Cross Country Coach Oskar Schock. 1 A Test 0fErza'urance The old telephone road behind the school was the training grounds for the Peninsula Highys cross country team. Over rocks, mud puddles, blackberry bushes, hills and ravines, the objective was to rung to run far and hard. Unlike most of the running competition, cross country is purely a test of will power and endurance. Under the coaching of Mr. Shock, the team turned out everyday and ran several miles. Although they lost to most of the teams in the Seamont League, the spirit of the competition consisted of good clean sportsmanship. Richard Tatton and Keith Williams proved to have the most poten- tial of the seven-man team, as they led the team to victory over Be- thel in the Hrst match ofthe season. 80

' Wm' . .A, - --,Q M-1 Rytle Club Set Its Sites High Club officers Steve Blanchard, Dave Hagen, and Dan Dower. Aiming high, the rifle club organized and put in many hours of practice. By changing their headquarters from the wood-working shop in the industrial arts building to the back room of the renovated bus maintenance build- ing, the club members had more room and didn,t have to move anything around before they began their prac- tice. The terrific expense ofthe equipment was provided by the club. Ammunition alone cost from S5 to S20 per per- son, or about S400 for the entire club. Running from October to May, the club ollicers - Steve Blanchard, president, Dave Hagen, secretary, and Dan Dower, treasurer - had a long term and an active one. The ten best shooters were chosen from the club to make up the varsity team, which practiced on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Other club members were free to prac- tice on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Their advisor was Mr. Hillard Beller, who kept the club moving and handled the business end of things. Peninsulals 1967-68 RiHe Club.
