Wrwmf E High on a hill overlooking the Salts- burg Road is located the council lodge of the Salem. Here each day gathers a group of scouts ever searching the hori- zon for something new. Here also the hunters seek that most prized but elu- sive game-learning. Their bow and arrow makes them the braves of to- morrow. In order to become braves, these Indians have enlisted in the ac- tivities of Penn High School-partici- pating in the various sports, organiza- tions and classes. It is the duty of the Swim-rr staff to bring back these price- less moments through a pictorial re- view of you and your friends. Therefore, we the Smzera staff of 1950, hereby present this long-to-be-cherished edi- tion of the Smzcm. 2-gr Carl, our Injun'1 mascot Helping ca neu' rf'r'ruit . Messenger, Mrs. Saunders. emvr 1 t S' iifvq FLIGHTY FRESHMEN 1946-1947 Frantically asked directions of thc upper classmen . . . purposely got wrong answers . . . remember that first pep-meeting . . . really a thrill to yell for our team . . . even the lack of seats in the auditorium didn't dim our spirit . . . the Sophomore Class gave us a rousing welcome at the Frosh-Soph Kick-Off . . . then there was the bus strike during December when we got to school the best we could, and some of us didn't quite make it . . . in March we had our own class party and what a time we had . . . a lot of lasting friendships were made this year. SCI-IOLARLY SOPHOMORES 1947-1948 No longer uncertain of just what to do . . . we knew all the answers or almost all . . . got from upper-classmen the previous year '... teased the Freshmen in the same manner as we had . . , no longer did we sit in assembly watching' the others putting on skits and performing . . . al- ready our reputation was established for our ability to put on good advertisements . . . our party for the Freshmen. a booming success . . . everyone had a good time at the Bookworm Ball . . . of course, the name was rather satir- ical . . . at our own class party in March we became the first class to have an orchestra for the occasion . . . the new look was firmly estab- lished this year, and with it. new records were already being set by the Class of 350. JOCULAR JUNIORS 1948-1949 Upper-classmen . . . we couldn't believe it . . . Christmas dance with all the decorations, a great success . . . our class play, The Man YVho Came to Dinner , a never-to-be-forgotten production . . . thirty characters in the play . . . our good- byes conveyed to the seniors at the reception in May . . .beautiful decorations, dreamy music . . . this was our way of saying, 'Now it's our turn to take over . . . we had waited a long time to try the Seniors' seats for size. STUPENDOUS SENIORS 1949-1950 Enough of taking things as they come . . . we set right to work at building up our treasury from a pauper's fund to a millionaire's dream , , . our magazine campaign goal of 353,500 was topped by almost 31.000, belittling all former records . . . then to further prove that the Class of '50 has what it takes, we went to even greater heights with our class play, VVhat a Life! . . . another big cast, another big success . . . our Hick Hop in December went over with a bang' '... no wonder, with those clever skits . . . it's not every day we see a horse on the stage . . . wc set another record at our banquet this spring, for no other class had ever held one . . . when wc received our diplomas, we had a wonderful feeling of a job well done . . . and we know we have just come through the Best Years of Our Lives . Returning home again for their next contest, Penn edged a strong Uniontown aggregation, 19-13, as the Indians won their second AA game. The following week Penn met defeat for the second time, this time at the hands of Mt. Lebanon, 19-12, who went on to an un- defeated season in league competition. Although we outplayed them, the team with the most points won. Penn won their next game, a free scoring thriller, when they trimmed a fast Shady- side eleven, 20-18, at home. Bolte scored all three touchdowns and rolled up 160 yards in what proved to be one of his best games of the season. But the next week we journeyed to Har-Brack and got our ears pinned back, 40-0, by what was said to be one of their strongest teams in five years. At this point we had a mediocre season with three wins and three losses, but Penn finally found themselves as they won their next three games, Munhall found the Indians too strong, for we beat them, 20-13, in a rough and tumble affair. In our next encounter we trounced our bitter rivals, Wilkinsburg, on their muddy field, 19-6. Penn pushed the Tigers all over the field as Bolte scored twice and Harris once. The season ended at Altoona when most of the boys playing their last game for Penn played their best game and we walloped the home team, 24-0. Coach Fisher's boys scored in every quarter, Wood tallying twice and Urban and Bolte once each. Throughout the season the spirit of the boys was evident as they played their hearts out in every game and did not stop fighting until the final gun. With the current coaching staff re- maining intact in the future, along with spirit of the present team living on, Penn should, no doubt, be even more successful on the scholastic gridiron in years to come. KaAlzet6al This year Mr. Robert iBuckyl Walters returned to coach the Penn High cagers again. The squad was built around such holdovers from last year's varsity as Paul Harris, Sam Williams, Bob Snyder, and Charles Strickengloss. The remainder of the varsity included Bill Taylor, Ed Wood, Melvin Hammer- strom, Bob Bolte, Howard Carson, Max- well Nelson, Bill Cooper, Jim Malley, Don Sampson, Charles Kunkel, and Ken Conwell. This year we again were placed in Section 8, with some of the toughest W. P. I. A. L. teams. The team got off to a fast start, beating Jeannette, 45-44, Taylor All- derdice, 45-343 and Mt. Lebanon, 37-333 for three quick victories. Then Penn lost the next three to Oakmont, 35-433 Midland, 34-46, and Aspinwall, 41-56, which concluded the pre-season ex- hibitions. After Christmas vacation Penn ran into some tough breaks and dropped two close ones to Swissvale, 53-56, and Rankin, 35-40. Then we dropped three hard-fought games to Munhall, 32-473 Scott, 31-533 and Brad- dock, 30-433 before going to Wilkins- burg. At Wilkinsburg our basketeers played good ball but were subdued, 31-41. After this the team went on to drop two more to Turtle Creek, 31-45, and Oakmont. 45-51. The Indians started the second half with a bang, beating Swissvale, 47-40. Our hopes were quickly dampened as the boys were outclassed by Rankin 33-62. Then came once-beaten Jean- nette, but the Indians just weren't on , losing 33-68. After this defeat the bas- keteers tried hard but they were out- classed in the next three games by Scott, 34-483 Braddock, 26-475 and Wil- kinsburg, 37-63. In the last game the Indians gave their all as they lost a close one to Turtle Creek, 53-57. High scorer of the season was Paul Harris with 169 points, followed by Bob Bolte with 119. Next year we are looking forward to more victories since the first team this year was comprised of mostly juniors, who gained much valuable experience.
