Senior Class History Came the second of September in 19413 This meant our days at Penn had just begun. There were classes and studies and other bores, Such as being called Greenies', for looking behind doors. Then there was girls' shop class, Which helped us the time to pass. But it wasn't all work and no playg Our activities and socials were all very gay. Jean Davis emerged our Freshman Queeng At the Fall Fiesta our glances toward her did lean. The Rostrum was this year re-installed, And in the Mikado some gladly participated, Then in March came our Freshman Party, To which none were the least bit tardy. The second annual Band Concert was put on And our band the championship of Western Pennsyl- vania won. Then final exams and one year was gone, With three more glorious ones to come. o o e n Now as sophisticated sophomores We re-entered Penn High's doors. No longer Freshies, we felt much at homey Quite free, these now familiar halls, to roam. Jim Truschel and Martha Curran were king and queen, This year we got a soph on the varsity basketball team. By girls everywhere feather bobs were worn. And nail polish of blue and green some did scorn. We had a dance band the other schools to showg Miss Margaret Reed left us to teach recreation at the U. S. O. Junior Homemakers gave the school the Honor Rollg For our Junior Class oflicers our votes we did poll. In May we got our beautiful class rings, Then final exams-and bing! Another year had taken wing. Back we strutted in 1943 in September, With underclass daze to remember. Now upperclassmen, we were given a try. To membership of Girl Reserves, Cue and Curtain, and Hi-Y. Baggy sweaters and Frankie with his bow ties Were getting all the lassies' sighs. While crew cuts, juke chains, and splashy jackets Were giving the boys an edge in making rackets. In November came The Turkey Trot, And our kings and queens it brought. Ours, Mary Halloran and Tom Nicholson, Made a very pleasing twosome. Then came the brightened Christmas season, The Junior Class Yuletide Ball was the reason. Too, we gave each girlie a chance Her fellow to grab at the Leap Year Dance. Next our class play, Where There's a Will. Our purpose, the treasury to fill. To head our Senior class, we bade President, James Truschel, a most capable ladg Vice President, Natale Goss, to a nice guy we gave our votesg Secretary, Martha Curran, she attends to all memos and notes. Treasurer, David Thomas, to him we entrusted our money woesg Historian, Jacqueline Niesen, this story to write, but not in prose. To the strains of Auld Lang Sync our hearts did swellg At the Reception we bade our senior friends farewell. And thus another year in our memories dwell. As Seniors we came to realize That now we were the school's prize. Soon football season came alongg We found more meaning in our school song. At football games performed our band, And our high-stepping majorettes looked grand. As the highlight, many remember Latrobe on the sixteenth of September. Then came football season's closing With our North Team, the South's opposing, In the first All-Star game ever played Their sponsorship Penn Lions generously made. Penn Points gave us our kings and queens At our dance for Halloween. The Seniors that reigned, Homer Evans and Frances Victor When crowned, made an exceedingly lovely picture. We hit a new high in our magazine sale, Thanks to those who brought in the kale. On November twenty-second, we gave a dance, The best, of course, The Pilgrims' Prancef' Then our class play on December the eighth, With She's a Soldier's Sweetheart on the name plate. With Leonard Russo and Corrine Eggleston in lead- ing roles, But all fifteen were swell as a whole. The Juniors played host, at the last dance of the yearg Then came vacation, and '45 was here. It's another new year and we must strive For our last mid-term exams in this 1945. Our mid-season dance was enjoyed by all classes, This made us think how quickly time passes. Our band really put on a concert worth whileg Penn certainly is proud of their musical style. Our prom recollections remain in our hearts And yet make us sad, for soon we must part. At the Class Day program, our four years we related, To bring back memories which may have faded. At the Reception we bade a fond farewell To the old Alma Mater we love so well. Let's take this opportunity to show that we're grateful To all the teachers who worked hard and faithful, The Baccalaureate service gave us courage to face Our Commencement so sad, with a little more grace. J ACQUELINE NIESEN, H istorian. EVENT- Where Theres a Will. WHERE-Penn's Auditorium. WHEN-April 21, 1944. The fun develops out of the reading of a will by a middle-aged lawyer. Henry Hale lJames Truschell and the strange bequests named by the deceased. Those who anticipate the most, get nothing and those who are lucky must fulfill certain provisos. One be- quest is to a young studious girl. Lorna Keith 1Janet Duffettl, provided she does not marry until she is v b4 '9YQ-V4 G 4' U 1 1.0 . If 3.1 .. in twenty-one. If she does. as her dignified mother. Mrs. Zella Keith 1Lois York! doubts. her inheritance will go to another relative. At once domineering Mrs. Al- ice Emerson 1Doris Wellingsl tries to marry Lorna oil to a shy. retiring encyclopedia agent. Ralph Macy 1John Puntonl so that Linda 1Betty Gibsonl, her at- tractive daughter, will receive the money. Another legacy is left to the hen-pecked husband, James Em- erson lTom Bondi, provided he becomes master of his own home. This appears impossible but in the end he asserts himself and the money is his. Tessie 1Sara Jane Sampsonl. the slow. lazy maid. supplies comedy and complications galore. Wallace Taylor lWalter Kellerl. a thoroughly likeable lad, is Lorna's fiancee. A touch of youth is added to this gay performance by Sylvia Terry 1Dona Fowlerl, Jane Scott lEvelyn Cer- vanyakl, Edmund Lewis fJack Daviesl, and Gates Austin 4George Tsounosl, Contrary to your belief throughout the play, the will is finally carried out to the letter. Paula 'Frances Victor! and Coralie 1Helen Shirerl. Paula. a tall. slender glamour girl. has Phil 'John Smithv. a pal of Kip's. on the proverbial string, while Coralie. whose charm lies in her baby talk relies on Whitey 4John Puntonr to date her when Kip isn't available. Dcspite the warnings of Grandpop 4Carl Clarkl. his play-acting grandfather. and grand- mom lVirginia Edmondsl. Kip is certain that his complicated love affairs won't cause any trouble. When Andrea Vale 'Corrine Egglestonl. a young actress. appears on the scene with her press agent Gordon lJaCk Daviesv. Kip falls hard for her. He seems to be making progress in the task of running Andreas affections when Francy tells about her letter writing job, Andrea accuses Kip of wanting all the girls to be waiting for him while he's in the army. The situation gets cleared up and Andrea and Kip announce their engage- ment. Throughout the play Ricky fDave Thomasl. Kip's fifteen-year-old brother. supplies the laughs by trying to perform magic stunts and by his constant battle with Francy. Leota 4.Iune Hyamsb. Kay 4Mary Jane Stewartl and Laurette 1Beverly Keirl. the re- porters from screen magazines, are engaged by Gordon to give Andrea publicity in their magazines.
