Although reaction to the play was varied, hundreds had to be turned away due to seating space. There were also panel discussions during the week on Politics and the American Indian, Literature and the American Indian, Media and the American Indian, and Education and the American Indian. The School 15 UK The School 17 Indianhead Citations Mrs. Lewis has been a dedicated member of P.S.U. faculty for the past twelve years. She played a key role in developing and maintaining the College Opportunity Summer Program. Mrs. Lewis has been awarded the Distinguished Teachers Award of the Modern Language Association. Her ability to work with and relate to student problems provides a valuable asset to the school. 18 Citations Mrs. Lois Lewis Dr. Nadeau has been more than a faculty member at P.S.U., he is admired by the student body as well as his colleagues. Dr. Nadeau has been instrumental in providing athletic programs for student involvement. He is actively involved with local Junior and Senior High School athletic programs. For his outstanding work in this area, Dr. Nadeau was cited by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association. He has also been selected as an Outstanding Educator of America — Dr. Andre Nadeau Citations 19 On Our Own ft There is another way to escape dorm life, besides commuting; and that is to set up housing off-campus. Many Pembroke State University students (mostly males) prefer staying off campus, for many reasons. We visited with such a commune . David Corn, David Doorman, Doug Smith, Joe Grady, Rex Everhart, and Ronald Parsons live together in a house across town. On living off campus, David Corn says this: I love it! I gotta rent a room and I ought to be able to do as I please and not have any stupid restrictions on me, so I moved off campus. The house allows a little bit of variation besides four brick walls. We have a house fund that pays for the common expenses and if we want to buy something for the house it comes out of the house fund. We pay the same rent as dorm students, but we also have a kitchen, living room, and a recreation room. Isn ' t it crowded with six people? No, two to a room is not bad because we ' re not confined to our one room. Another thing is that the same bunch of guys have lived together for three years we kinda have our own little family. What about study hours? We respect eachother ' s studying and don ' t try to interfere. Joe Grady, David Doorman, and Rex Everhart, together voice a negative side to it though. They said that living off campus tended to separate you from the majority of students. They all agree that every student should live in the dorm at least once. But the general opinion of them all was: I love it! Got them Ol ' Commuter Blues Ughhh, is probably the first word uttered by a PSU commuter as he turns off his alarm clock which is set at six. He is up and gone by six-thirty ready to face the fog, rain, trucks, and the many other obstacles which may stand in his way. Commuting as viewed by students has its trials and tribulations. Approximately sixty-five percent are commuters. Many of them live within driving distance and so due to a variety of reasons they find it sensible or mandatory to commute. Debbie, as a commuting sophomore, expressed her view on the subject: Having lived on campus, I feel that commuting has more advantages than disad- vantages. Debbie feels that commuting is financially economical and she finds more available time to fulfill her necessary studies. Debbie enjoys the freedom that comes with commuting such as more dedication given to her family and hobbies. Robbie on the other hand, finds commuting boring and tiresome. He feels that the limitations set on him by his parents hinder him from the nocturnal activities that are of PSU. Robbie also misses the friends accompanying him in these activi- ties. But with aJI the apparent drawbacks, commuters still remain the majority of PSU students. 22 The School The School 23 Dorm Life 24 The School 1 The School 25 26 The School H The School 27 Lynn Clark, Jobie Wilkie, Darlene Core, Linda Locklear, Cynthia Brown, Dehaeva Drake, Gail Locklear, Debbie Godwin, An- niece Lynch, Teresa Oxendine Miss PSU Teresa Oxendine 28 The School JF A r n € 1 i i r 1 B ' ff c X ), 1 1 i i! 1 1 1 B On a cool November evening, nine excited students competed in a very special event. Only a few weeks before hand, they had been asked to be contestants by students in different campus organizations. After hours of competition, in the areas of Sportswear, Talent, and Evening Gown, the judges compared notes, and came to a decision. Miss Lynne Clark, sponsored by Pi Kappa Phi, was chosen Miss