Soon after school started, we were formally welcomed by the Sophomores with an initiation. The girls wore men's pants and shirts, sneakers with nylons, and a cap on backwards, while the boys wore bermudas, blouses on backwards, a bonnet, and two different kinds of shoes. After we got this under our belts, we settled down to high school life. Our class advisor was Mrs. Dauchy. We elected the following officers: Elmer Beal, President; Janet Wass, Vice-President; Sandra Berry, Secretary; and George Trask, Treasurer. Our Student Council representatives were Janet Wass and Lee Wilbur. Our Sophomore year started out with fun. We initiated the in- coming freshmen which was fun for all. Under the direction of Mr. Crafts we elected Elmer Beal, President; Janet Wass, Vice- President; Sandra Berry, Secretary; and Judy Rich, Treasurer. The Student Council representatives were Maureen Bryant and James Harkins. We also sold popcorn, potato chips, and pro- grams for the basketball games at the first of the year to supple- ment our class treasury. This year we published the school paper, The Pow Wow . Our Junior year was a busy one indeed. The biggest event was our Junior Prom. Music was supplied by The Coasters . Although the prom was a lot of work, it was enjoyed by all. This year it was our turn to put out the Pemetic , which was a hard and strenuous job. Our class officers were as follows: Elmer Beal, President; Janet Wass, Vice-President; Ruth Ann Grindle, Secretary; and Judy Rich, Treasurer. The Student Council rep- resentatives were James Harkins and James Sawyer. In the fall of 1960, we returned to Pemetic for our last year. We elected Elmer Beal as our President; George Trask, Vice- President; Judy Rich, Treasurer; and Ruth Ann Grindle, Sec- retary Our Student Council representatives were Patty White and James Sawyer. We began by selling candy for our class treasury. We presented the senior play, Great Caesar's Ghost , under the direction of Mr. Quint, our class advisor. It was a three-act comedy and was enjoyed by all. Now, as graduation is drawing near, we are making plans for next year. The four years we have spent at Pemetic as a class have been full of activities and events that will remain as memories forever. Composed main- ly of Juniors and Seniors this year, the varsity lost five players during the season: Buddy Trask, Tom Goodwin, Walter Rich, Jim Sawyer and Dick Waugh. The Pemetic Jayvees under Coach Forbes Keith turned in a successful season of basket- ball. Their record contained nine wins and six losses (to date). This is one of the best re- records for Jayvee teams in the past ten years. The team consisted of thirteen players; five Freshmen (Allan Spurling, Merle Cousins, Art Robinson, David Harding and Ralph Hodgdon), four Sophomores, (Loren Spurling, Rod Quinn, Fritz Mattern and Mark Clark), and four Juniors (Darrel Hubbs, Brian Trask, Eddie Smith and Manley Lane). During the season the varsity borrowed a few of the Jayvees to help strengthen the team. Those of us who watched the Bar Harbor game at Mt. Desert High were impressed with these reserves among whom are Darrell Hubbs, Manley Lane, Fritz Mattern, Allan Spurling and Loren Spurling. We will look forward to an exciting season next year as some of these boys take varsity spots. 34 Rowl, Lto R: R. Stanley, J. Black, D. Hubbs, R. Waugh, L. Spurling, C. Farley, J. Harper, H. Vine, E. Mr. Furtwengler, Principal PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE TO THE PEMETIC YEARBOOK STAFF: Hard work and patience on your part have done much in producing your yearbook. The task is finished; the rush to meet deadlines and last minute changes are over and done. The experience you encountered as members of the staff will carryover with you in the outside world. May I congratulate you on the final outcome of your efforts. 38 A MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR We extend to you, the Class of 1961, an invitation to keep this yearbook as a memoir of your unforgettable years at Pemetic High School. On behalf of the staff, I wish to bestow upon you our deepest wishes for happiness and success in the future. The friends you have made here and the knowledge you have acquired here will never fade from your lives if you hold them close to your hearts. We hope the classes of 1963 and 1964 will have as much satisfaction and pleasure in their work on the yearbook as we have had. The patient guidance and companionship of our faculty advisors, Mr. Chick and Mr. Johnson, will be one of our most cherished memories in the years to come.
