A new class time schedule was established and operated on a rotating system, which added a new variety to the school year. Two new faces were also added to the faculty, Mr. Milton Boyd and Mr. Tor johannessen. The school board held meetings and worked hard to help acquire needed materials for our school. Due to the tragic death of Mr. Don Polworth, a highly respected and liked person in the community and a newly elected member of the school board, Mr. Ray Payne was appointed to the active board consisting of Mr. Hollis Small, Mr. james Widrig, Mr. Helenes Frei- berger, and Mr. Loren Murray. This year, through the efforts of Mr. Iverson Cozort and the oflice of Ex- tended Education, a Reality Therapy Workshop was held forthe teachers in the district. Dr. William Glasser, a Professor at U.C.L.A., spoke on the new innovations for teaching students to think. One of his suggestions was the possibility of a non-grading system. To others it means education, a privilege to enjoy afreedom so many ofus take for granted. ! Active Council 0vernedSlua'ent Body i Seated: lake Rice, Kris Allen, jim Wright, Vivian Spadoni, Marg Smith, jim Miller, and Pat Lyle. Standing: Mike Veitenhans and Randy Babich. Student Council and their advisor discussed current school business Student Council members were kept busy reorganiz- ing and improving student life. Under the leadership of A.S.B. President Randy Ba- bich, and the new faculty advisor, Mr. Cary Stainbrook, the Council met in the student lounge and acted as a sounding board for many new student ideas. After thorough discussions, the ten member group ini- tiated a new letter system for the lettermen, purchased a new IBM-Selectotype for paper staff, and bought the new apple machine. They also changed the Constitution to allow the Editor-in-Chief of the Outlook to attend meetings in order to improve communications between Student Council and the Student Body. In addition, the regular duties of selling activity cards, handling the door-decorating contest, selecting national assemblies, and selling candy were carefully attended to. For the Hrst time in the league, an all new inner-high council was formed. This group consisted of a Student Council member and a representative from the various schools in the league, and was created to improve com- munications between the schools. Mike Heads Senate Senate took on a new face this year as it became the oflicial group for constructive criticismf, Along with a new purpose, it also acquired a new advisor, Mr. Warren McNee1y. Senateis main job this year was to answer questions brought up by various student groups, and try to rectify any complaints. In order to accomplish this, joint meet- ings were sometimes held with Student Council. Through these efforts, closer ties were established be- tween the Council, the representatives, and the roll- room members. Many thankless jobs were often left to be handled by the Senate members. It was their duty 'to set up .chairs for assemblies, try to keep honor study halls in order, and see that back to school night ran smoothly. Like other organized groups, Senate had its officers. Chris Sather was elected secretary and Doug Johnson was elected vice-chairman. Mike Veitenhans, ASB Vice- President, assumed the duties of chairman and directed Senate toward a prosperous year. Disappearing on the second Wednesday of every month the intellectual cream-of-the-crop congregated in room forty-six for Torch Club meetings, The members of this club all have a grade point average of three point or above. K President Steve Hall presided over the meetings with Mr. Velez as the well-informed advisor ofthe group. Keeping educationally busy this group did not partici- pate in as many activities as others. However, when an event was planned it was an event to remember. Some of these events were: a Torch banquet, in which the whole club went to a restaur- ant and dined, a school dance, sponsored by Torch, and initiation for the mem- bers. The peak in importance of activities was the student day, which was ajoint operation involving the Torch Club and F.T.A. This was a day when the students took over the school. Signing up for the classes that each student felt he could handle. This list was given to the faculty, and student teachers were chosen. While the school went to the students, the teachers had meetings on school cirricu- lum. Mr. Velez and the OH'icers Steve Hall conducts a meeting, F.H.A. OFFICERS: Kathy Spadoni, Theresa Malich, Marlene Brones, Linda Perrish, Karen Olson, Denise Schillinger, FHA and FTA Diana Mosiman, Kathy Spadoni, and Sharon Tomlinson. FHA was organized a little differently this year. In past years, the girls who were enthusiastic and came to each activity day meeting became members of the club. This year, all the girls in any Home Economics class are members of the club whether or not an active particpa- tion is shown in the meetings. To raise money, the officers and members, under the leadership of Marlene Brones, sold apples at the begin- ning ofthe year for those students who stayed after school. In the tradition of past years, FHA