THE CLASS OF FORTY-FIVE TWENTY-Foun 4-44? The flower which represents our class In all our fixture Zllld all our past, Is the white carnation, pure and fair, Wfhose fragrant odor fills the air. The white stands for the purity Wltieli all our members seem to seeg The green stands for our High School lVith all its happiness and tears. The odor which is rare and sweet, An odor that you'll surely meet, Is precious and secure to our mind, For in it one classmate we'll find. The hrst carnation of our class Alone we left into the past. To dwell in lands of lovely flowers Beneath the ivory twining bowers. She wore a smile on her face, She possessed loveliness in her grace. And so her name lives on with us, That we cannot forget her thus. So when the flowers we shall place Upon our gowns with elegant grace, And look into its radiant bloom, lVe'll think of all its fore-going doom. Each of us some day will meet l'Vilh this carnation on a street, lVhere life will never, never end, And goodness we will all defend. So as a flower may pass away As darkness comes at close of day, Once again the sun shall rise To break the darkness of the skies. In this flower we'll always see glean, just as she appeared to me, The one carnation sweet and rare That vanished 'mid the gloomy air. Alone amid the hills of grass, The lonely flower blooms at last, And throws its gleam along life's way, To guide us safely day by day. Years pass, but still the flower lives, For many happy thoughts ol love it git To those who loved but lost its bloom, Beneath the shelter of a room. yC2llAS 'es, si I TWENTY-sux Senior Class History On a sunny morning in September, 1942, we returned to school and were very proud, for we were Sophomores. We eagerly looked forward to participating in all the activities that begin with the Sophomore year. Our class was organized under the direction ol Miss Hester A. Heller and we elected the following oflicers lor the year: President .......... ..... ........ A I .FoNso Guloo Vin'-President .... ...... D ALE Cfxssten Sf'C'7'I4l!lTy ........ ...... B ARBARA SMITH Trmszrrm' ..........................,.............. ....... Pi-ivtus NIURPHY Our social event of that year was the Sophomore Hop held in the high school gymnasium on May 14, 1943. We also ordered our rings. The design was selected by the class of 1943, and has been accepted as the permanent design for school rings. One year of our high school had elapsed and we were now Juniors. X'Ve had lost two of our classmates, who joined the armed services. YVe immediately settled down to the task of organizing our class, since we had many activities to plan for this year. Under the leadership of our class 4-4464 1 l advisers, Miss Esther B. Dennis and Miss Flora M. Lobb, we elected the follow- ing officers: President ........... ....... G ERRY CRAWFORD Vice-President .... ..... R OBERT HUGHES Secretary ......... ............ J OE ROGERS Treasurer .........................................,.......i.............. NTAYNARD BEAL We then selected our class motto, the class flower, and the class colors. The next thing on our program was the selection of our class hats, pennants, neckties, and emblems. - Since we had to begin raising money for our Senior year, we conducted a very successful magazine campaign. Prizes were given to those who partic' ipated. In order to increase our funds, the class sponsored two dances, one which was held in the high school gymnasium, and the other being held at the Bank Hall. The music was furnished by LeRoy Metz's Orchestra. VVe were deeply grieved to learn of the passing of one of our classmates, Jeanne Albert. A beautiful spray of flowers was sent by the class in respect to her memory. Several members of our class also took part in the annual junior Prize- Speaking contest, with several prizes of money being awarded. The two activities of the year that we all eagerly looked forward to were our Prom held in the high school gymnasium on April 28, 1944, and our Banquet held at Pocono Manor on May 26, 1944. At last we became the dignified Seniors of the school. XVe had added work and responsibilities this year. We elected our class ofiicers under the supervision of our Senior Class advisers, Miss Allen More and Mrs. Edna Imhof. They were as follows: President ........... ...... S HERwoon CASE Vice-President ...... ............ D ALE CASSLER Secretary .................. ...... 'I 'HERESA ALBANESE Assistant Secretary ...... ....,..... L oU1sE CONFER Treasurer ..............,. .. .,...... JAMES PALMER Assistant Treasurer .................................,. ................ A IEAN RAINES We conducted a second magazine campaign and sponsored the Thanks- giving dance, which was also a Victory Dance. It was so named due to our football team's winning the annual Thanksgiving Day Football game with Bangor High School, our rival school. Our two main activities for this year were our Prom, held in the high school gymnasium on April 13, and the Banquet held at Pocono Manor on May 4. These activities all passed into the background as we looked forward to Class Day, Baccalaureate, and Commencement. W'e conclude our high school history, with a prayer that Victory will come very soon and that we may have a just and lasting peace. XV ith this hope, our high school days at P. A. H. S. come to a close. SHIRLEY MlLI.liR 9535?-P TweNIY sevt N . 1' A . False faces can be bought at the 5 8: 10. 2. Never do your own homework, some sucker will have it done so that you can copy it. When you go to Chapel always be late. This is one way of being noticed. 4. Whenever there is an exam, remember: Cooperation is the keynote to success. 5. As SENIORS you should set a good example for the lower classmen by breaking as many rules as you can without being caught. 6. Play around with the chemicals in chemistry class, by some stroke of luck you might blow up the school. fPleasant little thought, isn't it?j 7. Always wear your Sunday go to meetin' clothesg namely, overalls, plaid shirt, and quarry shoes. 8. Wlien walking through the halls sing as loud as you can, there might be a talent scout around. 9. If there is special music being played in Chapel, do not let it interfere with your conversation. 10. Wfhen chewing a new kind of gum deposit a piece of it on Old Abe so somebody else can try it. ll. Stack other students' lockers, they can get their books out a lot quicker that way. 12. If you suffer from Spivak Fever or Hamptonitis, don't forget to visit those great doctors at the State for treatment. They are under the super- vision of your classmate Frank Figilettif' Conclusion: If you follow these instructions, we can assure you of an un- successful but lively future. THE SENIOR CLASS Tn-nnrv-1wo 4-GK Farewell So dear were our higl1 school days, Filled with never ending joys, Starting to learn life's highways, That lie before each girl and boy. So many moments of gladness we shared, When all the World was darkg Each classmates troubles we all bared And did it without a bark. Every perfect day must come to an end And joys must turn to sorrowg For as we leave our dear school friends, VVho knows the road of tomorrow? Each one of us will go his way, To finish the work he plansg But all must work day after day, With ever faithful hands. We humbly thank the teachers kind, Who helped us in our studies: And never better friends we'll find Than those of our high school buddies. Our school we pay high respect, And really wish to stay, So in our memory its affects, Will never fade away. When day is done and shadows fall, And all the world is brightg We hope to see our classmates all, just as they appear tonight. Farewell to all that we hold dear, Each memory, joy and sorrow, So may we in the coming year, Our little friendships borrow. We close our eyes in a little prayer, For each one in the class: just a little line in which to say, May you never forget the past. 9559-7 Tnmrv-maze Class Prophecy A group of truants were happily boarding' the NVaer and Tear Bus looking forward to spending an enjoyable afternoon at the State Theater in Easton which was presenting the world famed Frank Figiletti and his pigeon warblers. Passing through the rocky, mountainous region preceding Easton, our skilled bus driver was suddenly distracted by a beautiful brunette, obviously not his wife. Suddenly the bus swerved into the mountainside knocking its occupants from their seats. As the mist slowly cleared before our eyes we were astonished to Find our- selves in the year 1955. Among the noise and din of the stupendous city of Pen Argyl, Filled with skyscrapers, we noticed a building that outshone all the others in its splendor and height. As we entered we found