The sky itself had an ominous hueg With ne'er a single patch of blue. Though the horses stamped within their stalls, The barnyard was barren of songbird calls. The small beasts hid neath bushes low As they awaited the coming of the snow. In the stillness twixt night and morn, There in the darkness a storm was born. Gently it came, like a songbird flew , Then in intensity it grew and grew. The next day awoke to a whole new world, Over which snowflakes rose and swirled. The sun at once began its chore, To melt it ere there came some more. It consists of students who have volunteered to give their time and effort for one study hall daily so that there will always be someone in the library to serve the students. Before this year the library had little organizationg therefore the present librar- ians have had to do much extra work in discarding, preparing the books for use, cataloging, and taking inventory. The Librarians hope the organ- ization will. flourish in the coming year for they feel that it is essential for a good school like Pemetic to have a good library and a good library owes most of its existence to the Librarians. The second setback came in the return game with Ellsworth 34-39 at home, A skein of five wins was at the expense of George Stevens Academy, 64-35, Sumner 60-42, John Bapst 45-43, Bucksport 68-48, and Milo 64-53. The Indians lost their first County League game to Bar Harbor 42-64. A win from George Stevens Academy and two losses, Mount Desert 59-60 and Sumner 44-47, wound up the season. A 7-3 record placed us second in the County and the season's overall record was ll wins and 5 losses. The season's record seeded us number one in the State Regional Tourney held at Ellsworth. Facing George Stevens for the third time during the year, the Indians again won out 62-52. In the finals we faced the Bar Harbor Seasiders in one of the finest games of the season. We lost a close one 42-45. We are pleased that they won the State Class M. Title. The playing of every member of the squad was commendable and the Captains R. Brown, J. Carroll and G. Hall, along with K. Clark and W. Furtwengler, Jr., will leave Coach Haden with vacancies hard to fill. Prospects of W. Mitchell, G. Boyington, J. Ramsdell, J. Bouchard, Jim Carroll and R. So there are these three spirits, God, life, and love, and they are so interrelated that they form one spirit, God. First of all God gives life. He gives life to all the plants and animals and then he sets human be- ings, us, from among his many creations and gives us dominion over the earth. Then God gives to us, his children, the meaning of life through his religion or religions. I say religions because all men are created by one God, the God of love, but men seek God by various reli- gions such as through the Christian, Jewish, and Mohammedan religion: Each man in his own way, whether he be right or wrong in his beliefs, is seeking the creator, the supreme being, who, I believe, represents love. Religion teaches us a way of life and love which should compromise between our natural biolog- ical state and the state of perfection which we someday hope to attain. Since religion is the means through which God teaches us his doctrine, love, religion should be practiced with love and should al- ways embody the spirit of love. The spirit of love is like an overwhelmingly big heart, eternally beating, which is had by the joy of giving and receiving love. This great heart is divided into various kinds of love. The need for love is the greatest need of every human being. The first kind of love a person experiences is the love of a child for its mother, father, and his immediate family. This is the ear- liest love in life and it springs from the child's need of care, security, and the feeling of being want- ed. As the child grows in mind and body he widens his horizons to include friends outside his family. The love ties of friends are mainly those of mutual interests. Often, when friends cease to become in- terested in the same things they move apart and although they may retain some affection for each oth- er it is not a growing love. As the boy or girl approaches adulthood he or she becomes attracted to the opposite sex. The mating of men and women, symbolized by marriage, is the fulfillment of love on earth., It is the greatest love in life. lt is a life in which two people retain their individuality while living together in one spirit. This love satisfies the needs of the mind and the heart and those of the body. It is directed away from ourselves toward the welfare, comfort and happiness of someone else, and yet it is a healthy love because each partner received love not in return for, but in spite of giving love. The fruit of adult love is the bringing forth of another human being into the world. Reproduc- tion is the biological purpose of life but love is the spirit behind it. Reproduction brings forth the ma- ternal and paternal love of men and women. It contains the wonder of having created something and the love for something weaker than oneself. Also, the child is something to keep from harm and guide along the great path of live. Thus the heart continues beating forever. The live-love cycle goes around and around, never ending, but the spirit of love is a way of life and this spirit must be constantly guarded and protected. Man must be taught the way of life and this spirit must be constantly guarded and protected. Man is the creation of God, made in His image and being only a base copy of perfection can only strive to- ward God, Through God, Who is love. OUR HARBOR I am going to tell about our harbor, So peaceful, steady, and calm. The tide comes in: the tide goes out, Like the days of ordinary time. The water is clear and crystal light, The fish are swimming about. The boats are on their moorings, And seagulls flying in and out. I love our harbor, so big and wide, lts depths so deep and strong. Its banks of sand and colored rocks, And buoys all floating along. Its large gray factory all trimmed with white, Settled beside the Manset shore. The fish swim in and out at night, With hardly a sound or noise. let's not forget the coastguard base, With its large red buoys and floats. The ships come in from out of space, To tow away a demolished boat. The crashboat too is stationed here, To help to guard our nation. Also to keep down the panic and fear, In case of an enemy invasion. Meredith Rich '57 In summer it is full of visiting boats, From other states and lands. To investigate what they have read in books, Written by a man from Maine. To visit the harbors and see the sights, So they can tell their fathers. How lucky the people of a certain town are, To live in Southwest Harbor. ' Richard Brown '55 WOMAN What is this thing called woman, For whom all men pledge their lives? And how could she be worth it, Worth all of this sacrifice? Who can explain--bear with me-- The things with which she's endowed? For her great battles are waged, For her the fields are plowed. Why all this trouble for she, Who oft if so sullen and glib, When, all of the facts remembered, Is naught but the first Man's rib?