members went to the Regional Meeting in the fall and to Recognition Day in the spring. The meetings proved to be worth while, so in addition to these, the club also sent two girls to the State Meetings. l Work towards a better tomorrow It was a rare day in the 1967-68 school year that FTA president, janet Henry, or vice-president, Diana Bretsen couldn,t be seen slaying over some project on FTA. These students along with others such as secretary, Mar- cia Smith, treasurer, jeH Rothwieler, and activity chair- man, Rae Armstrong, spent many hours preparing for the many activities that the club originated and partici- pated in. The money raising projects during the year were not only interesting, but also profitable. Selling windbreakers, for instance, and selling pictures of the students on Santa's knee, showed the extent of imagina- tion and initiative that the club possessed. Illustrating the just plain funn that the members of this club enjoyed was the Christmas Party at the house of the club's advisor, Mrs. Ruth Crook. The object of the party was to trim a Christmas Tree, but after that was done, the evening was spent in games and enjoyment. Being an educational club originally, the club lives up to its tradition by sponsoring a tutoring service, helping with student day, and granting a one hundred dollar scholarship to a deserving senior. Among the other events were a senior party, a field trip, and a membership banquet. jackie Woolard and Sandy Smith sell Chris McKinney a windbreaker F.T.A. Letlermen devote time and energy Lettermens club president jim Wright. Willing to lend a helping hand, the lettermen's club, made up of everyone receiving a letter in any sport, re- newed from last year their pledge of assistance in the recovery project of Tommy Borgert. Tommy was born with brain damage but with special theraputic exercises, recovery is possible. The Lettermen participate every weekday morning in hour long sessions and twice weekly in the afternoon. As this project took most of the lettermenis time, the club had little time for other activities. They had a metal drive, however, to raise money for a new whirl pool bath, which speeds the recovery of pulled muscles from three weeks to three days. February the ninth was the date of the annual letter- men-faculty basketball Game. The highlight of the year came when the new letter- men were initiated into the club. This rather messy event happened after football season was over and in- cluded everything from wearing their clothes backwards all day and having an eloquent dinner of raw gold fish, raw oysters, and raw eggs, not to mention the haircream that was made from molasses. With the OFFICERS: jerry Faker, jake Rice and Ralph Brindly. oys Club has cz busy year help of enthusiastic leaders, Jake Rice, jerry Faker and Ralph Brindly, and advisor, Mr. Witt, the Boy,s Club entered into many activities during the year. Girls Athletic Association, better known as GAA, par- ticipated in an energetic season this year. Meeting for their activities on Mondays after school, president Kathy Spadoni, vice-president Helen Knickerbocker, sec.-treas. Linda Larson, and sports mang. Carol Olson, with Mrs. Norma Martin, planned out the entire agenda for the year. The schedule was set up on a quarterly basis, starting with football, and including soccer, archery, basketball, bowling, table tennis, badminton, volleyball, softball, and tennis. The membership was made of those students who wished to earn a letter or just plain have fun. Because of the enthusiastic leadership of its president, the club doubled its membership. To honor the letter winners, GAA planned a picnic at the home of Anita McCabe in the spring. 32 basketball e0urt,' cheerleaders, majorettes and the drill team entertained habf-time From the muddy foatballjield to the crowds with a variety m ofrou tines. Drill Team and S eachick Footwork is important. Setting the pace for Peninsulals entertainment, the Drill Team put on many intricate half-time shows for enthusiastic crowds of spectators at the football and bas- ketball games. Under the advisement of Mr. Bruce Brummond, many hours of hard work resulted in the success of the rhythmical body and group maneuvers. In order to learn routines in such a large group, four drill captains took over the show at first. These captains, Janet Henry, Jolene Fraychineaud, Jorja Peterson, and Judy Nieman, had to learn the routines thoroughly and there- fore put in extra hours of their time. One of the great achievements of the group was marching for Peninsula's homecoming. The conditions were miserable with a steady downpour but the team did such a good job that they also performed for the league championship game at Fife. Being successful there also, the team was olf to an excellent start. Cirlis Club, a tradition of Peninsula High School was very active this year. This club consisted of the entire female population of Pen High. Leading this large group of girls was its president, Kris Allen. With such a large club it would seem almost impossible to ac- complish anything but nevertheless it did. For example, a canned