DEBATE GLUBkROW ONE: Terry Shaller, Richard Worthington, Mrs. Betty Smith, Sponsor: Nelson Worden. ROW TWO: Linda Chapman, Bruce Erich Smith, Phil Goddard, Virgil Wesco. Pew Vwwrtg Debams Thaw ow Phil Goddard and Bruce Erich Smith exchange some note ideas in preparation for varsity competition in the St. Joseph Valley League. Varsity debater Phil Goddard gets in some practice time rehearsing for the national competition in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Penn High School debate team began the school year with a great disadvantage, having only one mem- ber, Bruce Erich Smith, return from last year. This handi- cap was soon overcome, however, and we Finished with a very good year. We debated in many of the invitational meets around the state, winning a good percentage of our debates. We hope to place third in the St. Joseph Valley league of the area schools. The team of Phil Goddard and Bruce Erich Smith got to the semifinals in the W.S.B.T. radio debates. This same team won over 9095 of their debates this year! Singular accomplishments, many in speech, include: Bruce Erich Smith placed 5th in the extemporaneous speech contest, and won First place in the area discussion com- petition. Terry Shaller won the Regional contest in the Optimist Glub speech competition and was eligible to compete in the state contest, and Phil Goddard finished 4-th in the nation in the Douglas C High Oratorical Gon- test, sponsored by the Sons of the American Revolution.
