Linton, typify his spirit and interest in our educational system. Then, too, his new plans, the inauguration of additional courses and the introduction of new departments, will give Penn a higher standard and rating among Pennsylvania schools. This forward look of Mr. Linton's has made the seniors more am- bitious to strive for bigger and better things. Therefore, We, the Senior Class of 1948, proudly dedicate our best efforts, the 1948 Seneca, to Mr. Linton who has given graciously of his time, effort, and understanding. it-Xn important call for Mr. Linton S K - f. C1944-l945J Once a group of scared greenies entered the Pearly Gates of PENN HIGH. Scared! That wasn't the word for it, we were petriHed. Not knowing the in's and out's of this new, wonder- ful, but frightening world, we vainly sought ele- vators in the halls, sneaked behind doors for rooms, not daring to ask upperclassmen, because they would try to give us tokens for elevators and to misinform us generally. Slowly, we became accustomed to the rules and regulations of this great institution. Soon we began to feel a warmth about us. What was it? That good ol' PENN HIGH Spirit. We boosted the Freshman Party. We ignored the know it all upperclassmen and Hnally ended our freshmen year with dreaded exams, ready to become EAGER SOPHOMORES C1945-19465 Yes, we're grown up. 'lihat year, with the feeling of Panicky Freshmen polished away and the feeling of Eager Beavers acquired, we were ready to set examples for the new freshmen! Through the football season, at every game and rally, the voices of the Sophomores mingled with those of the mighty juniors and seniors, backing our boys. We tried to set the fashions by wear- ing the latest fads: blue jeans, sloppy shirts, cor- duroy jackets, bright shoe strings, and color- rimmed glasses. We had a grand welcoming for freshmen at our Reception, which was the best ever! 'llhen the end of the term came and once again we crammed for exams, but we looked for- ward to becoming upperclassmen, preferably, NONCHALANT JUNIORS C1946-19475 Peppy, jolly, upperclassmen-that was the lifel We started that year with great enthusiasm. We organized our own clubs and participated in the activities of the student body. Of course, being upperclassmen presented its problems too. We groaned, sighed, and some even missed that early bus. Remember how successfully we pro- duced Ann of Green Gables to build up our treasury? We spent the money in grand style for the Junior-Senior Reception. Remember, too, how eager we were to try the senior seats for size, to become the NOTABLE SENIORS C1947-19485 That was really the year-more class offices, stronger representation in the student body, more social life, our play, You Can't Take It With You, the sports, and many other events. Four years came and went. Years that were full of triumphs and disillusionments. Years that put our class on the pages of PENN HIGH his- tory, long to be remembered. We now recall moments of joy, sorrow, wonder and pleasure in the making of new friends, pretense of sophis- tication, the pleasure of giving help and false information to the Panicky freshmen, the tense- ness of cramming for examinations-All those reminiscences passed in review as we doffed our hats and gowns and voiced a parting word or two to our Alma Mater, PENN HIGH. PENN HIGH Produces all-around athletes I OO'l'I3A I,I, With Pro liurton returning for the seeond straight year and a newcomer Bucky VValters ahly assisting, our Penn High Indians finished the season with a 50-50 average-winning 5 while losing the same numher. 'llhe squad was huilt around such stalwart performers as Richard Pradetto, Paul Bruno, and ,Iohn Patellos from last year's eleven. Newcomers to the lirst string include .lim Sims, 'llom llurl, ,lack lVlartin, Harry Zaspel, Pete Dozzi, Dick Inman, Francis Ran- kin, and Frank Hromyak. Penn started ofl the season hy swamping l'lum in exhibition play hy the score of -ll-0. Our next game was a AA game with Latrohe whom we defeated 7-6. 'llhe extra point after touchdown was seored in l3runo's plunge. Uakmont was the next vietim in a Completely one sided game 53-Il, Wye then won our fourth straight, downing hilt. l,ehanon I9-6. Bruno ran 65 yards to seore one of the six points. Penn then traveled to Braddock to win easily ll-II. lllhat made it live in a row, hut then all good things must come to an end, so did Pennls victory string. VVe were then heaten hy Har-llraek 7-6, lklunhall 6-U, Vklilkinshurg I-I-II, 'llarentum 38-19, and Altoona 20-6. Highlights of the season inelude Vlohn l rey's 65- yard run in the Plum game, and Pat lVleyer's 75 yard run in the Ilraddoek game. Paul Bruno was high scorer with 72 points which was also good enough to he third in the district. Perhaps, with a few good hreaks and outstanding spirit our lads may enjoy even a hetter season next year. I,As'l' Row: R. Lung, G. iIII1UI112IS IJ, TL-nm-nt, 'If Shafer, B. Rcmlfcrn, I, Dalzell, R. He built his team around such hold- overs from last year's varsity as Dick Drum, George Schardt, Bill Richardson, Dick Inman, and Bob Eggleston, all of whom are seniors. Newcomers to the varsity included jim Ward, Nino Barcellino, Fred Stewart, Roland john- son, and jack Sylba. Penn again played in Section 8, which includes some of the toughest teams in W. P. I. A. L. competition. Our Indians opened the season with a victory by scalping Verona 32-27. However, Mt. Lebanon gave us our first defeat 39-32. We bounced back to beat Shaler 40-28 but then lost twice to Oakmont in very close games 31-25 and 33-29. Again we licked Shaler, this time by the score of 35-34. In league com- petition our Indians were subdued by Swiss- vale 50-36 but beat Rankin in a thriller 37-35. We then 'took two beatings, one from Braddock 30-24, and the other from our rival Wilkins- burg 43-25. This score does not indicate how close the game really was. Penn at one time led 11-3 and even led at the half. However, Wilkinsburg came back strong to win. Our next victim was Turtle Creek whom we de- feated 43-42. Swissvale then beat us or the second time 60-44. We again scalped Rankin 61-44 but then lost the rest of our games to Verona 42-27, Scott 55-47, Braddock 66-43, Wilkinsburg 70-23, and Turtle Creek 53-33. High scorer for the season was Dick Inman with 140 points, followed by jim Ward with 121 points. '61.es and Ed in action 3265011 '5 iPenn ...... 