food drive was sponsored by the Cirl's Club at Christmas for the benefit of needy fam- ilies. One of the main duties of the Girlis Club was to introduce new students, frosh and transfers, into Peninsula High. The performance of task was begun with a slumber party in the gymnasium, where a movie was shown and as usual no one got any sleep. The Girls Club sponsored the Homecoming dance, a light show. HA PPINESS IS The Girl S'HappinessD was the best way to describe the tolo ac- tivities organized by Marianne Guasta and Donna Kelly. Happiness began with dress alike, and a Hhushu button contest with Al Ross becoming Mr. irresistable. A dating game, a rooster crowing contest and a musi- cal skit presented by the faculty, all contributed to the successfulness ofthe tolo assembly directed by jane Cooper and Marcia Smith. The days activities were completed with the traditional tolo dance and crowning ofthe royalty. Happiness is a Tolo. This year more than ever, the oflicers and representatives Worked more closely with the mothers who devoted so much of their time to make this project a success. By coordinating their efforts, two successful dances were held at the be- ginning andthe end ofthe school year. President jane Cooper and officers Mike Heckart, Vicki Giles, and Claudia Wade also initiated several fun projects this year. To liven up the halls at school during the Christmas season, candy canes were sold by the many energetic representatives chosen from each class. Then in February SFA made it possible to send special telegrams for Valentines Day. The traditional big money making project was under- taken in the spring as members worked hard to sell radio ads, and the presentation of these over a local radio sta- tion proved to be exciting for all of those who participat- ed. Berend Bruns, this year's representative, from Peter Peterson School in Germany, proved to be an interesting person to know. He took an active part in student life and enjoyed performing with the Pen High Choir. He also proved to be a very capable student in his junior classes. Sprechen sie Deutsch Oder Opening up the traditionally lively German Club events of the year was the Oktoberfest. Entering into this evening of fun, the German classes performed skits and later everyone sang songs led by Patty and Becky Craig. Next came the German Club Party, which was held at the Packard Home, where Berend Bruns established resi- dence while attending the first semester of Peninsula High School. The German Club's annual Spring Beach Party ended the year's festivities. Chris Sather, this year's German Club president, su- pervised the majority of the planning with his officers, but the members, who are made up of all the students of German classes really made the club successful. GERMAN CLUB OFFICERS: Advisor, Miss Kunsing, Dave Lepan non, Chris Sather, Gorja Peterson, Berend Bruns, George Williams. Habla Espanol? Eugenio Gomez became the target project for the Spanish Club under the leadership of Scott Chunn, its president. The project consisted of adopting, a child of another country and sending him the essentials of life. As far as activities are concerned, the Spanish Club began the year with a banquet at the new Brad's smor- gasbord. Entering into the Christmas season with the right spir- it, the Spanish Club sent a record and a card to Sherri Perkins at Seattle, and as a money making project the club sold Christmas cards and candles. A Spanish Club exchange program has been the hope of every Spanish Club since it was formed, but this yearis club has made the most progression toward it. A Mexico exchange Program was started last year on a voluntary basis, and the participants came back this year and showed slides of their trip. It was a complete success. Red Cross, A Traditionally Helpful Club Red Cross is a service club at Peninsula High. Under the direction of Marlene Ketner and Mr. David james, advisor, projects were carried out to help those in need of friendship. Officers like Marg Smith, Kathy Spadoni, and Kathy Baldwin, put in long hours to make this or- ganization a success, and bring more happiness to the lives of many lonely people at Madigan Hospital. Chair- man, Pat Iohnston saw to it that every month party boxes were sent to the boys there to help entertain them. The annual Red Cross Assembly was again held in November with the Senior skit coming out on top. A fea- tured presentation by the P.U. choir was a great success and gave the Class of '68 its second win in a row. Helping those in need was a large job to tackle, but Red Cross came through and took pride in sending their greeting boxes overseas. They planned out an active year, and settled down to do their share in helping the less fortunate. Attending the training course sponsored by Red Cross were Marg Smith, David Leppanen, Priscilla Hill, Pat Johnston, seen here talking with president Marlene Ketner. Debate advisor, Mrs. Verna Todd. The 1967-68 Debate Team was comprised of a select group of students who held an interest in intellectual competition. Their topic this year, Resolved: That Con- gress should establish