THE VARSITY The 1983-'84 Varsity Cheer- leaders started the year out early. Preparing for camp at Meredith College was very hard and frus- trating. Practices were held once a week throughout the summer and two or three times a week before camp. Each day at camp began with a good breakfast followed by an ex- ercise and learning session in the gym. They learned cheers, chants, routines, and attended clinics dur- ing this time. In the afternoon, they practiced for evaluations each night. Due to so many squads in the gym, heat became intense and people began fainting and hyperventilating. On the third night, so many girls fainted that camp was called off for the night. On the final two days, the run-offs were held and spirit sticks and ribbons were awarded. Even though they didn't make it to the run-offs, P.A.'s hard work was evident since we were one of twenty-five squads to bring home a spirit stick. At the beginning of the school year, the Cheerleaders put up posters and practiced cheers for football. Other activities included: preparing for Homecoming week, having pep rallies each week, making doo-dads for the play- ers and drawing run-thru's for the games. Cheering involves alot of duties and responsibilities and these Varsity Cheerleaders did a fine job!
