Since our entrance into P.A.H.S. she has proved most understanding and friendly. Her willingness to help us start on our journey led us to put faith in ourselves and never fear an oncoming task. She is willing to lend a hand when-ever or where-ever it is needed. Due to her patience and knowledge our library is under the best possible direction. It is, therefore, not surprising that we dedicate this volume to Miss GRACE E. D1zNNIs--''Pew-.rmmlify Pflljlu 3 Q1 fmzz Jlfafer Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains Beneath the azure sky Rests our noble Alma Mater Rests Pen Argyl High. Her lofty tower of shining white Amid the hills of green Stands a stalwart sentinel That ever can be seen. In her spacious halls of learning Let our memories roam For there is no greater treasure By immortals known. We will always love and praise you Green and White our cry Hail to thee Our Alma Mater Hail Pen Argyl High. Trzbzzfe This year, 1949, marks not only the graduation of another class from Pen Argyl High School, but also the retirement of one of its faculty members. In her years of teaching, her understanding and cooperative personality, as well as her instructive abilities, have etched their way deeply into our hearts. It is only fitting and proper, therefore, that we, the class of 1949, pay tribute to Miss Daisy V. Shannon, as a token of our appreciation and remembrance. 5 dfllflyf Buck Rou'7Left to Right- HAROLD L. MILLERF-Business FRED W. LEONARD-Science. Drivcr Training. Harding 17 Class Poem u '- ,I .. E .J-D! The Trail Wondering what we would find on this day, Climbing the hill all agog-on our way! Bustling along with a grin and a shout, XX'e were the seventh grade, just starting out. Learning the building was our first big chore Look into this door. then wander some more. Turn 'round a corner, curious of face, Gradually learning the run of the place. Finally settled. we started the grind, Pushing our pencils and trying to find Ways to ease off on the work to be done, Things that would help us to have some more fun. Time then went by like an old local train, One moment slowly, but then what a gain! Stretches of smooth track went gliding along. Mingled with bumps when-e'er something went wrong. Dances and sports gave us loads of good fun, Hardworking teachers, repeating their puns, Tried to make lighter the load that we bore, Stripped all the problems right down to the core. XX'e made new friends just as soon as we found Fellows from other towns joining the crowd. Going all together we worked toward our goal, Solving, creating and filling our role. Interest went to activities. clubs, Hobbies and work proved that we were not dubs. Following the trail we went on our way. Climbing the ladder a step every day. Rushing along through the seasons we went, Chasing, pursuing a scholarly bent. Gradually nearing the end of the line. With all our senses keyed up to the time, Vlfhen off! to the world all around us we'd fly, Wforking at this joh, and wondering why XX'e hadn't taken up some other course, Believing in innocence naught could be worse. Looking back fondly on days we had passed Vfith all the friends we had made in the last Half dozen years we had spent on this earth, All of us living for all we were worth, Vile shan't forget all the fun that we had, Even though sometimes we had to be bad. And mem'ry will never lose sight of that place, Our dear Alma Mater, where started our pace. -Frederick Harding l8 OUR FIRST STEP Class History On a clear, blue morning of September, 45 , we sat in school thinking of the mighty freshmen that we were, dreaming of the days that were to come and of the activities that they held for us. We organized our class under the supervision of Mr. J. B. Lahr. We elected the following olhcers for the year: Preridenl .cc.......,c.... .......,,,,.. F red Kraemer Serrelary ,,,.......,,............ Raymond Hendershot Vice Preridenl ..,,..,,.,,,..,.,,.,,,,.... Stanley Miller Trearzzrer ,..,s...,,,,...,....i.,,,,..,............, Alice Zanette Our only social event of the year was our big dance, The Freshman Hop , held in May. It was a success, enjoyed by all. As we became Sophomores, we were joined by pupils from Wind Gap and West Bangor. After everyone became acquainted, we organized under the guidance of Mr. J. B. Lahr and Mr. Salvatore Mazzeo. We elected the following officers for the year: Prefidenl ..,...............,..,,...,....,,.,. Harry Edwards Secretary ....,..,. . ............,.. Marilyn Brinton Vive President ....,,,,, ,...,,,,,,,...,.. F red Kraemer Trerzrzzrer ...,.,................................. Stanley Miller We immediately ordered our class rings which we received in the early spring. 