My, we were proud! We were start- ing Senior High School at last. Of course, we were lost for a week or more, but we finally found ourselves. Then the Sophomore Class organized with Miss Ellen Bonney as our class adviser. The following officers were elected: President, Jay Young: Vice President, Robert Lewis: Secretary, Harriet Godshalkg Treasurer, Conrad Martin. During the year we enjoyed several social affairs at school and a roller skating party at -the Bangor rink. The climax was a very enjoyable spring dance held in the cafeteria of the school. After a very pleasant vacation, 88 of us returned to good old P. A. H. S. We were sorry to find some of our former classmates missing. Well, we were now Juniors. My, we were getting up in the world! The class was organized with Miss Thelma Brunner as our class adviser and the following members as officers: President, Jack Williamson, Vice Presi- dent, Edward Lobby Secretary, Dorothy Allen, Treasurer, Arthur Roberts. The first important thing accomplished this year was the choosing of our class colors fpurple and goldj , pennants, hats, emblems, flower, and motto. One outstanding event was the annual Prize Speaking Contest, also sev- eral parties and dances, which, of course, were topped by the first formal prom in the gymnasium, to be sponsored by any class of the school. The big affair of the year-our Junior banquet, held at Monomonock Inn, Mountain Home, brought the activities of our Junior class to a close. Then, before anyone realized it, came September, 1940, with 83 boys and girls beginning their Senior year. Of these, 81 remained to finish the year under the leadership of President, Robert Lewis, Vice President, Dante DeBer- ardinisg Secretary, Mildred Youngg Assistant Secretary, Marian Doneyg Treas- urer, Jay Young: Assistant Treasurer, Martha Phillipsg Adviser, Mrs, Edna Imhof. The year's activities started with the annual magazine campaign, which proved very successful. The first of our social gatherings was a Thanksgiving Victory Dance. Following this came the Snow Man Dance, a roller skating party at Saylorsburg, the Senior Prom, and most important of all, our Senior banquet. With all these happy memories behind us, we are now looking forward to the climax of our whole high school career-Class Day, Baccalaureate Service, and Commencement. v Thus, the scene closes on the high school days of the class of '41, and with it all the joy and happiness we shared together. After an absence of nearly ten years 1 was amazed with the many changes and improvements, but my attention was almost immediately attracted to the large neon sign inviting my inspection of the new SPACE-O-GRAPH-an inven- tion by Lewis Miller, an old classmate. This apparatus would promptly show a picture revealing the present activity and location -of anyone, simply by inserting a coin and speaking the person's name into the mouthpiece. This marvel, as you have undoubtedly suspected, was located in the pros- perous recreation establishment owned and operated by Allen Biechy and Bill Powell. A picture of our 1941 graduating class gave me a startling idea. 1 quickly pulled the picture off the wall, supplied myself with nickels, milled my way through the large crowd, and started furiously inserting money into the machine, calling off names of my classmates as I turned the handle. Joe Semolenyak was the first name mentioned, and it was a real satifaction to see him located in the Hertz-og Building, operating a first-class photography shop, ably assisted by Gordon Smale and Josephine DeNardo, who were endeav- oring to take an attractive picture of Arlene Barber, the new model. Next I noticed Joe Bosco busily engaged in preparing the evening edition of the Pen Argyl Index, with Robert Depp already seated in the truck ready for delivery. In a quiet, remote room 1 could see Donald Johnson preparing the latest drawings for the Comic Section. By again turning the handle of the machine I was transferred to the interior of a large modern hospital, under the capable management of Dr. Arthur Roberts. Chief of Staff. A quick glance revealed his secretary to be Lois Parsons. It was gratifying to see so many familiar faces, such as Betty Jackson, Velma Bowers, Madge Farleigh, Ella Fuge, Laura Eedon, Pauline Hendershot, Marilyn LaBar. and Joyce Lynn, acting in the capacity of qualified nurses. The chief