It has been said that the measure of a man ' s life is his donation, his gift of himself for the betterment of others. The INDIANHEAD, for the second time, is dedicated to Chancellor English E. Jones, who has given much of himself for others. On June 30, 1979, Dr. Jones officially steps down as Chancellor after a significant career during which he has piloted this institution from a time when it struggled for existence to its present place as a part of the University of North Carolina system. It is appropriate that the 1979 commencement exercises include the first conferring of the Master ' s Degree by Pembroke State University. This graduate pro- gram is an achievement that Chancellor Jones la- bored long and hard to attain. When the $2.3 million Health and Physical Edu- cation Center at Pembroke State University was named in Dr. Jones ' honor in 1973, President Wil- liam Friday of the University of North Carolina sys- tem said of Dr. Jones: Sir, I salute you. And may this magnificent building now bearing your name be an imposing tribute to your great efforts in the service of this institution. This is but one of numerous honors that have come to him. He is a trustee of the Baptist Chil- dren ' s Homes of the North Carolina Baptist State Convention, which he served as first vice- president. He is a trustee of the North Carolina Cancer Institute, the Baptist Hospital in Winston- Salem, and Southeastern General Hospital in Lum- berton. He is a member of the National Association of School Administrators, the National Education Association, the North Carolina Education Associa- tion, and the North Carolina .Association of Col- leges and Universities. He has served on the White House Conference on Children and Youth, ap- pointed by the President of the United States, and the North Carolina Good Neighbor Council, ap- pointed by the Governor. He has been listed in Who ' s Who in American Colleges and Univer- sities. In 1976 he was honored as the North Carolina Jaycees ' Boss of the Year.
