Mrs Irene Arndt Chairman of the Business Department, conducts a short- hand and transcription class Juniors Sharon Sones and Karen Grose are pic- tures of concentration as they keep up with the transcription via shorthand. Seniors Donna Austin and Pam Javis make prac- tical use of cluplicator in office practice class. The Business Department at P.H.S. offers students three distinctly different courses. These are a stenographic course, a clerical course, and a bookkeeping course, The sten- ographic course includes shorthand, typing, and business English. The clerical course includes typing and the use of office ma- chines. The bookkeeping course includes tax and corporation bookkeeping. In addition to the specialized courses inte- rested students, particularly those bound for college, can acquire skills in notehand and personal typing, The department offers job training for those interested in suppliment- ing college funds and offers a wide variety for those who seek a career in business. Mrs. Irene Arndt is the chairman of the business department and she is assisted by Mrs. An- derson, Mrs. Hibschman, Mrs. Moser, and Mr. Howell. Specific courses: General Business, Typing I,II,III,IV, Shorthand I,II, Shorthand and Transcription, Sales and Law, Office Prac- tice C Business Machinesj Notehand and Per- sonal Typing. lwtlw Business Dep -'Business as Usual' Senior Joy Yackley uses an adding machine for her class assignment in office practice class. The Social Studies Department is characterized by the team teaching instructional approach. Courses are planned for all grade levels. Fresh- men enter the high school world of social studies via guidance and citizenship. VVorld history and world geography are offered to sophomores. The required United States history' course is given in the junior year and the seniors study psychology and sociology in addition to the required govern- ment and economics courses. Mr. Paul Schmucker, chairman of the department, predicts even greater expansion in the near fu- ture. He is assisted in the department by Mr. Bolen, Mr. Cierzniak, Miss Cox, Mr. Hurst, Mr. Musil, Mr, Phillips, Mr. Quimby, Mr. Slater, and Mr. Ward. In addition to the regular staff Stanley, Adsit, Marilyn Hatton, Kathleen O'Neal, Paul Hutchins, and Art Smoker worked and taught in the department as student teachers. To be eligible for the annual social studies award given on senior achievement day a student must have at least eight credits in social studies. This includes the two courses taught via team teaching, United States History and government. Social Studies Department SchmuckerQXVorld History Bolen-Economics Cierzniak-United States History Cox-Geography and Social Studies Hurst-government-psychology-sociology Musil-guidance-citizenship-sociology Above-Mr. Hurst assists a trio of seniors in a sociology class. Phillips-economics-government Miss Cox uses the map to advantage in her geography class. Quimby-United States History A guidance class taught by Mr Musil enjoys a practical experiment. Slater-United States History Freshman social studies teacher Ward checks a student term paper. Ward-Freshman Social Studies : Q : Q 1 E Y I P Q E P Mr. Slater, a team teacher in United States history, uses the in- formal discussion group following a Civil War lecture. In this group are juniors Jackie Gerstbauer, Dan Gardner, and Mike Ford. Mr. Paul Schmucker, chairman of the social studies de- partment, discusses a world history report with seniors Susan Schalliol and Barbara Rumpf.