32 'Penn ..,... 32 'Penn . CROSS COUNTRY TRACK With Coach Davis at the helm the Cross Country Track Team has had a busy season coming through eleven scheduled meets with six wins and live losses. This yearfs team has been the largest by far of any previous season and the team's record has also surpassed all previous years. The first two meets were lost to Mt. Lebanon and New Castle with the Penn barriers Hnally hitting their stride in a quadrangular meet with Brentwood, Carrick, and Langley followed by another win over Langley. The first home meet found Penn on the losing end to Canonsburg. Central Catholic was defeated followed by a loss to Kittanning. In the final four meets of the sea- son Penn managed to win over New Kensington, Connellsville, and Ambridge, on the losing end only to Aliquippa. In the district W. P. I. A. L. meet held at Alcoma Country Club Bob Branch and Don VVilliams qualified for the State Meet placing eighth and thirteenth respectively. At the annual P. I. A. A. State Cross Country Meet held at State College Don Williams placed fifth and also at the A. A. U. junior four and a half mile race again took Hfth honors proving his merit as one of the best distance runners ever trained at Penn High. TRACK With Mr. Davis back at the helm, Penn en- joyed a somewhat successful season. Our first meet was with New Kensington whom we defeated by the score of 8516-411f2. Yedlicka was a standout, taking both the pole vault and broad jump. In our next meet we de- feated Central Catholic 81-46. Here, as in the first meet, Penn's weakness was in the dashes and discus. Our next meet was a dual meet with Canonsburg. The boys made a fine showing and defeated Canonsburg 73-54. Haines took three firstsg in the shot put, discus, and javelin. Then Penn met their first defeat in a four-way meet with Connellsville, Washington, and Trinity. Penn bounced right back to defeat Clairton 81 lf,- 45 273. But then Penn met their next defeat which was with Mt. Lebanon. In a triangular meet with Plum and Turtle Creek, Penn came out on top with 11016 points to Plum's 26 and Turtle Creek's 241A. After that we downed Shadyside SO-33, and Butler 71 176-56 576. Penn also took their own Little Penn Relays. A great deal of credit should go to Al Yerl- licka who, besides setting two records at Penn High those being the pole vault with a leap of 11 feet 91A inches, and the broad jump with a leap of 21 feet 11 inches, won the state pole vaulting championship. Lonnie Haines also set a record in the javelin with a hurl of 174 feet, 3 inches. fvfj . . . Brings us many championships Swvrisn: W, lfazi, -I. Kennedy, R, Smith. S'l'ANnlNrQ: N. Sahock, G, Duncan, N. lfigura, Mr, Wolfe. GOLF When Mr. Peters left last year, he took with him all the memhers of a squad which had won two consecu- tive W. P. I. A. l,. championships, llis successor, Mr. blames Wolfe, molded together a fairly strong team consisting of Richard Smith, Gene Duncan, Nick Sahock, ,lack Kennedy, Norm Figura, and Bill Fazi. Of these Smith and Duncan were seniorsg Figura and Fazi, juniorsg and Kennedy and Sahock, sophomores. ln our first match we smothered New Kensington hy the score of 12-3. But in our next match with Oak- mont we met our first defeat 9-6. Our next opponent was Plum Whom we trimmed 9-6. 'lihen came our big match which was with Har-lirack. VVC knew we had to win this one to stay in the running. However, we were heaten hy the score of Slfz-6lf2. 'lihe score was closer than one might think since the match wasn't decided until the last hole when a Har-Brack player sunk a ten foot putt, thus giving Har-Brack the vic- tory. After that we edged Kiski, 8-7, trounced New Kensington l-flfp-VZ, defeated Oakmont 9-6, and then were heaten hy Har-Brack l2-3 and Kiski 81f2-61f2. ilihis year marked the first time Penn didn't win the championship when they were represented. However, with Sahoek, Kennedy, lfigura, and Fazi coming hack, we should have a formidable team for 1947-1948. .qeaion 'J pdilllfi if GOLF SCORES Penn . .12 Penn Penn . . Q Promotes keen competition This year found Mr. Prev Burton coaching our baseball team. Most of the players from last yearls team returned. Among these were Bill Richardson, Jim Bowers, John Frey, Kurt Zaspel, and a newcomer, Dick Inman. In our first game of the season we went down in defeat to Braddock by a 7-3 score. Two two-base errors helped the Braddock cause considerably. Our next contest was with Wilkinsburg, who trimmed us 7-2. Again errors helped Penn's downfall. Then we were edged by Turtle Creek 7-5. An error allowing three runs to score followed by a homer-all after two were out, gave the Creekers their victory. ln the following games we were trimmed by Swissvale 6-4 and edged by Scott 6-3. The final games were all lost by a very close score. Swissvale defeated us 4-3, Wilkinsburg trimmed us 7-S, and Turtle Creek again edged us 7-6. Although they ended the season without a victory, the boys might have won some games had they received a good break here and there, Then, too, with many of the boys from last year's starting line-up returning, to- gether with the help of some up-coming players, we should provide enough for a successful season, and Penn should be in there fighting when the sectional play-offs arrive next season.