uniform regulation to control criminal investigation procedures, was thoroughly cov- ered by the team members and their advisor, Mrs. Verna Todd. The teamls knowledge of this current subject, and their ability to express this knowledge, showed up at the December meet at St. Martins, when out of 23 represent- ed schools, Scott Aspman took first place in oratory events, and Carl Ash and Scott Aspman, as debate col- leagues, took fourth place in debate. Being a fairly young team with a lot of talent and ex- perience, this yearis record was extremely impressive and left high hopes for next yearls team. The Outlook Keeps the Student Body Editor jack Merry. The most publicized group in Peninsula High School is the paper staff. This fact remains true for one reason, that is that every other Friday of the school year, except during vacations, the stall edits a paper containing the happenings around the school. Some new developments have accurred in the 67-68 paper stall, however, that were important and interest- ing to the student body. With jack Merry as editor-in- chief, and Patti Culver as associate editor, things began to pop. For instance, it was ruled by the Student Council that the paper staff would become an ex facio member of the Student council so there would be a closer communi- cation between the student body and the council. Copy editor, Libby Seifert became correspondent to the Bremerton Sun this year and brought Teen Beat to the students of Peninsula. This teenage paper contained new and up to date articals that were especially impor- tant to the present generation. Ve!! informed Jack attends Student Council meetings to report what is happening Paper Staif often works long hours to meet deadlines. 47 ANNUAL STAFF: Terri Helbig, Libby Smoot, Brooke Taylor, jane Cooper, Teresa Burgett. Associate Editor jeff Rothweiler, The 48 Yearbook is Created Under the leadership of Editor Dale Neel and Advisor Mr. Stephen Tellari, annual staff worked hard to create a book that would clearly present a history of the school year. Starting OH the year was the annual Publications Con- ference at the University of Washington. Those who at- tended met in classes and learned what to look for in judging a good annual. just before its first deadline, the annual staff learned the value of time and the drawbacks of procrastination. However, with U Freedomu as the theme for the '68 Kwahaes, last minute interviews were made by the copy department, while the top photographer and associate editor, jeff Rothweiler, was busy taking needed pictures for the various layouts. All in all, everyone put in many hours of hard work but they also received a lot of fond memories to look back on and remember. Caution: Men Working Diana and Marsha Type. Every day it gurgled and went on and oH at the hands of the concessionaires. The money taken in by the sale of the cones, shakes, drumsticks, and ice cream sandwiches, was put into the A.S.B. fund. The student concessions were supervised by Mr. Co- zort, who was the trouble-shooter if anything went wrong. His job, however, became a little easier because of this year,s improved student attitude toward the pro- ject. And then came the thankless task of clean-up. This messy job fell into the hands of Mrs. Day and Ray Fezler who gave up their time just as the concessionaires to do a favor forthe benefit ofthe student body. Librarians Because of the failure to pass the bond issue, library assistants were forced to do their various jobs Within a limited amount of space. The most active area was the work room in the back of the library. Here books for the entire district were sort- ed, numbered, and stamped. A new addition to the magazine room and the library itself Was the microfilm. All back issues of magazines were transferred onto microfilm and made available to the students through the use of the special viewing ma- chine. All of these various materials within the library were made possible through the eHorts of the head librarian, Mr. Burl Knickerbocker. Peninsulals greatest effort was put forth as the Sea- hawks battled against the Bethel Braves. This 21-0 win clinched the Mount Division Championship of the Sea- mount League. . The highlight of the football season, and one of the most important events on the 67-68 calendar, came when the Seahawks traveled to Sumner to meet the Fife Trojans. Before a crowd of 4,500 people, a strong Penin- sula team gave Fife their hardest game, but was defeated by a score of 21-6. Over rocks, mud puddles, blackberry bushes, hills and ravines, the objective was to rung to run far and hard. Unlike most of the running competition, cross country is purely a test of will power and endurance. Under the coaching of Mr. Shock, the team turned out everyday and ran several miles. Although they lost to most of the teams in the Seamont League, the spirit of the competition consisted of good clean sportsmanship. Richard Tatton and Keith Williams proved to have the most poten- tial of the seven-man team, as they led the team to victory over Be- thel in the Hrst match ofthe season. 