Excellently directed by Mrs. Maree Palmer, the plot concerns an eminent brain surgeon, Dr. Wayne Hudson tJack Sny- derl, who drowns and is survived by his sec- ond wife Helen tFreddy Dixon! and his daugh- ter Joyce lBetty Buschel. Bobby Merrick lAn- gclo Salvadorl, a wealthy playboy, competes with Monty tBill Koscol, in his interest for Joyce, and is blamed by Mrs. Hudson for the death of her husband. Later in lifc Bobby sees his mistake and decides to devote his life to brain surgery. Dr. Pyle tEd Woodingsl, the doctor's able assistant, leaves the Hudson home after the doctor's death. Nancy Ashford tAudrey Hobel, is a so- phisticated woman well liked by everyone who aids in opening Bobby Merrick's eyes and urges him to perform a brain operation on Helen after an automobile accident. This saves her life and she forgives Bobby for his wrong- doing. The handyman lSelig Harrisoro and the maid tJane Stitti are kept busy with the fam- ily's comings and goings. Friends of the doctor who drop in occasion- ally are Mr. and Mrs. Dawson tJesse Snyder and lvlarjorie Ottel and Mrs. Wickes 4Helen Sucklingl. Pat Regan ably portrays the role of nurse to Bobby Merrick. In addition to this outstanding performance, the seniors also presented Ever Since Eve in 1943. This is the story of a high school news- paper establishment and the entanglements that occur when girls try to run it. The love interest is provided when one of the young sophisticated teachers discovers the school principal. Mea- sles, girl editors, parents troubles. and love was included to make up a marvelous production ably directed by Miss Marguerite Heggie. The five included F. Grabowski. E. Dander. H. Graham, R. Fowkes. and B. Kosco. The team was hard hit by the loss of E. Wheeler and Burt to the Navy. R. Covol and W. Patellos to the Marines. Prospects were brightened by the turning out of 56 boys for pre-season practice. Although the turnout was large, the weight was comparatively small. The av- erage for the varsity was 151 pounds. Two teams appeared for the first time on Penn's schedule. These were Har-Brac and Scott, both night games. The opening game on September ll. found the In- dians locked in battle with our ancient rival, Wilkins- burg. For the first time in six years. Wilkinsburg found themselves out-fought and out-played by the Penn grid- sters, Penn was hampered early in the Hrst quarter by injuries to Grabowski and Dander. Late in the fourth quarter Penn's scoring hopes soared when the Indians advanced the ball to Wilkinsburgs five-yard line, but were unable to cross the goal. The score was Penn 0, Wilkinsburg 0. On September 18, Penn was host to a powerful ag- gregation from Westinghouse. Operating from the T- formation, Westinghouse managed to score one touch- down but was unable to tally another against Penn's valiant Indians. The Braves dropped their second home game to a powerhouse team from Oakmont. Earl Fowkes played his last game for Penn High against Oakmont, before enlisting in the Navy. The final score was Oak- mont 27, Penn 0. On October 18, Turtle Creek, a potential W.P.I.A.L. contender, was host to Penn. The Indians showed indom- itable spirit but were trampled 26 - 0. On a parallel with last year Penn defeated a strong Shadyside Academy team 12-7. This was Penn's first vic- tory of the season. Sparked by the beautiful running of Kosco and Versaw. Penn scored two touchdowns in the second half to come from behind and win the game. The feature of the game was a goal line stand by Penn on their own six-inch line. Shadyside failed to make it. Inaugurating something new in Penn's football an- nals, the Indians journeyed to Har-Brac to play a night game on a soggy, slippery field in the rain. Penn dom- inated thc play in the first half but Har-Brac was not to be denied. They pushed across two touchdowns in the second half to win 12 - 0. After a two-weeks' rest Penn journeyed to Scott to play another night game. Scott's operations from the T-formation proved too much for the Indians and Penn was defeated 44 - 12. Joe George scored both touchdowns for Penn in this fracas. The final game of the season with Plum on Novem- ber 6, was not as free-scoring as last year's game but gave a real thrill to both sides. Penn scored first on a 95-yard drive in the first quarter. In the third quarter Plum managed to score but could not come through with the extra point. When the final gun sounded it found Penn ahead 7 - 6. Penn garnered sixteen first downs compared with eight for the Mustangs. At the half during the Plum game Mr. Matthew Alcorn, head coach, notified the team that this was his last year as head coach for Penn High. We would like to express our sincere gratification to Mr. Alcorn and wish him th The little-mentioned Junior Varsity of Penn High came through with an undefeated season. They played Turtle Creek, Oakmont, Swissvale, and Wilkinsburg jun- ior varsities. If this is a harbinger of good things to come, Penn High should really have a bang-up foot- ball team next year. Zfwwdg This group of boys, headed by Tom Nicholson, was organized just this year by Mr. M. Alcorn to estab- lish a better understanding among athletes in our school and to create a greater interest in athletics among the student body. Although it is a new club, the members intend to hold social events and have sponsored movies related to sports. To gain membership each boy must earn an ath- e letic letter. He receives a permanent membership best of luck and success. card when he leaves Penn High.