20 Many Sophomores participated in such school activities as Glee Club, Tri-Hi-Y, Hi-Y, football, and basketball. Everyone attained a better idea of what the future years at P.A.H.S. held for us. We held our Sophomore Hop in the spring, which concluded our activities of the year. As we entered upon our Junior year in school, we immediately organized our class under the able guidance of Mr. Marcus Stopp and Miss Hester Heller. The officers elected were as follows: Preyidenl .,....,,,....,.........., ..,.,.,...... F red Kraemer Sefrezary ....,., ,...,,,,..............,,.,..,.. B ernice Caesar Vice Preridenl ,..........,,,,,., Mary Jane Bettini Treasurer ..........,...,...............,....,... Eileen Kellow We voted and selected as our class motto- Always Forward, Never Backward , class colors Blue and Gray , class flower Yellow Rose . We undertook campaigns to sell Christmas cards and to take subscriptions for magazines in an at- tempt to raise money for our yearbook and social events. In May, the class held the junior Prom in the high school gymnasium, followed in june by the highlight of the year, the Junior Banquet . The banquet was held at Monomonock lnn, in the Poconos. With this we concluded our activities of the junior year and approached our goal as seniors. We returned to school in September to become proud seniors. We embarked on the last lap of our twelve-year journey together under the leadership of the following ofhcers and advisers: Preiiderzl ............,.. ,,.,...,............,, J ohn Pezzuto TI'9tZJ'ZH'61' ...,,.....,,,.,,,,...,,,........,,,......, john Palmer Vice Preriderzl ....,.,,..,,...... Mervine We held two bake sales and two public dances to obtain more money to put into our yearbook. We obtained class pennants, caps and emblems from the Standard Pennant Company. On April 29, we held our last dance, the Senior Prom, followed by the Senior Banquet on May 27. Both events were highly successful. A very active program was on the agenda following last years election of a junior, Harry Oaten, as president, with Rodney Houck, Williaiii Harding, and George lfrancisco as secretary, chaplain, and treasurer, respectively. Ernest Hughes, a senior, rounded out the oliicers as vice-president. The club sold Fritos at noon in the cafeteria, had an activity period in the gym one noon following the induction of new members, and held informal discussions about teen topics during club meetings. At the time of this writing the club was planning the annual Hi-Y-Tri-Hi-Y semi-formal, its annual Sports' Night, a swimming party, and a debate with the Tri-Hi-Y on an issue concerning teen-agers. 32 Lining Under God Preriderzf ,...,,......,,.................,. Various committees were appointed during the year and co-operated with the ofhcers. Among our religious activities were: Homeroom Devotions, Go-to-Church Campaign, Devotions at the P.T.A. Meetings, and the reading of the Bible at club meetings. The Public Benefit Activities included: ushering, caring for children at P.T.A., March of Dimes Campaign, bake sale, and selling milk to the students. Among the social activities were the Alumnae Dance, Swimming, Bowling, Coronation Ball, and the Allentown Rally. Throughout the year the club pledged itself to create, maintain, and extend, throughout the school and community, high standards of Christian Character. T1iHi-Y 33 Band When the band first met, it was at once apparent that our new director, Mr. Behr, was to have quite a job on his hands. Many of the players who reported were entirely inexperienced, but with hard work and co-operation we worked up pleasing displays for all the football games, beginning with Catasauqua. The band took part in two Halloween parades, one at Nazareth and the other at Pen Argyl, and also played at the dedication of West Bangor's new street lights. Although the band got off to a late start in preparing for the Spring Concert, all the members were agreeably surprised at the quality of the music prepared. The concert, given in the High School auditorium, was very successful. The Club had a membership of 66 interested and enthusiastic members. 38 Agriculture Club Among the busy groups of Pen Argyl High School is the newly organized Agriculture Club. Every Thursday a general business meeting is held, followed by discussions, led by club members to whom various assignments have been made. The club has taken trips to various industries in neighboring cities to observe handling of products produced on their farms. They also held an annual farm show and participated in the tree planting project on Arbor Day. The club's study of soil conservation and scientific farming will insure better farm products for the future. Preiidefzl ,..,..,,................ .... ...,. ,............. One of the club's outstanding contributions to school life this year was the inaugurating of a monthly school paper, The Green Echo. The paper facilitated a new experience for the business students in learning about the diversified operations essential in publishing the newspaper. The Business Club's fourth annual Valentine Ball, held on February 12, was again a big success, with the crowning of Virginia Celot as Queen of Hearts. The Queen was attended by the following seniors: Mary Jane Bettini, Palma Catino and Ethel Snyderg and the following juniors: Angeline Abruzzese, Theresa Bruno and Celia Squillaro. Bernice Caesar was crownbearer with Bernadette DePowers and Darlene Rossigno as train- bearers. Mervine, with a fairly well experienced group of boys. September 17 P.A.H.S. 31 WASHINGTON 0 The Green Warriors got off on the right foot by traveling to Washington, N. J. and defeating a much heavier Blue Streak eleven under the arcs. In the initial periods the two teams were evenly matched with Pen Argyl leaving the field at half time leading 6-0, by virtue of a pass from S. Lessig to jory in the end zone. In the third frame, however, the speed and power of the Leonard Lads showed up, Pezzuto scoring twice, once on a 43-yard gallop and again on a 55-yard return of an intercepted pass. Lessig also skirted end to pay dirt. A Lessig heave to Boyle in the last period accounted for the final score with Lessig adding the extra point. September 25 P.A.H.S. 34 EAST STROUDSBURG 7 With already one victory tucked under their belts, a greatly inspired Pen Argyl team moved into East Stroudsburg where their strength was again felt in the later periods. After an early second period score by Pen Argyl on a 30- yard run by Pezzuto, the spirited East 'Burg boys came back to tie it up, only to have Mr. Pezzuto .1 few min- utes later go 66 yards to put P.A.H.S. in the lead 14-7 at the half time. The Green and White again sewed up the verdict in the third stanza with a short plunge by Pezzuto and an intercepted pass by jory. M. Bellis tallied again in the last quarter in which many substitutes saw action. October 2 P.A.H.S. 19 CATASAUQUA 0 The Green Wlave took things in stride by overwhelming Catasauqua 19-0 on the latter's grounds. H. Bellis, P.A. 105-lb. scatback tallied first in the opening period racing 35 yards to pay dirt with Lessig adding the extra point. The referees arms again raised when Lessig raced 40 yards around end and then flipped to Pezzuto in the end stripes. A Pen Argyl recovery of a Brown and White fumble led to the final score. Lessig tossed to lory on the 10, and three plays later H. Bellis scooted over for his second T.D. Neither team threatened in the fourth quar- ter with many reserves seeing some service. October 9 PEN ARGYL 13 STROUDSBURG 0 Pen Argyl High maintained its undefeated status today by romping to a 13-0 triumph over Stroudsburg High. It was Pen Argyl's fourth straight. A near capacity crowd of more than 3,000 saw the rough and tumble affair. Halfbacks J. Pezzuto and B. Minchin accounted for the two touchdowns. The first score came in the second period concluding a 30 yard drive. The score was 6-0 at half time. In the second half the Leonard Lads couldn't score until the fourth period when a sustained drive from Stroudsburg's 47 yard line resulted in a score, with B. Minchin going the last 15 yards. Quarterback Lessig converted for the only extra point. The tough aggregation from the Poconos gained eight hrst- downs while the Green Wave got 14. 44 October 23 P.A.H.S. 25 NAZARETH 26 Over 4.000 thrilled spectators jammed Pen Argyl Memorial Stadium to witness a free-scoring contest as Marlin Roth of Nazareth High School staged one of the most brilliant offensive displays in area history, making it possible to hand the Green Wave their first loss of the season. The lead see-sawed continually throughout the fray with the Argylites trailing 6-0, leading 12-6, trailing 19-12, leading again 25-19, and finally losing out by the slim margin of one extra point. Green and White scoring was accounted for with two touchdowns by Harding, one by Pezzuto and the other by S. Lessig, who also converted for the only extra point. October 30 P.A.H.S. 6 WILSON 12 The heartbreaker jinx seemed to stick to the Green Wave as they journeyed to Wilson, where they suffered their second loss. An undefeated Blue and Gold team was held at deadlock during the first half, but finally broke through the strong Pen Argyl line to score in the third frame. However, the Leonard Lads, showing again their ability to come up off the floor, tied it up in the final period with Pezzuto cracking off tackle for the tally. Then, as the game showed 'every sign of ending in a draw, a. long pass from