We look with fond amazement Upon this place of learning, But little did we think that soon For this we would be yearning. Once that we were settled Our high school days flew by, And soon found we were seniors In this, Pen Argyl High. We had our nice activities All through our high school daysg Then came our end of High School, The parting of our ways. And now we're outside looking in: Our school days we do lack. To us who wanted them to end, Seems strange when we look back. We never seemed to care so muchg It may be the hand of fate That causes us to realize After it's too late. But days slipped by so fast in school, It really has us reeling To know that we will ne'cr go back: It leaves an empty feeling. We've bragged and boasted, scorned and laughed At this treasure 'neath the mounts. It seems that we will never learn It's when you're there that counts. We've done our share of mischief As those who came before, And now it's done it hurts to feel We can do that no more. You say, I should have studiedg I didn't give my best. You pray to our Dear Lord above To help you pass the test. Maybe up in Heaven, In the sweet bye and bye, We will proudly say to you, Farewell Pen Argyl High. By GARY YVILLIAMS The Debs . V Q I LA . Pace 38 Class Prophecy It is a brilliant moonlight night in May, an appropriate setting for the senior prom, one of the main highlights of the high school career. Entering the gym we find that it has been elaborately decorated. A huge balloon, which is constantly changing colors, is suspended from the center of the ceiling and attracts much attention. Some say it has been placed there in connection with a physics experiment by the scientific-minded seniors, but whatever its purpose, it proved an effective centerpiece for the decorations. The dancing couples had just begun to glide across the floor to the soft, sweet strains of XVoody Herman's orchestra, when the balloon suddenly burst, showering silvery fragments on the starry-eyed group. For a few moments the scenery took on a magnificent appearance, but when at last the shining particles ceased to fall, a decided change had come over the entire atmosphere. A glance at the orchestra shows us that Donald Stopp, whose fame rests on the latest developments in squeakless clarinets, has taken full leadership. In the saxophone section we find expert musical talent in Duane Walck and Carrie Ella Houck, both honorary grads of Professor Dale Hockin's Institute of jazz Technology. At the piano Grace Lobb is combining T chaikovsky's Symphony in E Minor with Hamp's Boogie Woogie for an excellent improvement in the musical field. In the trumpet spotlight is that inseparable team, Anona Serfass and Thomas Waters, both having gained their fame in a new blues technique. Gene Krupa's own image is reflected in Drew Matlock, brilliant newcomer to the percussion world. However, the orchestra would not be complete without the steady beat of the bass fiddle-in this case being skillfully handled by Tom Parry, -lr. Looking toward the mike in hope of seeing Frank Sinatra and jo Stafford in a vocal duet, we are thrown into utter amazement at the appearance of Gary Crooner Williams and Mary Sullivan. Our gazes turn in unison toward the door where debutante Rita Trayes and her handsome baron escort, Murray Gross, are making their grand entrance. Greeting them at the door are the chaperons: Richard Dean Lobb, Principal of P. A. H. S., Angelo Roberti, Professor of Psychology, Miss Marjorie Cesare, Home Economics teacher, and Miss Shirley Broad, Proctor of Elocution. In a 'itterbu s' haven are the knock-kneed 'ivers, Keith Nichols and Marian x J S , J , Look. Also getting in the groove are the hep-cats, John Kemmerer and Lois Pin, contenders for the national jitterbug championship. In a farther corner of the gym, Lester Snyder and Donald Kemmerer are engrossed so deeply in a inochle ame that the observe none of the commotion that is takin lace Pb I g Y g P a out tiem. Having decided that a walk into the bright starry night would add variety to the activities of the evening, we left the gay dancers, and proceeded into the night. It was not much of a surprise to Bud that Pen Argyl, a thriving metropolis, was dotted with skyscrapers, gleaming with lights, and humming with traffic. At the intersection of Laurel and Robinson Avenues a mammoth edilice had been erected in which recreational activities were carried on. At the swim- ming pool, instructress Elaine Edwards was displaying remarkable patience with pupils Romayne Bonney and Betty Parsons. In the bowling alley are those ardent bowling fans, Betty Keat and Lucille Charron, both of whom are now rolling games of 90 or better. Not far distant jack Miller and Vic Cesare, former representatives to Con- gress, are enthusiastically indulging in a game of ping pong. However, this sports arena would not be complete without a game of tiddly-winks, the happy par- ticipants being Ruth Evans and .leanne Murphy. As we are about to leave the building we hear the well-known voice of the news commentator, Dick Datesman, coming from a radio in the ante room. The Communique ran as follows: The Army has just accepted Fred Doney's new wing- less airplane, entirely operated by radar control. The official data was being put on record by Chief of Stal'f's private secretary, Betty Compton. Another an- nouncement of great importance was the launching of the new presidential cruiser, Queen Pen Argyle. The honored christener was the first lady of the land, Grace Martin Van Gremlin, whose misjudged swing of the champagne bottle unintentionally struck Chief justice of the Supreme Court, Robert Wil- liams. The incident was so unexpected that William Broad, Secretary of Navy, was thrown into a complete state of nervous disorder. He was given prompt treatment by Lieutenant Betty Bozoti, United States Naval Nurse. Leaving the building and proceeding down Robinson Avenue, we came in sight of a large sportswear store, owned and operated by Fred Male. In the win- dow was a large display of a new creation in ladies' boxing