it to be owned and operated by our old schoolmate, Donald Colver. The featured orchestra for the evening was that of the talented LeRoy Metz. Upon looking closer we found the drummer to be our old friend LeRoy Fulin. The vocalist was the lovely lady with a bird-like voice, Alberta Bonney. The band blared forth loudly and the spotlight was turned upon two jitterbugs who swung into action. They proved to be none other than Villa Mlieand and 'lohn Christman. As we were leaving we collided with the well known comedian, Miss Shirley Ann Tinney, and her escort, James Baskwill. Crossing the street we noticed a new and modern building which replaced the former Fire Hall. Upon entering the penitentiary we were greeted by the head matron, Julia Reimert, who was at that time severely punishing one of the inmates who had tried to escape with the aid of a hairpin. Outside again we noticed that the Liberty Grill, which had been the second home of most of the Senior Class members, had been remodeled and was under the management of Miss Madelyn Farleigh who was very strict with her patrons. Passing on we stopped at a news stand owned by john Catino and bought a newspaper and upon unfolding it and glancing at the first page we found a picture of Hollywood's latest star, Joyce Jackson, and her playboy escort, Sherwood Case. Hailing a cab, driven by George Edwards, we were taken to the Pen Argyl High School and in the principal's office we were astonished to see Enes Bon- tempo, who was trying to punish a new student for talking indisereetly to the Lincoln Statue. Walking down the hall we spied Miss Theresa Albanese who had just received the position of P. O. D. teacher because of her wonderful work during her senior year at school. X'Ve noticed the new janitor, joe Rogers, removing the chewing gum wads from the floor. After returning down town our attention was centered upon a slightly weather beaten building which turned out to be Kathryn Hill's Beauty Salon. As we glanced into the window we saw her giving Miss Viola Zanette, the owner of a number of chain stores, a mud pack. Shirley Miller, her assistant, was giving Jean Powell a henna rinse. Hearing the loud beat of drums and excited voices we turned around quickly and saw a circus parade approaching. In the lead was the clown, THIR'IY Foun 4444 Louise Confer, following her were Alethia Strunk and Ethel Smith, the star acrobats. VVe also saw Dale Cassler, the circus midget. The main feature of the circus was the snake charmer, Phyllis Murphy, who had just returned from the Orient. The tight rope walker was Phyllis Klutz. After an hour's ride to the suburb, Delabole, we took note of the fact that Vivian johnson had established a large chicken farm. Her farm hand was the lmrd working Clark Pritchard. Further on down the road was the boarding house run by .lean Parsons. Included among her paying boarders were Maynard Beal, a prosperous banker, james Palmer, editor of Figiletti's magazine, and Norma Grube, the country school teacher. A few houses down the way we came upon the residence of Gerry Craw- ford, country doctor. His assisting nurse was Jean Raines and his capable housekeeper, Lorraine Mann. At that time a car whizzed by and we discovered that Alfonso Guido had run over a chicken from a neighboring farm and was being chased by the County Sheriff, James Male. Completing our tour of Delabole we approached the Delabole Interna- tional Air Line Service. Boarding the helicopter we were greeted by the Incen- diary Blonde, Barbara Smith, who was serving as hostess. After a half hour's ride, our handsome pilot, Donald Reduzzi, informed us that we were now approaching Wind Gap. Upon our arrival we were astounded by the appearance of a large building bearing the sign Virginia Bowers' Nursery for Infants. Across the street in a spacious home, the local socialite, Miss Helen Paske- wicz, was engaged in entertaining her guests with a Come as You Are party. Among her guests were Robert Lane, the noted psychologist, dressed in a satin lounging robe. Helene Cawein appeared in tennis shorts and racket. Serving the anchovies and beverages was Kathryn Houck. Upon leaving we encoun- tered a black limousine which pulled up to the curb and Kenneth Smale crawled out followed by his valet. Proceeding up the street we came upon a barber shop which was under the