Among the teams defeated were Methodist, N.C. Wesleyan, Southeastern (twice), East Carolina, Guilford, Belmont Abbey, and Fort Bragg. Outstanding players were senior, Skip Fedak, All-South and All-District; freshman, Tom Carr, All-South; and junior Larry Kelly, who made All-South. In addition Larry Kelly was high scorer for Pembroke with 21 goals. The team ' s greatest effort was the upset against the high-ranked Belmont Abbey. The prospects for the coming year look extremely good with many returning lettermen. Basketball Under the leadership of diminuitive Coach Lacey Gane and Assistant Coach Charles Bishop, the Brave ' s basketball team is expected to do very well this sea- son. Five veterans are returning fronn last year ' s squad including the tv o co-captains Barry Hopkins, a 6 ' 1 sharpshooter and Gary Whitman, a 6 ' forward and all- around hustler. Other veterans returning are 6 ' 8 Gary Locklear, guards Charlie Sarelakos and Bob Willeford. Three men are moving up from last year ' s freshman team which posted a 10-1 record, they are 6 ' 7 Howard Falk, 6 ' 3 Mel Kanode and guard Danny Lucas. New recruits being added to the team are 6 ' 7 Terry Shoenfelt, a Junior College transfer from Isotherm; a Junior College transfer from Lees McCrae, David Hunter 6 ' 6 ; and three freshmen, 6 ' 6 Jay Cousins; 6 ' 3 Howard McLeod and Navy All-star Tom St. Clair. Although P.S.U. has the biggest and largest abundance of big men ever out- fitted by a Pembroke team, they will be lacking experience. With only three se- niors on the team, they are looking to the future and the future seems to be bright with a lot of real talent and a new field house within two years. Even before the actual competition had begun the Pembroke wrestlers knew they had more than just another big job ahead. They started the season with a tournament at Chapel Hill, with two wrestlers, Billy Cranfield and Jack Nitto, achieving state-wide honors by placing third in both weight classes. The advent of the coming season brought with it a realization of long hard hours of prac- tice, devoted to developing techniques. Experience would come with the matches. Coach Harold Ellen, head wrestling coach, begins his second season with Francis Michael as assistant coach. Billy Cranfield and Dave Denton have pro- vided the necessary leadership for the team. John Decembrino, another veteran from the year before, was chosen the best all around wrestler last year. 63 Cross Country The 1969 cross-country team, hampered by injury much of the season, finished the regular season with a fine 13—0 record. The brave harriers again proved to be the power of the state ' s small colleges and universities finishing seventh in the state meet. P.S.U., defending last year ' s championship in Dis- trict 29, managed to finish second behind Campbell College in the District meet. Once again Marty Beeson, an amazing runner from Winston-Salem, repeated his vic- tory of 1968 in the District meet. Beeson and Don Sellars, who finished fourth in the meet, were named as members of the NAIA All-District 29 cross-country squad. Robert Knowles, a promising freshman runner, helped pace the Braves through the season. The Braves are looking forward to a more successful season next year. 64 •Jkjit t ' -t Left to Right: Marty Beeson, Jimmy Cox, Don Sellars, Robert Knowles 65 Track The 1969 track team ended its regular season with a perfect record of no defeats in its opening season in the newly formed District 29. In the District meet at St. Andrews, the Braves cinder- men took the show with an overwhelming score, capturing twelve records by the following athletes: Foster— 100 yard dash and 440 yd. hurdles; Rogers— open 440 yd. dash; Little— half mile; Roberts— shot, one mile run; Hillard— high jump, broad jump, triple-jump, and Lilly-pole vault. All the afore-mentioned also won All- District 29 recognition and Hillard was voted District 29 ' s Most Valuable Trackman. Team members Foster, Lilly, and Hillard qualified for the National Competition in Billings, Montana. Coach Ed Crain and his three stars brought national recognition to our Univer- sity with hopes of building a southern track power. In pursuit of a doctorate degree. Coach Crain temporarily turned over his team to the abilities of Coach Charles Bishop. With the dedication of the returning trackmen and the talents of the new recruits, Coach Bishop plans to launch his team to higher and better competition this season. Baseball team com- piled a won-lost record of 32-7. This was the most wins ever posted by a Brave baseball team. This was due mainly to the fact that the players were fortunate enough to have two very fine coaches in Head Coach Ray Pennington and Assistant Coach Harold Ellen. Pem- broke was e liminated in the finals of the Area 7 playoffs by Appalachian State University. The Braves were led by co-captains Ronnie Collins and Ray Brayboy. Collins was named to the N.A.I. A. All-American Second Team for the second straight year. The 1970 Braves should in all re- spects be as strong as the previous one. There are many new players on the team. This could be the year they make it to St. Joseph, Missouri, for the Na- tional Playoffs. The co-captains for 1970 are Ronnie Collins and Vic Bar- berrousse. Harold Ellen has taken over the Head Coaching chores. 70 mx In alphabetical order: Barberousse, Vic; Broome, Keith; Brown, Doug; Callahan, David; Carder, Walter; Chavis, Ronnie; Coble, Johnny; Coffin, Rick; Collins, Ronnie; Councilman, Barry; Davis, David; Distefano, John; Dixon, David; Douglas, Preston; Dunlap, Paul; Geiger, Gene; Gray, Phil; Ham, Tammy; Hicks, Aaron; Johnson, Mike; Knight, Dewey; Lassiter, Danny; Phillips, Al; Sessoms, Larry; Sharpe, Rick; Stanbridge, Mike; Sullivan, Clint; White, Carroll. 72 73 The 1970 tennis team will be minus such stalwarts as Ihor Lukiw, Charles Spiron, Johnny Merritt and Charles Saralakos. How- ever veteran Richard Stang, Captain of the 1970 team, and Bobby Dai! are looking to such newcomers as Andrew Sledge, Ray Spell, Mark Johnson, Alan Whitaker, Larry Bruce, Gary Strickland and Louis Daniel to continue the team ' s winning reputation. Coach Kenneth Doc Johnson feels that PEP-practice, experience, and perserverance will be the key to a successful season. Th e six teams are: The Pledges, Blob ' s Blunders, AIE, The Professionals, Lambda Phi Epsilon, and SPQR. Each team is made up of a four-man squad, with each team having a handicap. The matches are held at Varsity Lanes in Lumberton. The officers for this year are: President, Dennis Brown; Vice President, Richard Cooke; and Secretary-Treasurer, Mike Dubose. 77 Intramurals This year ' s intramurals program is headed by Dr. Andre Nadeau. The boys have flag foot- ball, volley ball, softball, basketball, tennis, and ping pong. The girls have basketball, softball, volleyball, tennis and gymnastics. I 231 In planning this yearbook, we have tried to compose a book that will be liked by both the students and the University. We would like to thank all those who have helped us to put this, the 1970 Indianhead, together. There have been many long hours, frustrating delays, and finally all was co mpleted. We hope you will enjoy our record of Pembroke State University 1970. Sincerely, Barbara Long Tommy Brett Co-editors 232