gloves, designed by Madame Lenora Zanchettin. Inside we found Norman Fedon, former All- American Football star, handing out autographed pictures with each purchase of his new plastic football. Shifting our gaze toward the flickering lights of the Liberty theatre we see that the all-around charm boy, Blaine Strunk, has taken the place of the once powerful Van johnson. Co-starring in the best picture of the year is Lucy De Berardinis, Broadway's duplication of Gene Tierney. We are informed by mounted policeman, Arthur Catino, that the theatre has been enlarged and designed more sumptuously by contractor jimmy Guthrie. The successful man- agement is handled by Weston Marsh, who makes the atmosphere more encour- aging by employing Anna Abruzzese, Eleanor Amy and Clementine Armelin as usherettes. Opposite the theatre is the large fruit and vegetable market, operating under the name of Bill's Frozen Food Lockers, which leads us to the conclusion that its proprietor is VVilliam Meyers. Stopping to browse around we find that Lena Graziano is chief cashier and finds her work very enjoyable, then too we see that Betty Lugg is general sales manager with congenial Hope Davies as her assistant. Traveling farther west, on Pennsylvania Avenue, we come to the old Mc- Kinley School Building, which has also become a prominent institution. By request of Mayor Richard Schaffer, the name has been changed to University ol' Pen Argyl. In the University Library, Elaine Hill, librarian, asks us to main- tain absolute silence as the mathematics teacher, Gloria Shook, together with her ardent student, janet johnson, is writing a simplified and modernized ver- sion of solid geometry, so as to meet the needs of present day students. However, this solitude does not exist in the gym, where Mary Coscia, the physical educa- tion instructress, is trying to restrain the giggling of a group of girls long enough to teach them the fundamental principles of gymnastics. We learn from the secre- tary, Ruth Smickley, that Marilyn Shipman has just been appointed as an adviser for the school debating society. PAGE 39 PAM: 40 Leaving the school we do not proceed very far when we note a new hospital has been added to Pen Argyl's medical facilities. Its prosperous director is Dr. William Lesh, whose 101 surgical uses for the can opener have made him a Hgure of national recognition. Very much unaware, we discovered that Thomas Sandercock, athletic senior at the University of Pen Argyl, is a suffering patient. He explains to us that he had been outrageously spanked by his chemistry teacher, Lorraine Eilenberger, when he innocently deposited a wad of chewing gum on his text book to prove the theory of molecular adhesion. While recuperating Tommy has been doing a great deal of reading on current events. Picking up a well-known newspaper and reading at random, we discovered that Jane Wil- liams was giving an afternoon tea to announce her debut into society. Turning a page or so we encounter an advertisement that announces the opening of Sonda Cali's new riding academy. A special feature of the course on riding will be lectures by the well-known author and sportsman, Weston Parsons. At this time head nurse Marie Cesare informs us that visiting hours are over and she hurriedly accompanies us to the door. With a warning from Pen Argyl's Big Ben we immediately make our re- turn journey to P. A. H. S. Trodding slowly into the gym we are greatly con- fused to find that we are no longer a part of the fantastic world of 1956, but mere seniors at our final social event of the year. In thinking over the events which have been related to you with every measure of precision and accuracy, we are somewhat happy, just a least bit astonished, and most of all purely amused. Our home Held being fixed we played several games at l'Veona Park. P. A. H. S. 9 - CATASAUQUA 0 The game with Catty was played on our home field for the first time in sev- eral years. A hard fighting Catty team bowed to a much superior Green and White team. Pen Argyl's scores came as a result of a touchdown in the second period and a safety in the third period. STROUDSBURG 7 - P. A. H. S. 0 In the second period of the game Stroudsburg recovered a Pen Argyl fumble and advanced down the field making the only score of the game. The score was made by a pass from Lessig to Freymuller. P. A. H. I9 - E. STROUDSBURG 0 A fast stepping Pen Argyl team defeated E. Stroudsburg High on Pen Argyl's home field 19-0. Touchdowns were scored in the first, third and fourth periods of the game. P. A. H. S. 27 - NAZARETH 0 A hard hitting Pen Argyl team roared into Nazareth defeating them by a score of 27-0, and then roared out again. Pen Argyl scored in every period. Nazareth threatened only in the fourth quarter when they advanced to the 8 yard line. WILSON 12 - P. A. H. S. 7 Scoring two touchdowns in the last eight minutes of the game, Wilson de- feated the Green and White warriors 12-7, which spoiled Pen Argyl's chances for the League Championship. NORTHAMPTON 32 - P. A. H. S. 0 Due 'to sickness, Pen Argyl traveled to Northampton with a small and weak squad. Northampton was a rough, hard hitting team, which didn't have much trouble over-powering Pen Argyl's small and light squad. BANGOR 20 - P. A. H. S. 0 Pen Argyl High School's football team bowed to the Maroon and White. before a capacity crowd of approximately 6,000 people at the extremely wet and muddy Bangor Stadium. The first half was a see-saw battle with the first downs equal. Bangor picked up a first down in each of the first two periods, while Pen Argyl got two in the second period. The first half ended with Pen Argyl threatening on Bangor's nineteen yard line. The second half opened with Pen Argyl kicking off to Bangor. Throughout the third quarter it was nip tnd tuck until the last few minutes when Bangor scored. The fourth quarter showed Bangor holding the upper hand, scoring two touchdowns. Thus ended the 1945 football season. PAGE 59 Q 4 u.11 60 'VHANKSCIVING DAY SCENES l'l1ly1'11g' ilu' fflllllf, P. A. H. S.