Kirchgrassner to Woodruff was completed for a Wilson score, even as the gun sounded ending the game. November 6 P.A.H.S. 18 NORTHAMPTON 41 Things began to look up for the Argylites as they took the lead in the initial period from a heavily favored North- ampton team on a short plunge by Harding. However, the Orange and Black came right back, driving for 55 yards and a score putting them in the lead which they never again lost for the remainder of the fray. The Kon- krete Kids' superior weight and speed showed up in the second and third stanzas when they racked up a total of 34 points. In the final quarter the Green and White came through scoring twice, once on a run by Pezzuto and again on a heave from Lessig to jory, while holding the Northampton eleven in check. November 13 P.A.H.S. 25 COPLAY 0 Pen Argyl High School, playing its eighth game of the season, won its fifth game by defeating Coplay by a 25 to 0 score, The first score came early in the tirst period as Pen Argyl took the opening kick-off, continuously drove for- five Hrst downs to the Coplay 7-yard line and fumbled. Coplay on their first play fumbled and Pen Argyl recovered. On the second play Bob Minchin scored from the 2-yard line. The try for the point was wide. The second quarter saw Pen Argyl go over for two scores by S. Lessig, one on a 9-yard run and the other on an acrobatic 55-yard run. The point put Pen Argyl ahead 19-0 at the half. The second half, in which Pen Argyl could score only six points, came on a 30-yard bullet pass from john Pezzuto to Stanley Miller in Coplay's end zone. November 25 P.A.H.S. 9 BANGOR 7 A capacity crowd jammed into the Bangor High stadium to witness the 29th annual Turkey Day classic between Pen Argyl and their Bangor foes. This proved to be the second thrill-packed contest in as many years. The opening kick off was returned by Bangor to the Bangor 21 where they were forced to kick. Minchin returned the ball to the Bangor 45 where Pezzuto skirted end for 40 paces, setting up the score. Successive bucks by Lessig and Bellis brought the ball to the one where Harding crashed over. Knapp added the E.P. The remainder of the first half saw the game played entirely in Bangor territory. Bangor kicked off to begin the second half, and Bellis returned to the Pen Argyl 27 where, on the second play, Bangor recovered a Green and White fumble. Casciano of Bangor carried on six consecutive plays to score for the Maroon. Kneebone's dropkick sailed through the upright to deadlock the score 7 all. Forced to kick early in the last quarter, Lessig sent the ball to coffin corner where it rolled out on the Bangor 1. Evans dropped back to kick. Stauffer, leading the entire Green line, plowed through to block the punt, sending the ball out of the end zone for an automatic safety and the deciding points. So ended a very successful season for the Green Gridders of Pen Argyl, winning 6 while dropping only 5, two of them being by very slim margins. 45 SENIOR DRIBBLERS Basketball Cnarb .,,..,,,,.... .,,..., ,.,....., . , ,v.....,....,.,, F red W, Leonard Cu-Ctzpzlzinr ,... , ,.,,....,,.... Going on to Coplay, the War- riors found themselves really outclassed, losing again by the overwhelming 76-30 count. Returning home, the Green and White entertained East Burg, and after a hard struggle lost out in the latter periods 57-42. Then traveling to South Whitehall, the Leonard Lads split the nets in style, dump- ing the Trojans 40-34, Nazareth and Wilson then handed Pen Argyl consecutive defeats of 33-30 and 41-29, the first being a real thriller until the final minutes. Hitting the road again, the Warriors showed some real talent, but lost to Fountain Hill by the score of 45-30. The last game of the half proved the best when the Green Cagers marched over the hill to down the Maroon of Bangor 44-43 in a heart-throbbing game. Thus ended the first half, Pen Argyl winding up in eighth place. Starting the second half, an improved Green and White team held down Hellertown and Coplay for three periods, but faded out in the linal frame to lose by decisive counts of 53-40 and 55-42. Going on to East 'Burg for a razzle-dazzle game, the Warriors were shaded 37-35. Returning home, an improved South Wlhitehall team got revenge by topping the Green and White 52-42. The War- riors were overwhelmed by Nazareth and W'ilson by 70-45 and 63-33 in the next two games before coming back to home grounds to whip the Fountain Hillers by the convincing 50-41 score. Another thriller with Bangor saw the Maroon winning out after a rough and tough battle, 64-51. This ended the '48-'49 Basketball season, with Pen Argyl recording 3 wins and 13 losses and a ninth place berth in the Lehigh-Northampton County League standings. J L . .
