The Penn High School wrestling team, led by senior stand-outs Phil Miller and Mike Mroczek, compiled a very respectable record of 6-6 during dual competition this past year. Although not as many boys turned out as expected, the young team responded well according to head coach Don Quimby. Of the record number of 11 boys receiving their varsity letters this season, three complied excellent records. Senior captain Miller and Sophomore jeh' Primmer had identical records of 15-4 while three year letterman Mroczek has the impressive record of 15-3-1. Sophomores earning their first var- sity letters were Mel Shorb, Bill Avery, Dan Stevenson, and Roy Barrier. .Iuniors receiving their first varsity let- ters were Ron Colborn, Rich Hofiman, Dennis Sager, andllerry Wood. Highlighting the Penn mat season were wins over arch rivals Mishawaka and South Bend Clay. Penn's surprise victory over the highly rated Clay team was one of the biggest upsets ofthe entire season. Of the more im- portant events of the 1965-1966 wrestling year, Penn's greatest achievement came in winning the Culver Invita- tional. Our wrestlers also finished sixth in the very tough South Bend Sectional and second in the Penn Invitational. Under the able assistance of B-Team coach Harvey Hurst, the reserves compiled the best record ever com- piled by a Penn B-Team. Their record for the past mat season was 9-3-Z. Mr, Tom Roggcman, perhaps better known as the head football coach at Washington High School. spends one of' his winter evenings refereeing a Penn wrestling meet. Here he keeps an intent eye on PHS grappler Rich Hofiman during a close match, These 12 fellows were the mainstays ofthe Penn wrestling team the TOP ROW, l to r are: assistant coach Harvey Hurst, Rich during the 1965-1966 campaign.
