfaction. When the band played for the games, school spirit soared high, and the tricky, appropriate band formations made everyone proud of his school. Assemblies have been brightened by gay, seasonal instrumen- tations, in addition to band concerts which displayed individual and group talent, as well as excellent directing. You can be sure Mr. Williams is mighty proud of the Penn High band. which took a great deal of his planning, pa- tience and persistence, so the players would meet the rigid standards of per- fection, from the tiniest piccolo to the mighty bass. Huber, All'fNllllt', THE ORCHESTRA Musically inclined students who wish to play the more serious, sweet and mellow type of music join the orches- tra, and may belong to the band or chorus also. An orchestra is supposed to consist of a multitude of stringed instruments, which give the gay. airy, rippling effects in compositions, plus all the various instruments contained in a band. Although the orchestra lacked complete instrumentation, they did remarkably well for a small troup and entertained for our assemblies and plays. Each year the Penn High orches- tra sends some of its members to dist- trict orchestra where they rehearse with musicians from all parts of west- ern Pennsylvania for several days. This year we were fortunate to have the following students represent our school: Shirley Baker. Charles Bowman, Mar- garet Foster, Bill Green, Richard Hay- den. Don Hinderer, Tom Huber, Julia MacGregor, and Virginia Shapoe. Tir S 1 15534 . s5y.a.f Firsf Rfll4': KlillBI'8li11fI', XY21ight. fD'BI'i9Il, Cox, Blewelt. Nfrnml HUIII' Hariri. Z:11-1-31111. Mr. North, Rolf Larsen, was a level headed fellow who lived in a quiet man- ner. His wife Pamela North, Jackie Maus, however, was quite the contrary and rather scatterbrained. She and her husband were involved in a strange sequence of events brought about by the murder of the husband of Pam's friend, Claire Brent, Adele Richards. Claire, though, becomes very interested in Louis Brex, Tom Cox. The play becomes very mixed up as everyone suspects everyone else as being the murderer. Tom Dye, also, spiced up the play with his Italian character role of Buono. The mix-up is finally straight- ened when the true murderer is finally brought to justice. Despite a record of three wins and six losses. two bright spots remain in our record book -fthe 18-12 upset defeat of Mount Lebanon and the resounding 20-T massacre of XVilkinsburg. The season started off with a 20-7 defeat handed to us by VVest View, Much to our sorrow the following game was worse as Penn was run over roughshod by Turtle Creek High to the tune of 38-0. The game started off badly, and by the second quarter, had turned into a track meet for Turtle Creek. Next week Penn seemed to settle down to business. The Latrobe game was a close one, hard-fought by both sides, The final score, however, was 20-12, Latrobe's favor. Finally, at Mt. Lebanon, Penn won. This was a thrill- ing contest in which Penn came from behind in the last quarter to win 18-12. The winning score came on a Frank Merriwell-like inter- ception and 79 yard runback by Strickengloss, History again repeated itself as Penn took another one from Shadyside, 28-0. It also must be considered that Shadyside had an exceptionally strong team. Just as things were beginning to look up. misfortune struck again in the form of Har-Brack and a fellow named Chester Gilchrest. From the looks of things, Har-Brack had eleven men on thc field, all named Gilchrest. When the dust had lifted, the scoreboard read 33-O for Har-Brack. Hampered by injuries, the Penn High eleven dropped a close game to Munhall. The game was close from the first quarter to the last and if the game had lasted a little longer, Penn might have been on the winning side of a 20-13 score. Next week, however, was Penn High's finest hour. Penn was a twenty point underdog as they faced unbeaten Wil- kinsburg who had defeated Turtle Creek,18-6. Much to the satisfaction of Penn rooters, the team proceeded to administer a sound thrashing to the Holy City by a 20-T score, Ends Carl Jones, John Parsons and Bob Goin scored for Penn behind the driving support of the other boys. This defeat knosked Wil- kinsburg out of the XV. P. I, A. L. race. In the final game of the season, Penn, hampered by fumbles and injuries, suffered a 26-0 loss. However, things look fairly good for next year. JUNIOR VA RSITY SCORES Penn Opp. Brentwood 7 I3 VVilkinsburg 7 6 Plum 6 12 Mt. Lebanon T 131 Braddock 20 T Taylor-Alderdice 15 T Swissvale ni 28 J. Vs. The