80 ' Wm' . .A, - --,Q M-1 Rytle Club Set Its Sites High Club officers Steve Blanchard, Dave Hagen, and Dan Dower. The terrific expense ofthe equipment was provided by the club. Ammunition alone cost from S5 to S20 per per- son, or about S400 for the entire club. Running from October to May, the club ollicers - Steve Blanchard, president, Dave Hagen, secretary, and Dan Dower, treasurer - had a long term and an active one. The ten best shooters were chosen from the club to make up the varsity team, which practiced on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Other club members were free to prac- tice on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Donna Waterland, the choir sec- retary, took roll every day and treasurer, Wendy Throck- morton, handled the hundreds of dollars that came in from concerts, and special activities such as the annual spaghetti dinner. Sour notes and irritated students molded themselves into a successful and good- sounding band. From an uncoordinated green mob to a precision marching group, these musical Seahawks won their fame in the DaHodil and the Rhododendron pa- rades. Spurring the Seahawkis athletic activities, the Band played for all of the home games and the many pep as- smblies during the year. On the cultural side of the musical events of the year, the Pen High Band participated in the two traditionally magniiicent concerts: the Pop Concert and the Spring Concert. Excitement was brewing in the music department because this year was the first time in Peninsulals history that it hosted the annual Band Festival. This contest of talent brought about a lot of excitement and a lot of hard work. Director Mr. Brummond hard at work. V The Freshmen at Peninsula had one major task to complete during their first year here. It was their job to take notice of the upperclassmen. They watched actions and formed opinions as to what their policies would be when they took over the job of leading the school. Those who have already experienced leadership were the Frosh officers. They were Jim Miller, president, Rick Jensen, vice-president, Becky Finholm, secretaryg and Mark Metsker, treasurer. Like everyone else, Freshmen became involved in school life. They joined clubs, played sports, and elected their own royalty. They had fun and learned at the same time. With the help of their advisors, Mrs. Fride Jerstad and Mr. Manuel Velez, the Class of '71 also completed their traditional duty of decorating for Baccalaureate. i ,. , i'.'5!5v'?12sE:,, Zi ,1,E22f5..., ., I l :':f1:f3ii 2352 Ziif -E:.i:?:1 eaI1. :5f?l:' 1 - .2:.fzgj,5 v- 1222 t i ::.a , na w X H ,, Q 1-:.f,s:i,,Q its .,. f1.,p.w,f.'r:-fri r A- -- - 1. 335 '1 l l ml lv ll J if vm m,'rfS'f r 5 gil F ,ll ..., Ell .a.E..ff.::,a. -.3 My 5 f - l f ya I E at i 1 si! 9 ax-Effie: S u mrtflsixeis ig x 'J 11' 11 lu ' ll K t wif, .1 Y km fl :ll . - 1 :1.g,ly.sfzgsi1g:.f- V 4 528522 . . . we M. Greg Garnet, for instance, earned honors for all the Junior class by being selected the All Seamont Quarter- back of the year. Also in the class of ,69 were Vicki De- walt and Cindy McGugin, who were chosen as Varsity cheerleaders by the student body. The third year of high school is a year of discovery. A year in which students realize the importance of life and the responsibilites that accompany it. This is the year when teenagers become aware that soon they will be making decisions that will affect the rest of their lives. A Having an active interest extra events, music, sports, and participant clubs are patronized by this age group more than before, and school becomes a way of life that was never really understood in preceding years. In short the junior year is a year of transformation. ala? ' fi? , i a . , ' . Seniors showed their authority. They led the school, not only in student government and clubs, but in sports, assemblies, and other happenings around school. Guiding the seniors were jim Wright, president, jay Seniors Reflect on The Senior Class began the 67-68 school year with a change in attitudes. It was their final year, a year to prove themselves to teachers and friends. Next year the big transition would come, the change from high school to a new life in a variety of ways. But most students were ready. Their four years of activities here at Peninsula gave them a strong foundation for the step into the world outside. Feelings were mixed, friendships became stronger while others faded away, and few in the Class of '68 would ever forget the projects completed as a group. First came the junior Prom, then the Senior Ball, and all of the other events in which this active group participat- ed. Watland, vice-president, Shirley Dadisman, secretary, and Marcia Smith, treasurer. Class advisors were Mr. Ernest Miller and Mrs. Patricia Black. May came and brought with it the preparation for that final event . . . Graduation on May 31. Some faced it with hesitation, while others were eager to complete their time here. Reflections of the past 12 years brought back both joy and sadness. It was a time to again set down hopes, ideals, and dreams. The future was handed to the Graduates, and the decision was now theirs.
