Players Freseht Wide Variety Anticipating the completion of a new theatre, the Players continued to draw audiences in Moore Hall. Under the direction of Al Dunavan and Don Dalton the drama department filled the stage with varying moods and plots. The musical comedy Once Upon a Mattress was the last produc- tion of the spring semester of 1973. Director Dunavan, facing the prob- lem of a small stage and large cast, succeeded in making the medieval fairy tale an enjoyable presentation. A standing ovation awaited the curtain on opening night of Of Mice and Men . The John Steinbeck classic was the first production of the season. The timeless story of migrant farm workers offered emotional relief to those wishing to see serious drama. Director Dalton skillfully combined the constructlvistic set and mood lighting to enhance what one critic called one of the most ambitious productions yet of the Players of Pembroke State University, but one in which the dramatic gauntlet was lowered and the challenge met successfully. Right — Sandy Hancock and Gary Smith played the romantic leads of Lady Larkin and Sir Harry in Once Upon a Mat- tress . Below — On stage with Of Mice and Men . - '
