. . 1974-75, a year that was hard, long and not the Jeast bit boring. A year of variance from the ordeal of Richard Nixon to the escapades of Congressman Wilbur Mills . . . Ateksandr Solzhen.itsyn, exiled in Switzerland, was made an honorary American citizen, the second man in history behind Lafayette .. . Patricia Hearst, kidnapped in Feb., is now on the FBI ' s most wanted list . . . kidnapped by the symbionese Liberation Army, daughter of newspaper giant Randolph Hearst, she became Tania of the SLA. In North Carolina, an Eastern Airline DC-9 crashed into the woods while attempting to land in Charlotte on Sept 11, killing 69 people Wilbur Mills, one of the most respected men on Capitol Hill, lost much support after admitting to fits of drinking and being seen with the stripper Fanny Foxxe . . . they had their last tango in the Capitol. . In hopes of putting their small country on the map, Zaire had Mohammed Ali and George Foreman bid for the heavyweight title of the world in their country . . . Mohammed TKOed Foreman in the eighth round . . . Evel Knievel took us all for a ride with his fantastic sky cycle over Snake River Canyon when a parachute deployed too early and he landed, safely, at the bottom . . . The recording industry had a field day with Superstars Elton John, John Denver, and the soloing Beatles. Even Bob Dylan returned with his protest songs after an absence of seven years ... Mainly on the political scene ... In July, Retired U.S. Chief Justice Earl Warren died at 83 . Ehrlichman and three others were convicted for the EMsburg break-in, while the House Judiciary Committee opened its impeachment debate . . . former Treasury Secretary John Connally was indicted on bribing and perjury charges. In August, former White House counsel John Dean was sentenced to one to four years in: prison for his Watergate cover-up role. In a televised speech, President Richard Nixon announced he would resign the following day citing the erosion of his political base in Congress and also admitting that some of his judgements were wrong . . . President Gerald Ford, successor to Nixon, nominated Nelson Rockefeller as his vice- president . . . In September, the United States and East Germany established diplomatic relations while President Ford granted Nixon a full, free and absolute pardon for all federal crimes he committed or may have committed in office . . . President Ford also offered conditional amnesty to draft evaders and deserters who registered for up to two years ' work in public service; Ford also defended CIA activities in Chile prior to the 1973 coup- . . A federal judge dismissed charges against Indian rebel leaders in the Wounded Knee trial, citing misconduct and errors of strategy The so-called last known American prisoner-of-war in Indochina was freed by the Pathet Lao; In Honduras hurricane Fifi caused heavy flooding killing 8,000 people. In the states, Senator Edward Kennedy (D. Mass.) ruled out a presidential bid in 1976 . . . In October, the Watergate trial opened for five defendants while the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed below 600 for the first time in 12 years . . . In November, the charges against the eight Kent State defendents were dismissed and the White House finally admitted the U.S. was entering a recession. Famine threatened many parts of the world as the World Food Conference concluded with an agreement to establish a new UN agency, the World Food Council. The Justice Department filed a massive antitrust suit against AT T . . . and finally, meeting in Vladivostok, Ford and Brezhnev tentatively agreed on a ceiling for offensive nuclear weapons through 1985.