Congeniality, by the other con- testants. Third Runner-Up was Miss Deheava Drake, sponsored by the Black Student Organiza- tion. Second Runner-Up was Miss Linda Gail Locklear, sponsored by the Pi Kappa Alpha Little Sisters. First Runner-Up was Glenda Gail Locklear, sponsored by Kappa Delta. The crowd ' s tension mounted, as the Master of Ceremonies, Mike Ver- million prepared to announce Miss Pembroke State Universty 1975. The girl chosen to represent Pembroke State University in 1975 was Miss Teresa Oxendine, sponsored by the Student Gov- ernment Association. The School 29 w }0 The School Pembroke Players The Players finished their 74 season with a production of The Me Nobody Knows . The touching musical portrayed the lives of twelve ghetto-dwelling children. Their dreams, aspirations, joys and sorrows warmed the audience, already enjoying the many songs and dance numbers. The realization that the spoken dialogue was actually written by children of New York, and the rapport established between the cast and audience led to a heart-felt standing ovation. Much credit was given to director Don Dalton, whose staging of a musical with a large cast and much action came across well on the small Moore Hall stage. George Bernard Shaw ' s Pygmalion came to life as the second show of the season. Al Dunavan directed the classic, portraying the transformation of an ignorant girl into an acceptable London socialite. The School 31 Pembroke Players An innovative outdoor production opened the season for the Player s. Lawrence and Lee ' s The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail , with its earthy teachings of Henry Thoreau, was staged under the stars for two performances at Pembroke State University. The players then took the show on the road for five performances at area high schools. 32 The School 17 S67 ' The School 33 Doc Watson North Carolina Dance Theatre 34 The School Dick Gregory Preservation Hall Jazz Band The School 35 Rod McKuen 36 The School Preservation Hall Jazz Band The School 37 Greek Week 74 -«t n AU l fc HJ £ 5r ■38 The School t _ The School 39 Homecoming Queen 1975 Miss Carolyn Spaulding 40 The School I ' EMBROKE STATE | vn HOMECOMING n mm j lx The School 41 42 The School The School 43 Who ' s Who In American Colleges and Universiti es Christine Sides 46 Honoraries Sandra Hunt Mike Edwards William Juanita Sullivan Who ' s Who V Marie Waites m Linda Fay Johnson •■ ■' ■• ; W John Dawson Gilbert Vereen Honoraries 47 Danny Wilson Debbie Rich Who ' s Who Randy Stephenson Diane English 48 Honoraries Steve Barbee Who ' s Who Pamela Bullard Pam Simmons Lome Hargis Debbie Wiseman Harold Jacobs Honoraries 49 Who ' s Who Larry Bridgewater 3 k i ri ' J |r ] t ' ■■Ellis Jones ■. jk . Sonya Lee Allen Iris McCartney T+4a ■. a Michael Cafaro Henry Oxendine Kim Kwangsuk Who ' s Who Warren Baker Larry Revels Honoraries 51 James Sandra Culler Cheerleaders _ Sally Myatt, kathy Payne, Lynn Moss, Debbi Rich, Linda Locklear, Pam Huff 54 Sports Sports 55 Soccer first row: Larry Kelly, Mike Kelley, John Student, Bob Fowler, Ed Yeager, Lenny Plummer second row: Clay Sheppard, Mike Coward, Ron Holtsford, Eric Riccioppo, Rob Middleton, Val Trask, |oe Stanish third row: Coach Mike Olson, Mitch Covington, Ricky Ray, Danny Evans, David McDuffie, Doug Eller, Peter Saloupis, Tommy Williams, Randy Sullivan Mgr. In the Championship game, however, the Braves met defeat at the hands of Campbell College. The tournament was highlighted by the heroics of Tom Gardner and his 51 Points during the two-day affair. For his efforts he was selected as the tournament ' s Most Valuable Player. After two consecutive losses away from home, the Braves went on the war path winning 8 consecutive home games. After a disappointing loss to UNC-W, the Braves came back to post victories over Methodist and Atlantic Christian. Then tragedy struck as Pembroke fell to Campbell College for the second time in the season. This loss was particularly disheartening, as it gave the Braves little hope of a District title. With numerous rule changes that have been adopted, women ' s basketball is not far behind in the game once dominated by the men. The Lady Braves, after an initial year of frustration and failure, have come into the spotlight at Pembroke State University. Coach Ann Webb directed her team to an impressive record of seven wins and seven losses. The Lady Braves were led by Karen Culver, scoring an average of 17.0 points per game. Also sharing in the scoring honors was Sally Hall, averaging 10 points per game. The crowds have been treated with a different and new type action as was witnessed in the come from behind victory over arch rival UNC-W.