new coach, Mr. Munson, had only one varsity player returning this season. Despite much effort and hard practice. Penn High finished the season with a rccord of three wins and sixteen losses. Penn started the season with a 53-41 Win over the Dragons of Taylor-Allderdice. La- trobe took the next contest by a 65-47 score. Penn also dropped the next two games, one to Crafton, 64-32, and one to Aspinwall, 49-46, the latter was a close contest. After the next game, Penn discovered themselves on the long end of a 43-34 score. Swissvale was on the short side. From then on it was a sad story as Penn High dropped twelve straight. The Indians lost to Oakmont 50-41, La- trobe 48-4T, and were stunned by Rankin 78-38. Next Scott and Braddock took Penn 51-42 and 82-51, respectively. Wilkinsburg revenged its football season by beating us 69-44. The first half season ended as Turtle Creek beat us 68-63. The second half began with four losses to Swissvale 63-52, Rankin 54-43, Jeannette 60-49, and Scott 65-42. True to our upset tradition Penn polished off league-leading Braddock 61-56. The season ended as Penn lost to Wilkinsburg 73-51 and Turtle Creek 71-45. Coach Schmidtke's junior varsity ended the season with a record of three wins and twelve losses. Despite a poor season Coach Munson can look forward to the return of three letter- men next season plus the junior varsity. VARSITY BASKETBALL Urs! Roux' VVilson, Bosnick, Stewart, Goin. HA Undel the capable coaching of Mr. Glenn Davis, Penn High's thinclads racked up another successful season. Of the forty boys participating, twenty earned the required twenty points needed to win a letter. The mile relay team composed of VVes Smith, Bruce Gribble, Charles Jackson. and George Markland set a new Penn High record of three minutes thirty-three and three tenths seconds. In dual meets Penn defeated Taylor-Aldredice, Schenley, Shadyside, New Kensington, and Turtle Creek, Our only dual defeat was handed to us by our rival, Mount Lebanon, who went on to take the VV.P.I.A.L. Championship. Penn did fairly well in three big meets of the season. At the VV.P.I.A.L, relays at Ccnnellsville, Penn tied for third place with Connellsville hosts, The team also placed third in the VVashington Invitation Meet and tenth place in the W.P.I.A.L. Although the results showed Penn won only two meets, two were lost by five points only and one by a slim margin of a single marker. Little or no experience proved a definite handicap to the team as there were no returning lettermen from last year's squad. Harry Zimmer, a fleet- footed junior, was Penn's outstanding harrier. In the Latrobe meet he hit his best stride of the season and came through with a 11:45 time. Jim and Joe Zaccardi also proved themselves capa- ble runners and were constant threats in many meets. Because the majority of this year's runners were sophomores and juniors, next year's team will have. we hope, a better advantage to begin with, and Penn can look forward to a more successful season. 1 '. Wolfe's wonders now defeated Shadyside, Kit- taning, and Springdale and Kittaning, Shadyside, and Plum in repeat matches. Oakmont, in the next to last match edged out a narrow victory over Penn to bring in a two place tie for the W.P.I.A.L Championship. In our final match we overpowered Springdale 15-0 to conclude the regular season and force a play-off with Oakmont. This year's team was composed of four seniors and one junior, so Mr. Wolfe will have to depend mainly on new material next year. Baseball .. .. .. BEST SEASON IN SCHOOL'S HISTORY One of the brightest spots in Penn High's athletics this year was the base- ball team. Coach Charles Alcorn guided Penn to second place in section fifteen of W.P.I.A.L. This has been the best baseball season in the history of Penn High School. Penn's season began with a win over Westinghouse and a tie with Shadyside in two exhibition contests. The team next defeated Scott, Braddock, and Swissvale in league games before being stopped by Turtle Creek in a hard- fought game. Next Penn endured three defeats at the hands of Wilkinsburg, Scott. and Braddock, plus the short loss of Mr. Alcorn who was briefly ill. Penn then proceeded to edge out Swissvale and take Turtle Creek by a landslide. The final game of the season saw Penn lose a close, hard-fought game to Wil- kinsburg and also first place in Section 15. Mr. Alcorn believes prospects are fav- orable next year when six lettermen return plus several more boys who saw some action this season. We all hope next year is a better one than this.