management of Lester Smith, a former Malone brother. His little, but pert manicurist proved to be Lucy Ceraul. Crossing the main intersection we noticed a large building which happened to be the local bijou. Upon further investigation we found it to feature Sig- mund Catino's Vanities of 1955. Feeling something cold and wet upon our faces we descended from the mist and after our thoughts were once again composed we continued on our journey to Easton. Y Football Resume Under the leadership of our new coach, Broni Krisukas, we started on our ISH4 football season with a fairly well experienced team. Our home field, being fixed during the spring, two of our games were played at YVeona Park. CATASAUQUA 32 - P. A. H. S. 6 As tradition for the last few years, we traveled to Caty for- our first game. Putting on a drive in the first period, Caty marched from mid-field to pay dirt and scored in each of the following periods climaxing in the last period with thirteen points. Pen Argyl had its only chance during the first period after which they had to resort to passes. STROUDSBURG 7 - P. A. H. S. 0 In a nip and tuck battle with the Monroe County boys, Pen Argyl was edged in the final period with a 7 to 0 score. The touchdown coming in the last few minutes to play when Snyder threw his touchdown pass. NAZARETH 13 - P. A. H. S. 0 A smooth running, excellent blocking Nazareth High football team came to Pen Argyl on a rainy muddy day to take the measure of the Green and WVhite by a 13 to 0 score. Scoring their two touchdowns in the first two periods, enabled them to keep the lead until the Final whistle was blown. P. A. H. S. 6 -- VVILSON 0 Wlinning our first game of the season, we went to Vfilson this day to defeat a hard charging Blue and Gold of Wlilson High. The lone score of the game coming in the third period. Pen Argyl took the lead to hold it to a breath- taking, exciting finish. The winning of the game furnished a great surprise to the town folks and gave the team a better outlook for the rest of the season. NORTHAMPTON 14 - P. A. H. 0 Coming up against a rough, hard hitting Orange and Black, Pen Argyl again came out on the tail end of the score. Being heavily outweighed, Pen Argyl held marvelously to an exceedingly low score. Northampton scoring in both the second and fourth periods. 4-Q44 COPLAY 20 - P. A. H. S. 6 Intercepted passes ruined Pen Argyl High's chances against Coplay. Despite the fact, the Green and Yvhite garnered 10 first downs to Coplay's 5. Wfe came home on a short end of a 20 to 6 score. P. A. H. S. 18 -- EAST STROUDSBURG 7 A fast stepping Pen Argyl team defeated East Stroudsburg High on the East Stroudsburg State Teachers' field 18 to 7. This game gave an opportunity for the second string team to gain experi- ence for the annual Turkey Day Classic. P. A. H. S. 6 - BANGOR 0 Bangor High School's football team bowed, 6-0, to the inspired team ol Pen Argyl High School. before a capacity crowd of approximately 5,000 people at the Bangor Stadium. The opening kickoff saw Bangor receiving the ball on their own 35. After running down-field for three consecutive first downs, Bangor resorted to the air. Here Case intercepted Falcone's pass and raced to Bangor's 14 yard line. On the first play of the second quarter, Case cut off tackle for a first down on Bangor's one yard line. On the next play Tinney faked a line buck and shot a bullet pass to Guido over the line into the end zone for six points and Victory. The try for the extra point was stopped at the line of scrimmage. Once again during the second period Pen Argyl was within striking dis- tance. Taking the ball on Bangor's 37 yard line, Tinney headed off tackle and cut back over center to carry it to the Bangor 7 yard line. Here Pen Argyl lost the ball on downs. The second half was an up and down affair with neither team getting very far. Pen Argyl had the edge, however, with Sandercock's punts keeping Bangor in their own territory all afternoon. Thus ended the 1944 football season. 95555-7 FIFTY Five Basketball Present wartime conditions have been the cause of the elimination of many basketball games that would have been played if permissible. The team, under the direction of S. Nicholas Fister, although not in the league, played six independent games during the season, competing with the Alumni, Bangor and Portland.
