Led by the slugging trio of seniors Don Holmes, Glen Stevenson, and Tom Ritter, the 1966 Penn baseball team shook off a midseason slump and won its last Hve games of the season to end the year in fine fashion. Hampered by lack of practice and games due to rainy weather, the diamondment compiled a 6-4 record against tough competition. Highlighting the season was the five game victory streak to close the campaign. Included in the victory skein, which began just after the team had dropped four games in a row, were a Zfl victory over St. xI0seph's on Stevensonls home run, a doubleheader sweep against North Liberty, and a 5-1 clubbing of tough South Bend Adams. Holmes, one of the best athletes ever to compete at Penn, was much of the story during the 1966 campaign. He posted a .387 batting average to take the hitting crown, and was the mainstay of the pitching staH'. Hur- ling 47 innings of baseball, Holmes nabbed Eve of the teamjs half dozen victories, fanned 86 batters while walk- ingjust 27 and gave upjust 19 safeties. Stevenson batted .286 to finish third in the batting race, ending up behind Holmes and Ritter, who hit .345. Stevenson was also named honorary captain for the past season. He was the team's centerHelder for the past three seasons. Ritter, the squad's first baseman, ended an out- standing season by being named the most valuable per- former on the team. The B team, under the directorship of First year mentor .Iohn Luse, compiled a 5-6 record, scoring wins over LaPorte, Adams, Marion, and two over North Lib- erty. Greg Minnegar hit .417 to lead the team in batting, and Kerry Slater and Bob Yenna hit .375 and .381 re- spectively. Yenna and Doug Freeman each won two games as pitchers.
