Emmy Lou Trask Shirley Worcester . . . Frank Soares . Mr. Roy Burgess . . Stevens Studios The period in which we live and of our grad- uation from high school offers a privilege for service to any person who is well prepared. May we think of the years spent at Pemetic as the initial period in this preparation for the opportunities that lie before us. Through our continued sacrifices and with a determined effort to achieve perfection in our selected vocations, we may help our communities to find a solution to many of its perplexing problems. Now the time has come for us to part. As we leave these portals of Pemetic, we take with us cherished memories that have endeared us to our high school. As we move on to blaze new trails, may we stop and remember those memories once again and the activities and organizations that helped us to establish them. This year book we of ferto the 1964 graduating class of Pemetic. Many years from now we may want to relive those days spent at dear old Pemetic. 2 Table of Contents John F. Kennedy JHetmirial On a usually restless Friday afternoon, we all sat in our classes. It was the last period of the day. In the senior English class a quiet groan went up as we heard the loudspeaker come on. The groan ceased immediately at the words of Mr. Furtwengler, our principal: I have just received a news bulletin that President Kennedy ... has been assassinated. There is no word yet as to whether or not he is dead. I will let you know as soon as anything comes through. After an awful, shocked gasp, silence filled the room for a few seconds; then came the first few stricken words. Oh my God, no! What? It can't be! Why? Who would do something like that? Then came speculations from some as to what might happen, who would have done this thing, the state of the country as a whole. Others of us just sat in dumbfounded silence. The speaker rasped again as we heard reports from the office radio. At one point the announcer said, If there is any time when we should all pray for our President, the time is now. As I closed my eyes, I didn't actually see the others lower their heads; but I knew they did. Oh, God, please don't let him die. That was all I could think of, repeated only once, plain and simple. A blast of static jerked my head up and the whole room tensed as we heard these four simple words, The President is dead. No one said anything now. Heads lowered and tears welled up in the eyes of a whole nation. The bell rang, marking the end of a period and the end of an era; we filed back to our home rooms and solemnly headed home. Welostagreat man—a man of determination, courage, statesmanship. A man of the people of America; a man who loved youth and was actually one of us, the youth. The students of Pemetic would like to acknowledge this great man. In return for the respect he gave us, we give to him love, admiration and respect. In return for his high example and great leadership, we, who hold the country in our hands, give to him a promise of protecting it and making it prosper and grow to be an even better land than it is. We promise to take the responsibility that we, as citizens, have to our country and use it well. The memory of John F. Kennedy will last many long years as we try to follow his example and ideals best expressed by his own words: Let the word go forth from this time and place, to friend and foe alike, that the torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans—born in this century, tempered by war, disciplined by a hard and bitter peace, proud of our ancient heritage--and unwilling to witness or permit the slow undoing of those human rights to which this nation has always been committed, and to which we are committed today at home and around the world. s MR. AND MRS. ROBINSON DEDICATION We, the senior class of 1964, acknowledge with grateful appreciation the patience and guidance given in the field of music to our class and to the entire school by Anna and Alton Robinson. It is with great pride that we dedicate this, our yearbook, to them. YEARBOOK STAFF EDITOR: Emmy Lou Trask ASSISTANT EDITOR: BUSINESS MANAGER: Shirley Worcester Frank Soares 10 SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS SENIOR CLASS HISTORY In the fall of I960, we, the class of 1964, entered Pemetic High School as freshmen. Our officers elected for the first time were: President, Sam Beal; Vice President, Emmy Trask; Secretary, Carol Reed; Treasurer, Donna Hancock; Student Council representatives, Anita Harper and Joan Davis. Our advisors were Mr. Keith and Mrs. Small. The second thing that happened to us was the immediate initiation by the merciless sophomores. The girls were made to dress as Chinese men, wearing pajamas, baskets on their heads, and carrying bowls with chop sticks. The boys dressed as Chinese ladies with plenty of make-up, kimonos, pillows, and carrying umbrellas. During the year we held the Freshman Frolic, and also sold book covers to members of the other classes. That year, we sent Emmy Trask to the All-State chorus in the spring as the only freshman in the group from Pemetic. We were represented in J.V. basketball by Dave Harding, Alan Spurling, Craig Mclntire, Ralph Hodg- don, and Arthur Robinson. Dinah Tapley was our only cheerleading representative; she was on the J.V. squad. Our Sophomore year began with our joyful initiation of the new freshmen, and we got off to a very good start. We