dietitian of this modern hospital was Marie Lesh, and Harriet Ciodshalk was the labora- tory technician. My heart nearly dropped when I noticed that Wayne Avery was a patient, but I quickly learned it was nothing serious, He had simply taken another fall from one of his stands at Weona Park. 1 was particularly amused with the next scene because it acquainted me with two old chums in a hot argument. There was Lester Schlegel with a uni- form and a sheriff's badge attempting to arrest Johnny Miller. Schlegel alleged that the fish just taken from the Delabole Dam were entirely too small. The next scene shifted to a popular summer resort where everyone was having a good time. There I saw Bettie Ace, Bud Davis, Esther Werner, and Floyd Liero dancing to the delightful, but corny music of Connie Martin and his Alley Cats. Featured in the band was Dante DeBerardinis with his imper- sonation of Ziggie Elman, and none other than those songbirds Jane Darrohn, Catherine Sandt, and Elaine Toth. On the tennis court, in rare form, was Instructor Olga Patuski giving lessons to Emily Ealey and Gladys Hontz, a task which appeared hopeless. Real excitement happened in the next scene when State Cop William Omlor brought Alfonso Abruzzese before Mayor Robert Lewis on a charge of over- loading his trucks which he used in hauling shipments from the Albanese Silk Co. Lawyer Jay Young was quickly notified to represent the defendant. I never took Glynn Davies seriously in school, and my eyes nearly popped out when I saw his super garage in full action, attended by the uniformed mechanics, Leonard Ruggiero and Angelo Reduzzi, under the careful manage- ment of Albert Malone, At the gas tank, in the largest automobile I ever saw, sat wealthy Alvin Wilson, who had just perfected his 6-minute drying cement. I was anxious to learn how things were progressing at the high school, and the next picture that confronted me was of unusual interest. There was William Jones, Principal, Martha Phillips, Secretary, Irene Kellow, Teacher of 12th grade: Harold Metz, Instructor in Craftsmanshipg Margaret Allen, Home Econ- omics Teacher, Marian Doney, Music Teacher, and William May, Physical Instructor. I am satis-fied that the football team will never lose a game under the personal direction of C-oach Enrico Segatti and his assistant, Paul Kopko-both graduates of Notre Dame, and All-Americans for two years. Next I inquired about the business girls of my class, and the machine hur- riedly took me to the business center of the town. There I saw Carmel Malone's Beauty Emporium where she was actively engaged in teaching Pauline Stock, Joyce Schlegel, Leatha Gold, and Gladys Weidman 'the fine points of hair dressing. Their victim in the chair was Nevis Visentin, whom they were attempt- ing to change to a blonde. Then I saw the Dancing School of Isabel Hackman, Constance Curcio's Dress Shoppe, Miriam Gi1bert's Stationery Store, Dorothy Lobb's Delicatessen, Iva Sadler's Quick Lunch, Edith Vosper's Roller Skating Rink, Winifred Parsons's Department Store, Helen Bellis's Toy Shop, and the Public Secretary's Establishment operated by Amelia Cesare, Helen Sandercock, and Mildred Young. At this point I was summoned to the telephone to learn that Joyce Beers, the new operator, had called fto tell me that I must return at once to my place of employment. Probably it was just as well that I had to leave because I was running low on nickels, and I had only a little more than enough to pay my return train fare. And with proud, young eyes he views it: His work, his life, his theme. He knows not of the life that ensues it: He now enters the epoch supreme. Like him on the threshold of life we stand, May our dreams be not denied, And our prayers be forever at our command- As a great eternal guide. For into the world we must venture at last, No longer together as one: With only memories of what is past, And the things that we have done. Our fates will be different and far apart, And the visions of friendship may dim, But le't's try to keep in our innermost heart- A single thought, soft as a hymn. And remember again-just once in a while When alone in the twilight glow, To speak a kind word and send a sweet smile To the ones we used to know. And let us trust in God on high To carry the message along, On wings of night through the starry sky In the music of a heavenly song. For