However, the faculty may disagree consid- erably because students have concentrated more on sports and activities rather than aca- demics. Nevertheless, the teachers were interested and worked hard to help the stu- dents more and gave them a fair chance to bring up their grades. They enjoyed a 9-3 conference re- cord and a 13-7 regular season re- cord. The Boys cruised to many lop- sided victories throughout the sea- son and gained momentum during the Christmas tournaments. De- feats were suffered only to the infa- mous Cape Fear Academy and Har- rells. Due to a heart-breaking loss in the closing seconds at Harrells, the Raiders placed third in the con- ference behind the two rivals. After the loss, the Raiders came together and smashed the opposition in their final three regular season games. New-comer Stewart Hobbs coached the Raiders through a fine season. The girls cheered for the Jr. High Girls, Jr. High Boys, J.V. Boys, and some of the Varsity Girls games. Even though there were only seven Cheerleaders, they showed a great deal of enthusiasm and school spirit. The J.V.'s made doo-dads for the players and hung posters in the gym. They cheered at the Homecoming game, which was a new and exciting ex- perience for some of the girls. Mrs. Schutt, their advisor, treat- ed them to a Christmas party at the Pizza Hut . Preparing for camp at Meredith College was very hard and frus- trating. Practices were held once a week throughout the summer and two or three times a week before camp. Each day at camp began with a good breakfast followed by an ex- ercise and learning session in the gym. They learned cheers, chants, routines, and attended clinics dur- ing this time. In the afternoon, they practiced for evaluations each night. Due to so many squads in the gym, heat became intense and people began fainting and hyperventilating. On the third night, so many girls fainted that camp was called off for the night. On the final two days, the run-offs were held and spirit sticks and ribbons were awarded. Even though they didn't make it to the run-offs, P.A.'s hard work was evident since we were one of twenty-five squads to bring home a spirit stick. At the beginning of the school year, the Cheerleaders put up posters and practiced cheers for football. Other activities included: preparing for Homecoming week, having pep rallies each week, making doo-dads for the play- ers and drawing run-thru's for the games. Cheering involves alot of duties and responsibilities and these Varsity Cheerleaders did a fine job!
