After getting OH to a torrid start at the opening of the season, the 1966 Penn track team, hobbled by injuries, lost its last six dual meets in a row. However, Coach Frank O,Shea's squad, domi- nated by underclassmen, made a good showing for the season. Their final record ended at 3-6. Injuries played a key part in the misfortunes in the latter half of the season. Star senior sprinter Dick Fulmer pulled a leg muscle and missed much of the season. Steve Rockenbaugh, a promising junior, missed much of the season also. Highly touted pole vaulter Fred Kelver also missed nearly all of the season. However, the youngsters, including many promising freshmen, came through in strong fashion. Six freshman records were set during the season, one sophomore mark, and two school marks. Fulmer, despite running very little, earned his fourth letter in the track and held sport and re- ceived a special trophy for achieving this difficult feat. ,Iunior Roger Weldy, who was named most valuable for the 1966 season and will captain the 1967 squad, earned his second letter. He also set a new school record in the quarter mile. jun- ior Steve Rockenbaugh, who earned his third let- ter in track, set a new school record in the half- mile during the regular season. Resurgence could be the key word to describe the 1966 Penn golf team. Led by sensational senior Bill johnson, who Fired an all-time Penn best average score of 79, the squad compiled a 7-8 record. This mark is the best ever for a Penn squad. johnson, the most valuable player and honorary cap- tain for the past season, truly deserved the honors he received, as he proved to be one of the top golfers in the area, if not in the state. Coach Bill -Iagg had four other boys who were regular competitors, and all won major letters. Freshman Dick Ross, who shows potential of becoming an outstanding golfer in the next three years, had the second best average on the squad with an 85. Senior Darrell Gunn followed at 87 and juniors Mike Wag- goner and Ron Frantz carded averages of 89 and 92 respectively. Varsity Golf Teamg L to R-Dick Ross, Blike Waggoner.
