Chancellor Paul R. Givens Pembroke Sfote University welcomed its new chancellor, Dr. Poul R. Gi- vens, when he began his chancellorship July 1, 1979. In on interview with the Pine Needle in September, Chancellor Givens re- vealed his ' key to success ' for PSU in the next decade. We need to work on achieving academic excellence and morketing PSU in such on extent that people from this total area feel on identification with the university said Givens I feel that this is a place where people can come and grow as individuals, a place where they can develop their skills and elevate their tastes, Givens further expressed Dr. Givens received his B.A. ond M.A. degrees from George Peobody Col- lege, ond his Ph. D. in Psychology from Vonderbilt University. Dr. Givens has held numerous full-time positions. Prior to coming to PSU, he served as vice-president for Academic Affairs at Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois. He has co-authored a textbook in human behavior os well as other publica- tion in fields of higher education, creativity, and values. Dr. Givens is a native of Wellsburg, W. Va. He is married to the former Lee Jonssen of Glidden, Iowa. They are the parents of four children. two chancellor
Faculty-Staff Citations Dr. David K. Eliades is a native and resides in Lumberton, North Carolina with his wife Ceiene and daughter Darby. As a double major in History and Journalism, Dr. Eliades attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he re- ceived his B.A. degree. His M.A. degree was earned at East Carolina University and he is currently working on his Docto- rate degree from the University of South Carolina. Dr. Eliades co-authored THE ONLY LAND I KNOW, THE HISTORY OF THE LUMBEE INDIANS, published in 1 979. Dr. Eliades enjoys hiking, backpacking and sports. A lifelong resident of North Carolina, Mrs. Wyona Duffer moved to Pembroke from Fayetteville. Mrs. Duffer is the Dormi- tory Supervisor for Belk Hall. She is the mother of four children, three sons and a daughter. Mrs. Duffer enjoys sewing and is a fan of basketball and football, as well as other sports. I love Pembroke State very much, but the only thing I regret is watching the students graduate, said Mrs. Duffer. She in- tends to stay at Pembroke State for many years to come.
