Tennis mwLGoRI7 Spring, With a corps of returning lettermen that includes the team's cleanup batter, a .350 hitter, and a strong-armed pitcher from Madison, the 1965 baseball team is in a good position to surpass its 8-9 record of last year. Catcher Denny Horne leads a corps of 12 returning lettermen into the rugged 1965 season. Horne, who topped the team in runs batted in the last two years in his cleanup position, will also pitch. Don Holmes, junior fastballer from Madison, will pitch and share third base duties with Mike I-Iurtekant, another pitching prospect. Other returning lettermen include Larry Katterheinrich, a .350 swatter last year, Dave Lung, Rich Clark, Carl Martin, Glen Steven- son, Steve Miller, John lfVachs, and Alan Beehler and Bob Moore from Madison. Gone from last year's team is leading hurler Keith Ber- key, pitcher Dave Mock and infielders Bruce Coffman, last year's MVP, and Tony Vanderl-Ieyden. VARSITY GOLF SQUAD-L-R Bill Johnson, Darrell Gunn, Bill Austin. Ron Frantz, Mike Waggener, Paul Mecklenberg, Coach Bill Jagg. Larry Katterheinrich, Tom Rentschler. cuwbllallz ' Although the 1964 edition of the Penn tennis team failed to win a match in seven outings, coach Bob Brady looks for better things this fall. Seniors Bruce Edward Smith and Larry Katter- heinrich and juniors Gary McCammon, Tom Rentschler, Wally Steibritz, and Ray Golata were the boys who dressed for the matches with Northern Indiana Conference teams. Golata and Steibritz, who Brady credits with do- ing an outstanding job in their first attempts at tennis, will return along with Rentschler and squad captain and MVP McCammon to form a solid nucleus for this fallis team. The 1965 golf squad, under the guidance of head coach Bill Jagg, began its practice early in April with high hopes for a prohtable season. Onlv one letterman, senior Paul Mecklenberg, returned from last year, but nonetheless there was an optimistic outlook. Mecklenberg was joined by junior Bill Johnson, who transferred to Penn from Pennsylvania last year but could not play on last year's team because of ineligibility, to form a solid one-two punch. The entire team, with the exception of Mecklenberg, is composed of underclassmen, so the future looks bright. Joining Mecklenberg and Johnson on the five man varsity team were juniors Darrell Gunn and Phil Yankee and sophomores Ron Frantz and Bill Austin. Several of them also saw action on the seven man B-team last year. The linksmen lost two good players, Bob Tripple and Paul Rowe, from last yearls squad. Once again the golfers played all their home matches on the Eberhart Golf Course in Mishawaka.
