JONES It has been said that the measure of a man ' s life is his donation, his gift of himself for the betterment of others. The INDIANHEAD, for the second time, is dedicated to Chancellor English E. Jones, who has given much of himself for others. On June 30, 1979, Dr. Jones officially steps down as Chancellor after a significant career during which he has piloted this institution from a time when it struggled for existence to its present place as a part of the University of North Carolina system. It is appropriate that the 1979 commencement exercises include the first conferring of the Master ' s Degree by Pembroke State University. This graduate pro- gram is an achievement that Chancellor Jones la- bored long and hard to attain. When the $2.3 million Health and Physical Edu- cation Center at Pembroke State University was named in Dr. Jones ' honor in 1973, President Wil- liam Friday of the University of North Carolina sys- tem said of Dr. Jones: Sir, I salute you. And may this magnificent building now bearing your name be an imposing tribute to your great efforts in the service of this institution. This is but one of numerous honors that have come to him. He is a trustee of the Baptist Chil- dren ' s Homes of the North Carolina Baptist State Convention, which he served as first vice- president. He is a trustee of the North Carolina Cancer Institute, the Baptist Hospital in Winston- Salem, and Southeastern General Hospital in Lum- berton. He is a member of the National Association of School Administrators, the National Education Association, the North Carolina Education Associa- tion, and the North Carolina .Association of Col- leges and Universities. He has served on the White House Conference on Children and Youth, ap- pointed by the President of the United States, and the North Carolina Good Neighbor Council, ap- pointed by the Governor. He has been listed in Who ' s Who in American Colleges and Univer- sities. In 1976 he was honored as the North Carolina Jaycees ' Boss of the Year. Particularly close to his heart has been his role in the Harper ' s Ferry Baptist Church where he has taught Sunday School for twenty-five years and has served as chairman of the deacons, as well as in the Burnt Swamp Baptist Association, where he has served as moderator. Dr. English Jones is a self-made man. He worked his way through the Indian Normal School high school program, establishing his innate leadership abilities from the outset. Dr. Jones went on to serve in World War II, three of his four years being spent in Europe as an Air Force first sergeant. After the war, he attended Western Kentucky University and was graduated from the University of Kentucky. He later received a Master ' s Degree from North Carolina State Univer- sity. In 1965 he was awarded an honorary doctorate by Wake Forest University. In 1956 he joined the faculty of the then Pembroke State College as a professor of agricultural science and biology. Advancing rapidly, he became presi- dent of the institution in 1962 and convinced Gov- ernor Terry Sanford and the state legislature of the wisdom of a bold expansion program for the col- lege. In 1969 Pembroke State College became Pem- broke State University. In 1972 it became a part of the University of North Carolina 16-campus sys- tem, and Dr. Jones was named chancellor. In 1978 a full-fledged graduate program was approved for the university. The record of growth statistics between 1962, when Dr. Jones became president, and 1978, when he announced his impending retirement, is as fol- lows: enrollment, 758 to 2,334; number of faculty, 35 to 134; campus value, $1,448,293 to $16,666,000; number of buildings, 9 to 25; number of graduates each year, 98 to 410; number of staff positions, 22 to 159; financial aid, $30,000 to $977,000; percentage of faculty members holding doctorates, 22 percent to 61 percent. Such dedication indicates that Dr. Jones exemplifies the motto found on the seal of the Uni- versity: Knowledge, wisdom, devotion, service. ENGLISH b.