what is greater here on earth, Than to live in the thoughts of a friend Who though far away may prove his worth Of a friendship that will never end. And what is greater in heaven or earth, Than to place your trust in God To carry you back to the friends of your birth, Though on foreign lands you trod. Always remember the years that have gone, Expressed by the sunbeam of truth On the amateur painting the artist has drawn: The unadorned beauty of youth. -EDITH VOSPER 4 MEMOIRS 1 9 4 1 ' lNwWAMANNN , .,,,., ,,,,,,vY NAAALVSAAL AMAMALWANMNVBAAAN MMMANNNNMMNWWWNWQLALJNWALJMNWLALNWANAAMVMVMV CLASS WILL We, the class of 1941, being of unsound minds and healthy bodies, do hereby solemnly will and bequeath, on this l9th day of June, in the year of our Lord l94l, the following possessions to the Junior Class. Its meetings are held every two Weeks in the high school building. In addition to its religious activities, selling milk to the lunch-room students is one of the club's regular business transactions. Some of the monthly activities of the 1940-41 season were: Distribution of Christmas baskets, a joint Tri-Hi-Y and Hi-Y semi-formal dance, a treasure hunt, a hay ride and barn party, a swimming party, and initiation and induction ceremonies. 0 Tnmnr-NINE MOIRS . 1941 'NNSAN ,,,,,, . ,YYYY YYYN66MNWWWN ,,,,,,, , ,,,,,' l Fonrv HI-Y President ., ,.,..,..... Through its program of clean sports, clean speech, clean habits, and clean scholarship, the club endeavors to make boys more socially minded. The Club year began with a mass induction and initiation service, and continued with the regular Weekly meetings of the club in which programs, designed for improvement of the club, were presented by club members and professional men. Outstanding club' members are sent to summer training camps, regional conferences, and induction meetings of nearby clubs in preparation for leadership. Both teams put up a bitter struggle until the final period, when Parker crossed for the Slate Belters' only tally. Washington could not penetrate the defense of Pen Argyl, While the home team advanced several times into the opponents' territory. Knecht and Segatti were the sparkplugs of the Pen Argyl attack. With a fast backfield, and a stubborn defense, the Pen Argylites proved to be the better team. With this first victory Coach Poust looked forward to a successful season, PEN ARGYL O - CATASAUQUA 3 The Green and White invaded Catasauqua with the hope of winning their second game. The light, speedy team of Pen Argyl met their match against the larger boys of Lehigh County. Catasauqua, the heavier team, threatened the lighter Pen Argyl eleven goal line several times, but the Slate Boys were able to ward off a six-pointer by Hghting gamely throughout the contest. The only score of the game came in the second period, when Spess of Catasauqua kicked a 30 yard field goal. For the remainder of the game both teams pounded at each others defenses without success. PEN ARGYL 6 - STROUDSBURG 0 The warriors of Pen Argyl met the undefeated eleven of Monroe County for the initial night game of the season. With successive drives into the opponent's territory, the Pen Argyl boys finally put across the winning touchdown in the second period. Avery, Segatti, and Knecht carried the burden of the attack, while DeBerardinis, Young, and Davis held up the defensive end. Stroudsburg resorted to aerial warfare in the final period, but were unable to overcome the Pen Argyl defense. The latter showed its driving power by gaining 99 yards more than the opponents. This proved that the Slate Belters were a team to be feared in the future. NAZARETH 20 - PEN ARGYL 0 Before a crowd of 3,500 spectators, an undefeated Nazareth squad invaded the Slate Belt to gain its fifth straight victory. With no score at the end of the first period, the Nazareth attack started to take effect. Resorting to an aerial attack, which did not succeed, the Blue and White started another drive culminating in another score. Although the Pen Argyl lads put up a valiant fight, they were unable to overcome the deciding lead which was stacked up against them. 0 Form-seven MOIRS YNALJV Frrrv 0 , ,,,, , , , Captain CHEERLEADERS Seniors Lois Parsons Martha Phillips Juniors Marjorie Raines Sophomores Gloria Bieler Amelia Chychota Nevis Visentin 'l94'I ' ' ' '- ' i -Aj N ,7 mW15wa H - Q I, 1 .nook 1 f ' ,, .
