On Our Own ft There is another way to escape dorm life, besides commuting; and that is to set up housing off-campus. Many Pembroke State University students (mostly males) prefer staying off campus, for many reasons. We visited with such a commune . David Corn, David Doorman, Doug Smith, Joe Grady, Rex Everhart, and Ronald Parsons live together in a house across town. On living off campus, David Corn says this: I love it! I gotta rent a room and I ought to be able to do as I please and not have any stupid restrictions on me, so I moved off campus. The house allows a little bit of variation besides four brick walls. We have a house fund that pays for the common expenses and if we want to buy something for the house it comes out of the house fund. We pay the same rent as dorm students, but we also have a kitchen, living room, and a recreation room. Isn ' t it crowded with six people? No, two to a room is not bad because we ' re not confined to our one room. Another thing is that the same bunch of guys have lived together for three years we kinda have our own little family. What about study hours? We respect eachother ' s studying and don ' t try to interfere. Joe Grady, David Doorman, and Rex Everhart, together voice a negative side to it though. They said that living off campus tended to separate you from the majority of students. They all agree that every student should live in the dorm at least once. But the general opinion of them all was: I love it!

Got them Ol ' Commuter Blues Ughhh, is probably the first word uttered by a PSU commuter as he turns off his alarm clock which is set at six. He is up and gone by six-thirty ready to face the fog, rain, trucks, and the many other obstacles which may stand in his way. Commuting as viewed by students has its trials and tribulations. Approximately sixty-five percent are commuters. Many of them live within driving distance and so due to a variety of reasons they find it sensible or mandatory to commute. Debbie, as a commuting sophomore, expressed her view on the subject: Having lived on campus, I feel that commuting has more advantages than disad- vantages. Debbie feels that commuting is financially economical and she finds more available time to fulfill her necessary studies. Debbie enjoys the freedom that comes with commuting such as more dedication given to her family and hobbies. Robbie on the other hand, finds commuting boring and tiresome. He feels that the limitations set on him by his parents hinder him from the nocturnal activities that are of PSU. Robbie also misses the friends accompanying him in these activi- ties. But with aJI the apparent drawbacks, commuters still remain the majority of PSU students. 22 The School