held class elections, choosing the following officers: President, Emmy Trask; Vice President, Sam Beal; Secretary, Carol Reed; Treasurer, Celeste Har- kins; Student Council representatives, Alice Robinson and Jimmy Sprague. We held the Sophomore Hop during the year, sold potato chips at noon and at home games, issued the Pow Wow, and sold more of our ample supply of book covers. Celeste Harkins and Emmy Trask were our J.V. cheerleaders, and Dinah Tapley represented us on the Varsity squad. Dave Harding and Alan Spurling again made the J.V. basketball team. That year we sent Emmy Trask, Mary Riddle, and Carol Reed to the All-State chorus. The final triumph of the year was the selection of our class rings. In the fall of 1962, we returned again--this time as juniors. Class officers were immedi- ately elected and were: President, Emmy Trask; Vice President, Alice Robinson; Secretary, Carol Reed; Treasurer, Dinah Tapley; Student Council representatives, Celeste Harkins and Sam Beal. We at once set about our preparations for the Junior Prom, which was held in November. We worked on decorations for weeks—the theme being Paradise of the Deep. That year, Dave Harding and Alan Spurling again represented us in basketball—this time on the Varsity team. Dinah Tapley and Cessie Harkins were our Varsity cheerleaders, and Emmy Trask and Sally Lewis represented us in J.V. cheerleading. Again we sent Emmy Trask and Carol Reed to the All-State chorus. Ellen Martel played in the All-State band. In addition to this, we sold pop at all the home games, helped with the Yearbook, and as the year came to a close, looked forward to becoming seniors. Now we are the senior class, having entered last fall for the final time, with only 27 of our original46 members. This year, we elected as officers: President, Frank Soares; Vice President, Emmy Trask; Secretary, Carol Reed; Treasurer, Ellen Martel; Student Council representatives, Celeste Harkins and Merle Cousins. Our first big event was the senior play, The Death and Life of Larry Benson by Reginald Rose. Everyone enjoyed presenting it and the result of some very confusing rehearsals was a highly successful performance. During the year, we have sold candy, selected our invitations, name cards and graduation pictures, which we have exchanged. Our representative in Varsity basketball this year was Alan Spurling. Celeste Harkins and Emmy Trask, the new captain of the squad, both made up our Varsity cheerleading contingent. Sally Lewis represented us on the J.V. squad. Try- ing out for the All-State chorus are Emmy Trask, Carol Reed, and Sam Beal; for the All- State band, Ellen Martel. In the spring we will hold the Senior Prom, which we hope will be a big success. We look back at our four short years now as history, and we will leave here with fondest memories. Now we must set our sights for the future, relying on the experience and guidance gained at good old Pemetic. FREDERICK E. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY About the year 1920, a committee was formed for the purpose of recognizing outstanding ability and achievement in the secondary schools of this country, and the National Honor Society was founded. This society of high schools is an outgrowth of many such honor societies in colleges. The Society does not consider Scholarship alone. The constitution of this national organiza- tion recognized four principal objectives and ideals as fundamental in all education practice; Scholarship, Character, Leadership, and Service. The purpose is to hold these objectives above everything else as goals toward which we should all strive. In keeping these objectives before our school, we hope to induce others to seek good scholarly habits, to take part in worthy ser- vice, and to lead forward in all things that advance the welfare of the school—always building up their own characters in carrying out these motives. Membership in this Society is con- sidered one of the highest honors that our school can confer. The emblem of this organization is the keystone and flaming torch. At the base of the key- stone appear the letters C, S, L, S, which represent the four chief principles of the Society— Character, Scholarship, Leadership, and Service. The colors of the Society are blue and gold. Blue is the symbol of truth, and gold is the light by which truth radiates through the world. The flaming torch is the emblem of the purposes of the organization—to bear forward the searching light of truth, to lead that others may follow in the light, to keep burning in our school a high ambition for the enduring value of life, and to serve in consideration of others. 34 STUDENT COUNCIL The purpose of the Student Council is to develop attitudes of good citizenship; improve student-teacher relationships; assist in the management of the school; provide orderly direction of school activities; and promote the general welfare of the school. Its principal contribution, the development of good citizenship, is one of the objectives of all schools. Since good citizenship involves not only knowing and understanding, but also action, the Student Council must act to maintain its prestige. All powers of the Stu- dent Council are delegated to it by the school administration; thus, the principal has the full power of veto. The Council represents the highest student organization in the school, for it represents the entire student body.
